I think I went when I was a tiny tot, no memories now. Last went to KL (Batu Caves) for thaipusam in 99.

That is very recent. You should come to Penang to see how Thaipusam is celebrated here. The whole city is transformed and the best part is that about 50% of the devotees are Chinese!
And quite many carry kaavadis too. :)
And you should see the streets when the ratham passes - actually you can't see the street, as it will be covered with broken coconuts.

Back to the topic - which is a better drum for Thaipusam - thavil or congo drums? :)

Yes, i've heard about the Penang TPs. Much better than in Spore. It's reserved to only one or two lanes of the road and there r so many rules & regulations tat there's no more spontaneity watsoever.
And going back to drums, they are banned on the streets during TP in Spore. And so are any radios or other sound systems. And so are breaking coconuts on the streets. :-)
