Sari, How about the song "Manidhan Enbavan, Dheivamaahalaam" from Sumaithaangi ? These two songs from Sumaithaangi would occupy the top rung in the philosophy ladder of KaviArasu. (To me there was only one KaviArasu, and that was Kannadhaasan !!)
Is there a song that suggests the ways to a man to move up from his transient moribund nature to the holy, ecstatic alter of the Almighty ? That song could be Manidhan Enbavan..........

Other song in this category is 'manidhan ninaippadhundu vazhvu nilaikkum endru'from
Avan thaan manidhan. Some of the verses in this
song are really great like
Thandhai thavaru seidhaan
thaiyyum idam koduthaal
vandhu pirandhu vittom
Mandiha pirappai evvalavu easya sollivittar kavignar. Then he says
manadhu thudikkindradhu
mayakkam varuginradhu
azhudhu laabam enne
avan aatchi nadakkindradhu
While writing this i remembered the foll lines from the
song 'padaithaanae'from Nichayya thamboolam
ithanai siriya manidhan thalaiyil ethanai sumaigalada
iruvadhu thodangi ezhuvadhu varaikkum endrum
mayakkamada

Can anyone forget "Ponaal Pogattum Podaa" from Paalum Pazhamum ?
This song is so philosophical that people would try to avoid listening or playing this song. Kind of " Off panni tholada andha paata(i)" The impact is so heavy that this song is expected to invoke the strains of melancholy or solitude in a man's mind. I would say this is one among the few songs that could keep us in the balance, in this material world.
"Vandhadhu theriyum povadhu enge
Vaasal namakke theriyadhu !!
Vandhavar ellam thangi vittal indha
Mannil namakke idamedhu !!
The most haunting lines in the song being these lines,as, for sure,it makes you think!!
The first two stanzas are totally devoted to birth and death issues, and I think, the poet must have had an intense feeling to express himself in this area. May be, he must have been overcome by the imperceptible concepts of life and death. The third stanza reflects more the situation in the movie.
There are other songs, the notable one being "Amaidhiyaana Nadhiyinile Odam" from Andavan Kattailai, and I wish someone discusses these songs.
Ninaippathellam.........Nenjil Or Aalayam
Ullam Enbathu Aamai..........Parthal Pasi Theerum
Veedu Varai Uravu........Padha Kaanikkai
Aaru Maname Aaru...........Andavan Kattalai

What abt 'satti suttadhada kai vittadhada'??
Especially the lines
Pirakkum munne irukkum ullam indru vandhadhada
irakkum pinne varum amaidhi vandhu vittadhada
See the words that were chosen to describe
the thoughts of that character.
This song, I understand, was written in just 3 minutes time. Should be a record...

There is this great song in sAmA rAgam sung by bAlamuraLi.
Yes it is mounaththil viLaiyAdum manasAtchiyE. The song goes like
mounaththil viLayAdum manasAtchiyE
Ayiram kanavAgi Ayiram ninaiAgi
kAriyam thavaRanal kaNgaLil nIrAgi
mounaththil viLayAdum manasAtchiyE.
(Can anyone post the full song please?)
Another song that I can like very much is
irukkum idaiththai vittu illAdha idam thEdi
yengengO alaiginRAr gnAnathangamE.
On another vein, I listened to the song
mayakkamenna, indha mounammena of vasantha
mALigai. The song a big relief after listening
to the present day junkies. The sophistication
was very good, albeit the lyrics was simple. ex.

Kannadasan sings the song "en koppaiyile oru kudi irruppu". Can anyone get the info on which film is this and in what situation he sings the song?

Part of the duet "Vaazha Ninaithaal Vaazhalaam, Vazhiya Illai Boomiyil" from "Bale Pandiya" is philosophical in its own way even though not to the same depth as the others named in this page.
Also, "Manithan Maari Vittaan" from Paava Mannippu" has some good lines.
"Amaithiyaana Nadhiyinile" is one of my all-time favorites. The combination of the lyrics and the music communicate a sense of peace one tends to associate with sitting under a tree and watch a river flow by quietly.

How about a couple of songs from Sumaithangi -
'manidhan enbavan deivamagalam' and
'mayakkama kalakkama'
- From: Kanchana (@ ww-tj22.proxy.aol.com)
on: Sun Jul 13 13:21:39 EDT 1997
Also, "Kaalamidhu Kaalamidhu Kannurangu Magalae" from Chithi. Even though the song is written for a female, the lines are apt for both the genders as life progresses, and outlines the multi-faceted demands on one's time as one grows older. The only element of stress it misses is career, obviously since it was written for the non-working female in India in the 1960's.

Yet another song which is more of a social commentary than a deep philosophical song from "Karnan":
Kannukku Kulamedhu
Karunaiku inamaedhu
Vinnukku mudivaedhu
Vilakkukku irulaedhu

paramporul kandae uyir prirakkum

You first started this interesting analysis topic saying we will discuss various areas such as Thathuvam, Kadhal, veeram etc. Should we be moving on to the next category? Is the discussion on Thathuvam over, in your opinion?
