Good work Aditya. I wish it was longer and you had explored more in each section. ShanmukhaPriya section by itself, could work better as a song, with some work. Transitions are smooth and effective.

Aditya, the Rhythmic Self-Realization piece was good! With a couple of more instruments to play the tune, it would be great.

bb, thanks for listening. I know what you mean with couple of more instruments - That was a live version - Studio Version is in the making and i have more flexibility.

Hey,
Alright a little degression from the topic. Yesterday I had the chance of seeing "Queen Of The Damned" for the people who have not seen it yet - it is a bit of gross vampire action movie. The theme of the movie demands a very atmospheric and dark music. I love those kind of music for some odd reason :)
Anywayz, if people have seen it, what do you think of all the violin pieces in that movie. It has an extensive touch of Carnatic flavour to it. People say that is more "egyptian", a keen ear would agree with me that it has HEAVY undertons of carnatic classical. I should say I loved it. If this music director knows carnatic music, HATS OFF to him. He is AMAZING.
What do you guys say?

sure Aditya will mail you more.
And btw the link you have given is ofcourse L Shankar
I have Eternal Light and Raag Abheri.
Raag Abheri was nominated for grammy and also got billboard award
both of them wonderful peices.
Planning to buy pancha nadai pallavi.
For both L Shankar have come up with a weird rthymic cycle.
Raag Abheri pallavi is set to tala cycles of 4 3/4 beats(4 kala)
In eternal light its Raag Kiravani set to 14 beats
(31/2,21/2,2,11/2,41/2) how about that.
Performance of Zakir hussain and Vinayakaram is simply mindblowing in both of them.
I recommend both of them to you.

Yes, it is L. Shankar. I downloaded "On The Beach" yesterday. In some websites I read that the pieces were actually composed by Richard Gibbs, for which Shankar played the violin. He improvised on it and gave a carnatic flavour to it.
The link is:
http://qotd.albumrelease.com
listen to "On The Beach" from that list. Also, there is one more piece in that movie played by Shankar. Don't remember what it is.

Also, "Shakti" is their group with Zakir Hussain and some big guys in Indian classical music scene. "Best Of Shakti" is a good reccomended album by music composers from all over the world. One more piece that they all highly reccomend is "Last Temptation Of Christ"

thanks Eswar the composition itself is very dark.
Shankar peice was nice had lots of raag charukesi shades on that piece.
The shakti during that time was lead by John Maclaughlin (greatest guitarist),L shankar,Zakir and Vikku Vinayakaram.

Shankar is no longer with Shakti. He is doing concert tours, mainly new-age music, with his disciple, Gingger. He even sings in these :) I heard a couple of samples, they are plain awful.

Hello Aditya, nice to hear ur music again.
If u guys are interested in some decent remixes of old songs listen to Funky Bodhi on www.mp3.com
Not the kind of remixes that get churned every minute. I would call it fusion rather than remix. The musicians are among the cream on Chennai: Neil Mukherjee (of the Calcutta rockband Krosswindz fame and a regualr with ARR and Harris), Paul Jacob (of the rock group TheBanned, Nemesis Avenue etc), KV Balu etc.
Also listen to 'For the homeless children' and 'Brahmout' by the group TheBanned, on mp3.com
Brahmout will test the timing sense of the drummer, espcially in the last drum roll, when the singer goes thakthik....... at the end of the song. And 'For the homeless children', which i believe the main theme is played on the keyboard is real good. If that is indeed keyboard, no special credit to say that the keyboardist is immensely talented. Again the musicians are the top of chennai: John Anthony (former bandmate with ARR), Keith Peters, Timothy Madhukar, Paul Jacobs etc...

Hi there,
Can someone help with this?? I am planning to play the accompaniment on piano for a medley of telugu and tamil songs, sort of an unplugged session with only the piano and my friends voice. I need help with the piano part in the song Thenrale Thenrale from the movie Kadhaldesam (Vennela vennala in telugu). I love that piece very much and am able to play the right hand part right, but iam not sure abt the left hand part. It sounds right, but I am not sure if its the exact thing. One problem is I don have a keyboard with me at home, so I go to the music school in my univ to practice the piano and I cannot play the tape or CD there, so I listen at home and try it in the school. So if somebody can send me the notation (be it by naming the notes or in staff) I wud be really thankful, thnx.
Regards,
Sam.

hi guys
can anyone let me know how to develop various western music styles like JAZZ, ROCK etc.?i play film songs on keyboard, but would like to learn these various styles.
cheers & thanx

Satsona:
The best way to develop styles is first to get a feel of various styles. listen a lot of different styles. Learn what instruments are commonly used, and what rythm pattern they follow. The next thing to do is imitate what you hear by playing piano/keyboard or any instrument. Theres lots of well done MIDIs on the web to help you read notes and play.
You can also try searching the web for book compilations taught in universities. I have made up a short list from one such website. Try searching for these at amazon:
"The Pop Piano Book" by Mark Harrison
"The Contemporary Keyboardist" by John Novello (available at Hal Leonard Publications)
"Stylistic Etudes" by John Novello
"Classic Keyboard Riffs and Rhythms" by Andrew Gordon.
"Basic Blues for Piano" (with CD) by Ron Payne
"Nothing But the Blues" by Bert Konowitz
Andrew Gordon's
"100 Ultimate Blues Riffs", "60 Of The Funkiest Keyboard Riffs Known To Mankind", "12 Bar Blues Bible for Piano/Keyboards", and "Funky Organ Grooves".
Once again, you should not stop with learning techniques but also try to utilize them in your own accompanying. Fake books are a good way to improvise as they have some roughly made up melodies and chord symbols. You can make up your own accompaniment from imagination.

And yeah, I generally recommend subscribing to "Keyboard" magazine (dunno if its available in outside US). The magazine apart from containing loads of advts on new products, also provides tips on playing composing etc. There is generally one section featuring one prominent keyboardist, their discography, their tricks to playing / accompanying etc - I found this very useful.
