Popularity of all great Indian film music in Tamilnadu and of TFM all over India: Is that possible?

When we are all talking of popularising IR's music abroad, have we ever thought of our own India? We have excellent film music in Bengal, Kerala, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Punjab yet most of these film songs are not enjoyed in Tamilnadu. I feel a large number of fans in TFM, who are genuine music lovers, have yet to invest time in learning about fascinating melodies from other states, who are really comparable to IR or MSV. A lot of discredit will go to the record companies as they do not make available regional hits in a cross-regional basis. Also, listeners are biased to hearing only music of their language in India or is it a time factor? That we do not have enough time to enjoy locally produced music? Whatever, I think it is a duty to learn and appreciate what great film music has been made in other states of India. Also, in this thread we can share knowledge of how much love has TFM gained in other states.

To place TFM in proper perspective, we should all attempt to be more open minded and exchange knowledge of other great film music across India.

  Raja fan,
  the first name that occurred to my mind when i saw this topic was -Hridayanath Mangeshkar. IMO, he's the most talented person from that family.
  
  His hindi movies like lEkin and numerous marathi songs are too good to be missed. (I too , very recently started listening to his numbers.)

  Thinking like this I was longing to hear the great Indian hit Breathless, I heard it and found the breathless number to be a mere "Vaipadu" or "Slokam" - I felt the song is total hype. I also told about this to RajaG who played this song to me, I jokingly said we can do a similar piece of crap and call it ASTHMA.
  mmm...Some say I am baised...at time it is better to be biased.

  I have been following this much hyped hindi-pop... And i feel they are peppy, but doesnt have a quality that'll sustain for a longer period of time. The digital re-mixes arent very impressive. On the positive side, there has been a boom in the number of singers and the variety. Though a lot of trash is being produced now, hopefully the cut-throat-competition would lead to more quality music in the long run

  I guess Salil Choudary is another great MD whose work stil remains unfamiliar amongst Tamil audiences, even after he composed songs for tamil movies like "Dhoorathu Idi Muzhakam". He was a class apart and if I am not wrong, I suppose even IR worked under Salilda before he made it big!
  About Breathless, I guess its not anything spectacular, but it definitely is a very good effort by Shankar Mahadevan as opposed to all the other "Indi-Pop" junk that keeps appearing everyday! I thought atleast 4-5 songs in the album were good efforts.

  As far as this forum is concerned, the Tamil MDs themselves like MSV, KVM , GR ,CRS, SVV might require some attention, leave alone songs from other states.
  I have not heard too many Malayalam songs except for those composed by Salil and Devarajan. Baburaj has been considered by KJY as one of the best ever in Malayalam.
  
  Telugu had MDs like Saluri, Pendyala, TV Raju, Chalapathy Rao, KVM etc. Raj-Koti were quite mediocre, though Keeravani holds a lot of promise.
  
  Hindi , of course is completely devoid of genuine MDs, though Jatin-Lalit at times come with some numbers that sound fresh. The RDB influence is so much on them that they might never be able to carve a niche for themselves. For titillating Hindi music , the best period is '48 to '74. You had an array of contemporary greats with totally contrasting styles and approach. SDB, Roshan, Madan Mohan, Sajjad Hussain, Naushad Ali, Hemant Kumar,C Ramachandra, Dattaram, Husenlal Bhagathram and ofcourse RD Burman are truly great composers whose works are worth preserving ( and to a lesser extent, those of SJ and OP Nayyar).. Hridayanath Mangeshkar never really made it big in Hindi music, though his is a household name as far as Marathi folk music or Hindustani is concerned. He is a very capable singer himself.
  
  Kannada film music had people like Vijay Bhaskar, Sathyam, Rajan-Nagendra, Aswathama, Ranga Rao, TG Lingappa ,GKV for whom PBS and SPB have sung some wonderful songs.

  Sriram could not have said any more better of the current awareness situation of music in Tamilnad. This forum is neglecting to some extent the contributions of many other stalwart composers. Malayalam films and Kannada films have also given memorable songs that lets music lovers wonder is there no limit to film music. In the west the first and last word in musical films was the Sound of Music, but look at Indian film music. You can name a hundred and one films in each language, Hindi, Marathi, Kannada, Mal and Tamil that have made music look like so many different rivers flowing into various oceans!
  
  Shankar has mentioned that Hridyanth Mangeshkar is someone special to listen to. I will soon look forward to getting some. Telugu film music I have not heard the breadth of it. Malayalam too have had really pure music. What about the other languages. Assamese, Oriya are there great composers there too?

  As far as I know , Raja never worked under salilda .Some of his songs have salilda's stamp, though.
  
  (he was an assistant to GKV -u can see a lot of Raja's influence(!!!!!) in old kannada songs and later to V Kumar )

  I also like M.M.Kareem. He composed music for a telugu-tamil movie starring Nagarjuna and manisha.. the song is "Uyire.. Uyire.." which was "inspired/lifted/adapted" from Eagles! But his recent scores for hindi movie Zakhm are quite impressive. Has he composed scores for any other tamil movies?

  Shankar,
  IR worked under Salil as the lead/rhythm guitarist. This was told by IR/Salil themselves.I personally have not felt IR had too much of Salil's influence.
