vengayam,

Your statement "Revathi's exuberance and radiance......made me appreciate Revathi's beauty for the first time :) "
Was it Major who mouthed this inane dialogue
" I am like a blind man in a dark room looking for a black cat which is not there" <<<

Cinema virumbi,
glad to know that at least you noted! bb has chosen to remain silent :-(
I am still puzzled with what people saw/see in Revathi. Hence the comment
yes she was very good in manvasanai period- but so was Pandiyan;-))
only one other "star" puts me off and that is Nadia moidhu! (Sarvanan only knows it too well... )

Revathi and Beauty? bb must be sarcastic!
Why MR/PCS decided to shoot this song in dull light? It kind of does not suit the mood the song.

Song of the Day: oru kOttaikkuL from kudaikkuL mazhai.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/orukottai.rm
- Sung by Ranjith, Sujatha, Suchithra and Authriya. Music by Karthik Raja.
- I finally listened to the songs from KudaikkuL mazhai. Yet to see the film. The sun tv "top 10" programme essentially gave out the crucial plot points of the movie, spoiling the film for me!
- Thread on the film: http://newtfmpage.com/forum/24406.00.04.57.html
- Some of the reviews in that thread:
This is another excellent song in the album that is not picturised in the film. The mood, the way the singers sing and the orchestrations make it chilling and thrilling to hear. The background is full of synthesized rhythms. The usage of horns, percussions and peculiar wind instruments with mild techno beats in fusion with violins playing the main tune in the first interlude is grand and great to hear. The second interlude is of higher tempo with percussions and gradually moves to Dhandiya beats with serious notes in the orchestration. Each line of the song is composed with care. Karthik raja masters in grand orchestration in this song especially in the interludes and with all singers doing their best this is another great number in this album. (Suresh)
Same case with oru Kottaikul ..The two interludes are drastically different ...While the first interlude is bit sufi type ,backed by the orchestra suggesting the confused mind of the hero ,the second interlude has some kind of John Williams touch in it indicating the change in his mind . After the end of charanam ,there is change in mood where the female pitch goes up ... (Mumbai Ramki)
Oru Kottai song can be enjoyed note to note. A fantastic composition. Very bold to have composed a song like this at this time of the TFM. (Shyam)
oru kOttaikkul song is the song which I do not like at all in the album. I guess taste varies. The backing for the song totally follows the tune this annoys the heck out of me. Even dEva would do a better job, ofcourse, you would have to give him the tune :) (k)
Oru Kottai - This is a serious one KR has done.Compare it to Ragsiyamai. Smooth flow from beginning to end , nice and simple Riffs. No dearth in the usage of Orchestra. Good job KR.
A few intersting stuff like the morphing of the in first stanza ..Male: "Iruvathu Vayathu Thani MaramE , Pasithavan roosithda " Female ending the line "Sammathama" ;)
First Stanza has a kottu rythm , second interlude sets the rythm for the second stanza, Timpani I think.
Credit should go to the singers , bringing out that unique feel to the song. (Listener)

bb,
Escaped w/o giving your opinion on this song ? ;)
Anyway, thanks for the nice song - I request you to also consider "Enga poi solluvaen" song for SOTD - it may sound very old style when you listen to it first time, But when you see it in movie, it fits 100% - Na. Muthukumar has done a nice job bringing emotions of an auto driver in his own language ! ('kaLavu pona oru auto-vaa .,.. puncture aanaaenadaa ... etc.,)

NagaS,
Digression:
Dont u get a feel that Parthiban himself has sung the song "Enga poi"? SPB's voice modulation makes you feel that its Parthiban singing.Same is the case with "Paarthu paarthu kangal poothirunthen" from Nee varuvai ena.Was watching "Illamai idho idho" yesterday in SCV..man it perfectly matched Kamal. When i tried to visualize the same song with Rajini,i cudnt.Damn sure that SPB wud hav sung it differenly for Rajini.

