Because we are discussing about Ravi Shankar... here is something about an article I had read 2-3 years ago about him. It was written about Ravi Shankar by Hariprasad Chaurasia on behalf of Annapurna Devi (ravi Shankar's former wife). Hariprasad Chaurasia is a disciple of Annapurna Devi. The article tells how RS purportedly tormented Annapurna during the 9-10 years that they lived together...how he would try to create obstacles in her life as an artist/performer. And even how he ill-treated ShubhO - Annapurna's son with RS, even after he and Annapurna had separated. It is said that Annapurna was a far greater artist. Indeed there was a quote by Allauddin Khan (guru of Annapurna, RS and Ustaad Ali Akbar Khan), which goes like this: "Annapurna has achieved 80% of what I have, Ali Akbar Khan has achieved 40% of what I have and RS has achieved 10% of what I have". The article even says how RS tries always to spread rumours that Annapurna suffers from stage-fright, when that is supposed to be more applicable to RS himself on some occasions.
This article was published in the Indian Express. Readers should note that I am not trying to pass anything of the above as a fact. Indeed none of it can take away RS's calibre as an artist himself. Maybe someone can comment on the truth value of the above article by Hariprasad Chaurasia. I have no idea whatsoever about whether all that is true or not . Indeed, I have not heard even a single performance by Annapurna Devi at all.
However Pandit Jasraj hasn't been the only one to have maligned RS - here are Annapurna Devi and HC too. And maybe there are many more.

Do you really mean to say that a movie can make it by just employing the best lobbying firm?
I am asking .. is the scene that bad and ugly in the US?
--------------
I know this question is addressed to someone else, but couldn't resist chiming in. Oscars is almost all about lobbying. For eg. over the past 5-6 years, Miramax has developed a reputation for bending the rules to the breaking point when it comes to promoting their movies. In fact, word is that there is huge backlash building up against "Amelie" thanks to Miramaxs' brazen lobbying. We shall see.

pulikkum thiraachai --
puli = tiger
pulikkum = even for tiger
i interpretted the "li" as Gundu lee of thamizh...forget it, i wanted it to be a " slightly sarcastic joke" which eventually heavily turned on me :-)
Since that had "sarcasm" as well as "joke" (assume it had them so, please) two personalities of this forum are well known for such postings, WhyNot and Trend. Of these two Trend is an old timer to this forum(i guess). And hence the theorem. I guess these two egg pies are more than enough on my face.

kupps u r forgiven for ur sins.
btw, some yaaro (where is he these days?) once accused me of being the maru avatar of trend (he was suggesting we were the same person). i'm glad u were not going in tat direction. It took me several Whois searches, and copying and pasting to convince that guy.

Carmen - your assessment of Miramax is on the dot! Harvey Weinstien is a big player in the Oscar game...Remember how he pushed Shakespeare in Love - and that was just another mediocre movie!
End digression: Back to RS with next post (if there is one!)

No doubt that Ravi Shankar has acquired lots of fame thanks to the generosity of Guru Alauddin Khan Sahib, but the truth is he (Ravi Shankar) is not the best sitarist. There are greater musicians and sitarist who are much younger than RS and he (Ravi Shankar) has been afraid of them all his life. Example of these sitarist are Ustad Vilayat Khan Sahib, his son Ustad Shujaat Khan, Ustad Imart Khan Sahib, Ustad Rais Khan Sahib, Irfan Khan Sahib and many others. Ravi Shankar might be more famous than many good musician, but the question is among whom did he acquire his fame?? The answer would be that he became famous among the beetle and junkies who had no idea of Hindustani music. He is a icon by the drunkards and junkies, but to real musicians he is the one on whom Baba bestowed his favors and taught him some lessons, but he (Ravi Shankar) was so unfaithful that he didnt even understand Baba's favors on him. He tormented his wife (Baba's beloved daughter) who in a sense was his guru as well. He didnt deserve an Angle like Annapurna Devi. As time goes by, people will get to know about the real person of Ravi Shankar. A sex maniac who had defiled the sacred music of Baba Alauddin Khan Sahib's.
