VeRu oru Threadilirunthu suruttiyathu ... :-)
Shall we talk about Bharani and Balabharathy ? (and if possible, compare them ...),
Both these composers are defenitely above average and are talented enough to be talked at par with giants.
I see many similarities in their style of composing - especially both of them look like big fans of IR and that reflects in their songs too.
I am an IR fan and have a 'pidivaathamaana' opinion that nobody can beat IR when it comes to melodies, Even these guys don't prove me wrong, But Their Songs like 'Asainthaadum KaatRukku', 'Athikaalaik kaatRee Nillu', 'Udalennaa uyirenna' make me feel proud and envy at the same time ... :-) (Esp., 'Athikaalaik kaatRee nillu', I don't think any other composer other than IR have used SJ's voice to such great extend, Lovely song !!)
Experts can add more opinions ....

Ironically, both started with a out-and-out commercial venture IIRR...BB with Thalaivaasal and Bharani with ???!!
While Thalaivaasal was dominated with gaana type of songs which made both the movie and the soundtrack popular (I remember going to this movie just after a hockey match while in school - in the same sweaty clothes with the hockey bat in tact - ideal dress for that movie I guess), Amaravathy just stunned me with its melody content!
A bit early to comment on Bharani on those notes...Charlie Chaplin was good. But the first one, forgot its name, starring Kunal was amazing.
On that note how's his music in Style?? Any reviews?

Karthik S,
Bharani's first movie was 'PeriyaNNaa' (*ing Vijaykanth and Surya), It had a wonderful song 'Nilavee Nilavee Sarigamapathani Paadu (HariHaran, Lyrics : aRivumathi) and three gaana kind of songs sung by Actor Vijay.
Later he did 'Paarvai ondRee Pothumay' which made him so popular that he has more than 10 moviesin hand (now), Later 'Pessatha kaNNum pesumaey', 'Charlie Chaplin', 'Ladies and Gentleman', 'Sundara Travels' and 'Style' were released. Paesaatha kaNNum Paesumaey and Charlie Chaplin had some good numbers, I am yet to listen to his other albums,

Is it possible to "like" anyone without any reference made to IR?

Improbable and impossible. :)

Now a small dosage on BaalaBhaarathy(BB):
unnai thotta thendRal ingu aennai thottu sendRdhoru saedhi is a good melody FROM thalaivaasal. Also the title song superbly rended by SPB is also very good melody vaasal idhu vaasal thalai vaasal. This reminds me off an incident that happened immediately after the hit of thalaivaasal. In Madurai there was a felicitation function for BB after thalaivaasal hit. That time a local troup was playing songs contemporary songs and old, middle songs, to fill the time gap. He arrived and the people started asking them to play vaasal idhu vaasal thalaivaasal. They tried, BB also tried with them coordinating to bring the prelude violins music. But alas, it was not successful. He was humble enough to say that it seems it is difficult to bring that effect here i was lucky once(he meant the actual recording). As a compensation he sang iLaya nila pozhigiradhae.
Now regd., Bharani:
I was touring tanjore-kumbakonam-pudukkottai-madurai area (towns and small towns) 2 months after the release of paarvai ondRae podhumae(POP). I was astonished to note that POP songs were listened too more than Minnalae songs(the sensation of that time). It seems as an album, out there, POP was more hit than Minnalae (but yes! as a top song vassegara was more popular there too).

I remember reading somewhere that IR once mentioned that BB was his one of his favourite up and coming composers. Can anyone confirm this?...

I have always wondered why this guy Balabarathi has not made it big despite his fantastic albums from Thalaivasal, Amaravathy and Golmaal. Recall 'Nee pesum poovaa poovanamaa, enn kaadhal noola noolagamaa' by Hariharan and ?Sujatha. It is sad that his talent is not recognized. Recently watched the stupid so called DVD version of Amaravathy and went into the sweet memories from the wonderful songs.

Reposting:
Bala Barathy had entered thru TV serials like Neela-Maala, etc (very good title music and BGMs) in which Thalaivasal Vijay also got famous.
I have read that IR had a chance to listen to one of Bala Barathy's recordings when he happened to pass by the studio and appreciated his music very much.
There was an interview by Bala Barathy that he is an ardent fan of IR and his Tajmahal thevai illai song was inspired from Anandha Raagam (Panneer Pushpangal).
Reg Bharani, he was a player in IR's troupe in 90s. His interview was there is tamilcinema.com few months back - he said 'I was an 'edupidi' to IR' suggesting IR did not treat him well.

Here are a couple of albums of Bharani available at Raaga.com.
Charlie Chaplin
http://www.raaga.com/channels/tamil/movie/T0000407.html
His latest 'Sinthamal Sitharamal'
http://www.raaga.com/channels/tamil/movie/T0000558.html has a few nice melodies, including one that he himself sings. Good to see more such new composers coming up. We need more such composers!

Found three pages of songs by Bharani that I am yet to listen to, except for 'Sinthaamal Sitharaamal'! http://www.tamilsongs.net/page/build/musicdirector/Bharani/
Once I listen to these, then I have to search for BalaBharathy's songs. Half way there:)
