Udhaya :)
Btw, 'Galeer galeer' is sung by the heroine, a handloom weaver, in a completely pensive mood, working on the loom and ruminating on the uncertainity of her future.
'Thenil aadum roja' (by PS incidentally!) is a mother singing to her baby!
'kaalaippaniyil' (by Sujatha) is a married woman singing bashfully in the aftermath of her first night.
I do agree, however, that the trend of heroines singing odes to nature got a grand revival with Nadiya!

How long did the fish survive such a terrific stare from Saroja Devi? With an inch think make up,(incorrigible accent-PS saves!) ,a devilish stare and a structure resembling OLD MONK bottle,SD sings -Nature "ode" poaidum.
JL sings "chittu Kuruvikkenna" ,Madhubala sings "chinna Chinna asai" Nadhiya sings "paneeril nanaitha" - great ones. But Saroja Devi......tamizh cinemavin poaratha kaalam.

OISG,
SD was horrible in MGR movies, but in Sivaji movies she had a different persona. Her best movie was probably "thaamarai nenjam". I'm no big fan, she's certainly not in Savithri or Sujatha's class, but poraadha kaalam seems overstated what with Radha Saluja, JJ, and Manjula around.

OISG,
Compared to the barrelled wonder that was JL,SD was better- only her voice resembled that of a rat caught between the door & wall :-). Here too JL was worse- her voice resembles of a person gargling for relief from sore throat. intha azhagil Amma enral anbu enru pattu verra... Baghavantha, ennu ayithu!

I agree with Udhaya ..SD had done great movies and has given great performance in Thamarai nenjam, Kulavilakku,Paalum Pazhamum and ETC..
& Reg Voice Far better than Getting dubbed with multiple voices in different Movies...
she was the one to do equally roles with MGR,Shivaji,Gemini, SSR & many others.
corect Udhaya,
SD was beautiful in Paarthal Pasi theerum where in the Expression she brings in "yaarukku Mappillai YAaro" is great!!

Song of the Day: adi kezhakkaalE from naattuppura paattu.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/adikizhakkale.rm
- Sung by Devi (?) and Arun Mozhi. Music by Ilayaraja. We've rarely featured IR's songs in the late '90s, so here is one.
- I heard this song when I saw this film in a dungeon-like theater in Thiruvanmiyur when the movie was released. I didn't hear this again till yesterday. If I remember right, this is the title song of the film. I like the way the song starts, with a naayanam prelude. The song then meanders on with a couple of uninspiring charanams.
- Naattuppurap paattu was released in '96. It was directed by Kasturi Raja, now the famous father of Dhanush. It starred Sivakumar and Kushboo. The most famous song in the movie was "oththa rooba thaarEn" which was a rage at that time. I think this period, around '96, saw IR at the lowest point of his career. His films around that time, like Poomani, Poovarasan were all duds and didn't boast of memorable songs. Even in this movie, his songs didn't sound fresh and impressive. He made a comeback of sorts the next year with Kaadhalukku Mariyaathai.

Devi is the daughter of the Veteran
T.V.gopalakrishnan
Devi was introduced by IR in this film
and her song "Otha ruba tharen" was a smash hit
but couldnt find a place in TFM yet
a nice song, lyrics by Kasthoori raja himself and typical folk style music by IR which comes his way easily

SD's 'Hey Mittel' (for Mister) would never fail to bring forth a contortion even on the faces of the 'crystalised', like Jeetendra and Sanjay Dutt. Hail the kudumba viLakku of the 60s!!! For guys yearning for a 'muzhu neeLa nagaichhuvai', please watch maNappanthal, a maNa pEthhal. Asokan and SD.........but aaah!!! but such creations exist for us to enjoy the better times that much more !!!
Onion, aNNI's 'clenched fists' reaction to any situation on screen was no less a tortuous experience.

bb, your writeup suggests more reasons as to why this song shouldnt have been SOTD :-) Late 90s IRku there are a few songs like "Niram pirithu paarthen", "isaiyil thidangudhamma" etc. But 90-95 has many more songs and this phase probably hasnt been represented all that well so far IMO. I can give you quite a list in case you are interested.

I agree with vijay. If you think this song is so mediocre, what's the sense in having it as a SOTD? I guess mediocrity loves company! >:-)

I remember reading an interview of Devi where she had bemoaned that she wasn't credited for 'Otha rooba thaaren',- she also claimed that she had sung that amazing 'vandhaal vandhaal rajakumari' from Oru Oorla Oru Rajakumari,(What a song!), but was disappointed that her name wasn't mentioned anywhere. I haven't seen the film- Can anyone clarify?
Two other songs where Devi gave a fair account of herself were 'Nooraandukku oru murai' (Thaayin Manikkodi) and 'Aadaam evaal' (Priyam), both by Vidyasagar.
'Naatuppura paattu onnu' where Manorama enthusiastically joins Chitra in the vocals is my pick from the film.

