I have noticed that IR likes to make references to himself in some of his songs..

At present I can think of
1) avatharam : i remember some references in the "aridharaththa poosikkoLLa Asai" song
2) ANpAvam? : in the song "kadal kasakkudaiyyA" he says 'intha kAla iLainyargaLukku iLaiyaraja endan pAttirukku'
3) agni natchathiram : " raja, rajadhi rajan indha raja" , but i dont know if he meant himself..
4) some rajkran movie : in "pOdA pOdA punnAkku" rajkran shows IR's poster and says something about him..
i'm sure there are many more!

Rajiv,
Don't forget the song 'paattaalae puthi sonnaa' from "Karagaattakkaaran" (title song) and 'loveunna love' from "Meera" ('dhesiya geetham ondru ILayarajavai' or something like that). But, I feel that these words are forced into the lyric by the lyricists themselves and I don't think Raja is one who praises himself in his songs.

i agree with you SM. but i wonder how IR feels when he sings about himself (almost all songs which contain references to him are sung by him too!)

Even in Chinna thambi where he says 'naan padacha pattu ellam yaar kodutha sami than'.
if u listen on lines of 'reference to himself', you will find a lot of songs.great composers usually like that.
Even Kannadasan's song 'oru kopayile en kudi irukkum' was spoken of as a 'reference to himself'

PS,
another interesting thing about madai thirandhu is that ,they show Raja singing the song when pudhu rAgam padaippadhAlE comes :-))

there is another song in the 90s which goes like
'raasa ilayaraasa padicha paatu izhukuthu aala...'
or something like that. was IR the MD? what was the film?

Vijay, That was a honest confession by Deva! We must atleast recognise his honesty in admitting that
"Raasa Ilayaraasa padicha paatai padikkaren kelu..."
Solaiyamma was the name of the movie, i think

Mano sings one in Poonthotam.. in the song 'Ponnummani'.
When Vadivel sings.. 'Adha padichaddhu yarru ?.. Namba Ilaiyaraaja..'.. Mano SLAPS.. and says..
'Thanni Adichittu yaar paerra da sonnae ? ' .. Vadivel replies 'Theriyamma solitaen pa'.. and the song continues..
'Andha Ragadevan paaera sonna .. bigul adikannum da' !

It is not IR referencing himself. It is the writers who try to please him. Yeah, IR must avoid that. And in many places, it is the character in the movie. It shows the enthusiastic composer/singer singing about himself. Is that in many movies Rajini and Kamal praise themself? Take it easy guys. Better discuss achivements or something like that.

I am reminded of another song(not by IR - this time by chandra bse i guess). As a reply to an IR song, he composed a song that goes like this:
"Yellorum rajanna pothu jananga yaaru kooru"
- From: Shankar (@ webgate0.mot.com)
on: Sun Mar 7 04:15:46 EST 1999
vaidy,
Yes, i think that song goes like "rAjAdhi rAjanayum thOkkadippEn " or sthg like that. the film is madhurakkAra thambi.
It was a famous series of self references.
raja came up with "rAja ..rAjAdhi rajan indha raja"
the reply from CB was the above song from M K Thambi.
the reply Raja gave was "enkittE mOdhAdhE, nAn rAjAdhi rAjanadA...." from rAjAdhi rAjA.
Idayam pEsugiradhu said , "let's see what CB's reply for that"
CB was never seen after that (he went on to become the AsthAna MD for AVM).

There is a song a 'Kumbakari Thangaiya',
Yenai oruvan paada sonaan avan sonadhu
pol naan padugiraan

There is one more song in chinna jamin
na yaaru enakedhum theriyalayae
- From: Shankar (@ webgate0.mot.com)
on: Thu Mar 11 07:55:02 EST 1999
"...enna peththu rAsayyAnu pEru vechcha AthA dhAn
ponna petha sandhOshathil pOnALammA kAthA dhAn"
from chinna jameen.
But it's interesting to notice that karthik's name in that movie is rAsayyA and the name that was given to raja when he was born is "gjnAna dEsigan".I don't think that reference was intentional.

Prob. one of the earliest such self-reference was in the song "OrampO OrampO" in which there is a line 'pALayam pannapuram chinna thaayi peththa mahan...'

I have mentioned about 'pAttAlE buththi sonnAr, pAttAlE bakthi sonnAR' in karagAttakkAran. The song is very biographical. I suspect it was written by IR himself.

There is an old song in Manippur mamiyar - written and sung by IR himself with full of self references. A rough translation of last stanza:
`I'm presenting whatever known to me-adding the themmangu ragas to it;
There may be some who oppose my composistions
But they may be tasting them inside'
How true!

The song is Rasikaney Arukil Vaa..., but the movie was never released.
The another self reference is:

...in the archives. Complete your sentence Rajiv. Number of ARR threads in the archives because the so-called IR fanatics have better sense than to flog a dead horse unlike the Objectivists who are {profanity} hell-bent on dragging on and on and on and on and on and on about how BAD IR is.

Ravi:
Do you want me to wait until this thread gets as big as the IR's copied songs thread ? :-)
I've sent you and Rajaraman a mail regd. the Test posts thread, please check it. It just bugs me when people cry and make a big fuss whenever someone criticizes ARR. Is it a crime ??? He is after all a public figure and it is totally appropriate to judge him as a musician. Most of the muck flung at ARR is techno jargon. But almost all of it flung back is "ARR sells more cassettes now".
Rajiv:
I didn't even realize that you had started this thread. The "...on and on and on..." was in reference to the IR's copied songs thread. BTW, why couldn't you make it "MDs' references to themselves". I guess IR would have still topped the list but it would atleast be fair in principle, right ? :-)

Srinath: "Hitchcock spotting" is popular among his fans.. that doesn't mean they are Hitchcock bashing.. This is something similar IMO. :-).

Is it NOT the JALRA KOSTI lyricists who USED to be
around Raaja - who are making the references and
NOT IR ???
IR is a very pious, god fearing, highly spiritual,
helpful, and a quiet man. He is not at all egoistic.
I don't think he likes the lyricists making references
about him in songs. He has always said NO but forced
to accept because he never interfers with other's work/creation.

Aiyya Giri:
Are you out of your mind or what, to say IR
with no ego!?
If IR had been really friendly as MSV or other
Great MDs, he would have been the all time GREAT
in TFM - but his downfall is mainly because ot his ego.
Thank God, ARR came and beat Raaja in his own game.
It is not the JALRA KOSTI as you said, but IR himself
asked them to write about himself.
