Why are'nt singers not composers?

I have always been fascianted by the fact that none of the playback singers have emerged as good composers. SPB gave it a shot and in fact "Mayuri" was a decent try but did'nt proceed from there.

Is it due to mindsets or singers do'nt have the musical width in their thought. They seem to narrow themselves to melody but appreciation of rhythm or other facets of music seems to elude them.
Am sure SPB or KJY or SJ should posses enough muscial knowledge to let their creative energy fly. Why are'nt they attempting or have they attempted?
Or is it only instrumentalist who can make it as composers?

  I won't accept this.
  
  SPB is a great composer too. Did you listen to Thudikkum karangal, Sigaram (especially, "Agaram ippo sigaram" & "vaNNam konda veNNilavE"), to name a few.
  
  SPB can create wonders in composing, if he get a chance.
  
  All the time, he says, he is ready to do film music composing, just show me a producer, who wants it !
  
  None of the producers turned up.
  
  I am pretty sure that SPB is a good composer.

  KJY has composed a lot of carnatic songs. I don't think he has done any film composition.

  And I remember reading somewhere that SJ was the MD for a tamil movie. And of course, we all know about A.M.Raja and his composing abilities(eg. thenilavu)

  I remember SPB once saying that when National Awards were used to be given based on a song in the movie instead of the score for the entire movie, Lakshmikanth-Pyarelal walked away with the best music award as composers of the film while
  it was infact SPB who had scored the award winning classical song. I'm sorry I just remember SPB saying this in one of his many interviews and I can in no way correlate that.

  KJ has composed some really beautiful ayyappan songs thru his recording company tharangini.many volumes came.after soo many years i can still remember the tunes of many songs in it.

  KJY composed songs in Mallu movies, so does SJ in telungu. SJ told this in her programme "Queen in Concert".

  A.M. Raja has composed music for "Kalyana Parisu" almost every song is good. I'm sure he MDed other movies too.
  
  The question is what was their main talent and not whether they can do both. The time it takes to compose for a movie, SPB could sing 40 songs. Perhaps now that their market has dulled, artists like SPB, S.Janagi, and Vani Jeyaram can turn to composing. I wish they would.
