Both the song in the film Avargal excel both in their lyrics and in the music. Sujatha, a strong female betrayed by everyone she places her trust in, has acted superbly. The last scene when she boards the train to see her MIL asking her if she could accompany her and when she breaks down is very touching.
The song kaatrukeena veli clearly depicts her desperate feeling to run wild and free and enjoy life. The other one, ippadi oor thallattu padava, is also a nice one when she is unable to talk about her miseries to anyone around and tries to give vent to her feelings through a lullaby.
Both of them are a nice pick

Wow, what a song!
THe intro itself is a masterpiece. Watch the juxtaposition of groupies singing with Janaki's singing to highlight the freeflowing wild feeling of her singing against the constrained, calculated humming by them. Even the jendai-folk rhythm has a hesitant feel to it, compared to how the mridangam flows like waves in the ocean.
Master musician MSV! And master combo...

An interesting thing that I came across today. Here's an Emily Dickinson poem, that is very similar to today's SOTD.
"You cannot put a fire out"
You cannot put a fire out;
A thing that can ignite
Can go, itself, without a fan
Upon the slowest night.
You cannot fold a flood
And put it in a drawer, --
Because the winds would find it out,
And tell your cedar floor.
-- Emily Dickinson
Great minds think alike? or did Kannadasan read Dickinson?

MSV-essence permeates the song. Lovely lyrics. SOTD seems to be the most valuable player of TFM page. Good work.

Song of the Day: manithan enbavan dheivamaagalaam from Sumaithaangi.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/manithan.rm
- Day before yesterday, the Medimix-Dinakaran awards show was shown in Sun TV. A drab show, with garish dancers gyrating to latest songs, and awards of a quality that seemed to put MTv viewer choice awards to shame. But, there was a moment that stood out in this show. That was the felicitation to Director Sridhar.
Sridhar was brought to the stage in a wheel chair. He was visibly ailing, but was overcome with emotion. Kamalhaasan was asked to present him with a lifetime achievement award, and speak a few words. On seeing the man in this state, everyone in the auditorium broke down and were in tears. Sridhar, the majestic director who revolutionized the scene in films, was just a pale shadow of his self. Kamal gave a heartfelt speech, on how he 'caught the last bus' of Sridhar, how his generation grew up on the films of Sridhar, and how he would be glad if he were to be recognized like this at the end of his career. Sridhar was given a standing ovation. Sridhar apparently cannot speak, and was trying hard to fight away tears. Tears, of success, of a lasting sense of achievement, tears, of a man who was far ahead of his times, tears, of a man for whom the twilight of his life would be hard to digest. The moment continues to linger in my mind.
Sumaithaangi was one of his films, that features two of Kannadasan's greatest songs, manidhan enbavan and mayakkamaa kalakkamaa.
- Mahendraraj writes on this song in the Kannadasan thread:
Sridhar and Kannadhasan were buddies ever since they started to work together from the "Meenda Sorgam" era circa.1959/1960. "Sumaithaangi" (1963) was a joint effort by both these stalwarts. Whilst shooting the song scene "Manithan Enbavan Deivamaagalam" Kavinjar reminisced his first day of arriving penniless in Chennai way back in the early 40s. It was the very spot in the beach where he was shooed away by policemen for sleeping for the night. He then asked Sridhar to do the song scene with his own eight "Ambassador" cars giving the spotlight on Gemini Ganesh, the hero, instead of the usual studio lights. The scene was not to show of his wealth but to show how a penniless man can achieve such a transition in life purely on true grits. It was a well known fact in the film circles that Kavinjar rarely visited shooting scenes or song recordings even if it were to be his own scriptings. But this scene was an exemption as he wanted to motivate the viwers through his own example. Anyway the song is a gem of a motivation theme even till todate. Incidentally, this was the only film in which Sridhar appears in a very, very minor role.

Sad to see him in such a state. Good that he is recognized atleast in low profile award functions like this.He deserves this and much more.
Its a shame that unlike in Hollywood, we dont have a Tamil film academy or an authority like that conferring lifetime achievment awards or something like that to forgotten artistes like him. Cho was lamenting about this fact in the programme on MSV. This, in spite of the fact that cinema is a big thing in T.N. There are many nadhaswaram artistes too who are languishing in poverty without getting any help. I was moved reading the fate of Bismillah Khan, the famous shenai player who has even played for MSV before.

Gemini,Devika,Muthuraman,L.Vijayalakshmi were the Crew.
L.vijayalakshmi will be Pretty in this movie-she played Gemini's Sister
All the Songs were Smash hit
1.Mayakkama Kalakama - PBS Master piece by Kannadasan
by which Lyricist Vaali got Hope
Not only him Many would have ..
2. Raadhai ketra kannano - SJ
3. Oh oh Mambazhathu Vandu - PBS-SJ
4. Endhan Paruvathin Kelvikku-PBS-SJ

Reg Dinakaran Award.. yes Sreedhar was Given a standing Ovation which is a good Sign but he's not the only one director as mentioned in the Function. He is one among those who turned Tamil cinema. The other being K.Balachander which was mentioned by Vivek & VM(VM said KB only Re-introduced the Lyricist Category for NAtional Awards)

Great choice again, bb!
Visalakshi Films' Sumaithaangi-1962, based on Ra.Ki.Rangarajan's story was among Sridhar's best efforts- unfortunately the film was not a commercial success.
The story was perhaps too depressing to digest, but engrossing narration, innovative camera work, restrained performances and unforgettable songs give the film a 'classic' status in the annals of Tamil Film History.
V-R's songs (PBS & SJ were the only singers) became immensely popular in spite of the film's failure.
raj- you have left out 'En annai seitha paavam'- a haunting pathos number by SJ.
btw, 'Endhan paruvathin kelvikku' became 'Endhan paarvaiyin kelvikku' for the film version!
'Manithan enbavan'- a gentle song, filmed on the Marina. Seems to be Sridhar's favourite shooting spot--'Enna paarvai undhan paarvai', 'Nenjirukkum engalukku', 'Nee kettal naan maaten endra'--
Incidentally, Sridhar had released his memoirs a few months back. I had written about the function in the VJ chronology- http://newtfmpage.com/forum/23571.6859.02.29.28.html

bb,
a big thumbs up for this song.
PBS-CVS-KK- Visu-Ramu .
what else do you want.
a chair in the garden
a gentle breeze
close your eyes a
nd go back in space!
Regarding CVS he was perhaps the first star director ( of course ardent fans of K Subramaniam & Ellis R Duncan may argue otherwise) but CV Sridhar's Kavadai was the movie's USP. His great sense of music no doubt helped. With exception of mythology/historical he has touched all genres-pathos to comedy to farce to teenage romance to reincarnation to spy capers he has done it all.
He has also basked in fame, glory . But that is life. It comes a full circle.

Great choices for recent SOTDs. I am sure Manidhan and Mayakkamaa have helped thousands get thru difficult times in life - amazing insight and melodious music. A sad movie that stays with you. Great comments from DFers.