Saravanan, Otha rooba thaaren was a very ordinary song and recycled from Ennadi Muniyamma(who was the MD?). Devi doesnt have to feel bad about not getting credited for that song. Vandhal vandhaal rajakumari-now that was a stunner.Who was the female singer in Arumbum thaLire from Chandralekha, Preeti Uttam singh?
- From: Saravanan (@ 195.229.241.170)
on: Mon Mar 1 13:00:27 EST 2004
Vijay, 'Ennadi Muniyamma' is from 'Vaanga Maapillai Vaanga'-1984. Sung by TKS Natarajan. The song was originally composed by S.M.Subbiah Naidu long back, but S-G used it for this film.
I vaguely recall the female singer in Arumbu thalire to be someone called Geetha, though I'm not sure. IR used some new voices during that period- 'Oru kootil' (Kolangal) was by Lekha, 'Poonkaatrile' (Paatu paadavaa) was by Sindhu, 'Allah un aanai padi'(Chandralekha) and 'Kaadhal vaanile'(Rasiah) by Preeti Uttamsingh

Song of the Day: ammamma kELadi thOzhi from karuppu paNam.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/ammamma.rm
- Sung by L.R.Eswari. Music by MSV/TKR. It is difficult to imagine anyone else for this song. L.R.Eswari injects such life into this number. Often typecast as a rock/cabaret type singer, she does full justice to this slow song. The song has a haunting asareeri effect; The sound of wind blowing in the background adds to the effect.
- MahendraRaj wrote in the Kannadasan thread:
In 1964 when he produced 'Karuppu Panam' he had a tough time sourcing for a hero. Initially, he had booked MR Radha for this film but it seemed the latter stealthily whispered to MGR that the theme of this film was to attack him (MGR). MR Radha was withdrawn and due to MGR's influence others did not dare to come forward to act in that role lest it incurs the wrath of 'sinnavar'.
Finally, left with no choice kaviarasar himself had to act out as the gentleman crook. Although the film flopped but nevertheless it had a very strong social theme like the present day 'Gentleman' (1994). Kaviarasar did justice to his role.
- Manisekaran replied in the same thread:
About Karuppu Panam, it is true that someone carried tale to MGR, that the movie was intended to belittle and smear the good name of MGR. However, MR Radha refused to act giving reasons of poor story line. Kannadasan went ahead and hit MGR in this song:
Kayile Panam Irunthaal kazhuthai Kooda Arasanadi
kai Thatta Aalirunthaal kakkai Kooda Rasiganadi
Kannadasan also had a vested interest in taking the movie. He wanted to "promote" KR Vijaya who was a newcomer, causing waves after waves. kannadasan went out of equilibrium. He used to admire the smile of KR Vijaya. In one of his talks in Butterworth, he said that he simply loved the smile of KR Vijaya. In another article he says that the smile of a lady with dark complexion is the most beautiful and matchless.
Mahendraraj, the movie did not fare very well at the box office, but it was worth for Kanndasan to have invested in KRV . Please speak to M. Dhurairaj for details that I cannot explain here. Kannadasan himself is an opne book.
There is a song in the movie, where a Thalaivi (KRV)shares her secret affairs with her Thozhi:
Ammamma Keladi Thozhi Sonnaane Aayiram Seithi
Kannale Kandathu Paathi-Sollamal Ponathu Meethi
(The thozhi whispers)
LRE was asked to use a voice of a 16 year old lady, which she did very well.
Of course the other melodious gems are:
1.Thangachi Chinna Ponnu Thalkai Enna Saayuthu
2. Aada Varalaam Aada varalaam
3. Pattu CHiragu Kond ChittukUruvi Onnu
4. Ellorum Ellaamum Pra VEndum

Wonderful song, bb! Showcases an unexplored facet of LRE's infinite range. Its a pity that even after this stunner, MSV didn't experiment too much with LRE, preferring to give her breezy fast-paced songs, to which she did full justice, of course. 'Idhu maargazhi maadham' (Praptham) and 'Mounam thaan pesiyatho' (Ethirkaalam) were exceptions, and excellent songs they were too. It was left to V.Kumar to gently remind us of what we have missed, by making LRE sing 'Kaathodu thaan'
In her Malarum Ninivugal, (DD, 1990), LRE singled out this song as her pick in her long tfm career.
She even sang the pallavi, and then the song sequence appeared. KRV in a boat in the night, with a thozhi for company, singing dreamily of her lovesick longings-- the camera work was stunning too- muted black & white images of the city lights in the background, as the boat sailed lazily into the night. V-R's imaginative interludes capture the mood, time and place in an arresting manner.
Visalakshi Films' Karuppu Panam- 1964 was a very interesting film. The social messages were plentiful, and the wry look at the filmworld was particularly honest. Kannadasan, KRV, Balaji, Sheela, Chandrakanta were in the cast.
bb, SJ's soulful 'Undhan rajasabai ingu vaaraadho' is another song in the film, besides those mentioned.