The first interlude which start around 1:16 and lasts for 50 secs is a treat..one of the best in recent times..
the second interlude which starts around 3:06 seems to be a fast version of the 1st interlude.
bb
along with this song u could have added the Theme Music instrumental - the best in this album

Song of the Day: sangeetham raagangaL illaamala from mOham 30 varusham.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/sangeetham.rm
- Saravanan writes:
Following ‘kaadhal viLaiyaada’ last week, I thought it would be a good idea to continue with some rare SPB duets from the 70s, each with a different singer, for the remaining Wednesdays of this month. This week, let us listen to SPB teaming up with VJ for the forgotten ‘sangeetham raagangaL illaamala’ from mOham 30 varusham. Lyrics by Kannadasan. Music by Vijayabhaskar.
mOham 30 varusham (1976/Swarnambika Productions) starred Kamalhasan, Sumitra, Fadafat Jayalakshmi, Vijayakumar, Sripriya, Major Sundararajan, Sukumari and Manorama. It was an adaptation of Manian’s hugely popular story by the same name, with Mahendran doing a commendable job with the screenplay. The film was directed by SP.Muthuraman.
Kasturi (Sumitra), a naïve girl from an orthodox family falls headlong into trouble when she weds the suave Ramesh (Kamal). Ramesh’s progressive thoughts and spirited ways fill Kasturi first with incomprehension, then alarm and finally despair. The problems that crop up between the two assume turbulent proportions and even lead to estrangement. The unfolding events with some dramatic turns usher in better mutual understanding and in the end all is well.

It was Chitramahal Krishnamoorthi who brought back Vijayabhaskar to tfm to compose music for his kalyaaNamaam kalyaaNam. And VB, who had been forgotten after a few dubbed films in the 50s, was given a rousing welcome this time when his wondrous ‘iLamai naatiya saalai’ topped the charts. He bagged a handful of films immediately, and with the continued patronage of Chitramahal Krishnamoorthi and Panju Arunachalam, was able to quickly carve a comfortable niche for himself.
Vijayabhaskar came out with some magnificent albums in the mid-70s. The combination of SP. Muthuraman and Vijayabhaskar spelled success in that unforgettable season- the songs of engamma sabatham (1974), mayangugiRaaL oru maadhu (1975), yaarukku maappiLLai yaarO (1975), kaalangaLil avaL vasantham(1976), mOham 30 varusham (1976) and aadu puli aattam (1977) that came from this collaboration retain their original appeal to this day.
I think there were only 3 songs in mOham 30 varusham. The reflective ‘enadhu vaazhkkai paadhaiyil’, with its signature piano-driven arrangements, would find a place of pride in any compilation of KJY songs. I remember this song finding frequent airtime even in the 80s. ‘irubathu vayathenum iLamaiyil’ is a breezy PS solo with buoyant interludes that merge so well with the exuberant ambience of the sequence. And the dainty ‘sangeetham raagangaL illamala’ is the unfairly overlooked song in the album.

Listen to this cuddlesome bedtime song that Vijayabhaskar conjures up, brought to vibrant life by his favorite singers. Kasturi apparently is in no mood to accede to Ramesh’s lusty overtures, and spurns his advances feigning to be sleepy. But very soon, her longings awaken, and so it is his turn now to act pricey! And, of course, in the third charaNam both make up with alacrity and redoubled passion. Oh, these are the intimate moments that fill marital life with so much delight!
VJ sets the mood for this charming bedside drama with her coquettish ‘hmm..summa irunga.. thookkam varudhu’ , and SPB, with characteristic nonchalance, brings into his rendition the ache of youthful needs. Kannadasan pulls in mythological illustrations to bolster the man’s arguments. And later when an amusedly vengeful SPB snaps at her with glee, VJ places her plea so gently and endearingly. Kannadasan’s lines here are eloquent, especially the woebegone ‘kootuRavu inbam kEttupeRum thunbam’ that expresses her wretchedness so fetchingly! Of course, such egoistic pretences are but ephemeral, and are soon vanquished by the irresistible draw of righteous love. And so the song ends, with the pent up desires finding blissful release…neendhi varum veLLam..shanthi peRum uLLam..

I always felt that " ....Porutham udalilum vendum, purinthavan thunnaiaaga venndum kanavanin thunnayoduthaane kaamanai venraaga vendum" from manmadha leelai just about summarised what "Mogam 30 varusham" tried to tell in 150 minutes.
and pray who scored the music for ML - MSV of course.
