I'm a new visitor to this website. I couldn't see anyone discussing about Vani Jayaram's songs.
Let me start this one.(It had been there previously pls. forgive me!)
"Ezhu swarangalukkul ethanai paadal..
Ithaya surangathul ethanai kelvi...
Vaazhum manitharukkul ethanai salanam.."
Wow! Beautiful voice!

Thanks for the latest instalment. You are right about the first movie. Karunamayudu was the telugu original. Vijayachander became very popular with his roles of Jesus Christ and Shirdi Saibaba.
The songs in telugu are available at here: http://www.andhravilas.com/moviedetail.asp?fid=|63|253|242|226, if anyone is interested.
I heard the song by Vani. She performed so effortlessly through the subtle gamakas for this vamp song. The telugu original was sung by Janaki (Ee kannu, first song in the list) which is equally seductive.
However Vani has a song in the telugu version. It is called Kadile muvvala sandhadilo (the third song "Kadile" in the list). She infuses some "naughtiness" and enthusiasm into this song as per its requirement. Nice song. Do listen to it if you get a chance. Is this song present in the tamil version? I didn't see any other female song in your list.

Kaumudi -
I just listened to Kadile. It is, as you say, a "naughty"ness filled solo. All sighs and suggestions, the composition is bouyant and VJ infuses it with a casual charm that is spontaneous and refreshing.
I am sure you must have also wondered why it is rather difficult to come by a VJ song (telugu or malayalam) at other websites? Please keep us informed of any other telugu songs you may know of - with links!

Prompted by by Kaumudi's connection of Karunamoorthi / Karunamayudu, I had this thought:
You know how our Oliyum Oliyum was (and still is?) given to "mood-secularism" and certain songs were a must during national celebrations, and christian hindu muslim "big" days:
Ellorum Kondaduvom for Ramadan (or Vaanukku Thandhai Evano, or Chandirap Piraippaarththaen...)
Indhiya Naadadhu En Veedu for Independence Day, Naadu Adhai Naadu, or Mahan Gandhi Mahan or Kottu Murase)
now, the question:
Was "Deva Maindhan Pogindraan" from Karunamoorthi? This song was a must around Good Friday as it was a depiction of the stations of the cross. (the other contenders for this slot were Maadha Un Kovilil, Neelakkadalin Oraththil, Devane Ennai Paarungal...)
Am I on the right track? (no pun!!) :-)

Thanks for the link; got a clear idea of the vulgarization. I have heard that some of these things are being done purposely!
Saravanan:
ellaam avan seydhadhu...
what a nice song! I am hearing it after many years. Thanks for the mp3, which is very clear and noise-free.

Saravanan,
Thanks for the special edition of the Chronology. I remembered "pAppa kaNNE pAppA" song after listening to it. Such a soothing composition. It was always the "eLimai" and the clarity in Soolamanagalam sisters' songs and compositions that connected them instantly with the masses. Their contribution to tamil music is immense.
I have never heard "en kaNgaL" before. What a wonderful performance! I am sure AIR banned this beautiful song because it is too sexy for their standards.

Naaz/ Kaumudi/ sk/ Neel – Thanks a lot for your heartening responses!
Naaz: No, this VT Arasu was just a film producer/ director. But interesting that you should ask that- for there was a doctor by the same name, and he was a good friend of my uncle too. This Dr. VT Arasu, (who passed away last year), was the son of Mu. Varadasanar.
And yes, the male voice in ‘ellam avan seithathu’ is KJY indeed. I have mentioned KJY’s name in the song listing itself btw :)
Yes, I do remember the Oliyum Oliyum special songs- another Ramadan mandatory was Mu. Ka. Muthu’s ‘Nalla manathil kudiyirukkum Nagoor Aandava’. Deva Maindhan Pogindraan is from Annai Velankanni. Btw, we had an interesting discussion on Christian themes/ songs in Tamil Cinema more than a year back- I searched for the page and found it – here’s the link:

Kaumudi, thanks for the information about the Telugu original of Karunamoorthi, and the links to its songs. SJ’s song is good too, and the two versions transport me to the magnificent twin arched entrances to Samarkand that one reads of in medieval history! The EP record (that I found lying undisturbed gathering layers of dust in a shop in Virudhunagar) of Karunamoorthi had only the songs that I have listed. Perhaps Kadile muvvala sandhadilo’s Tamil equivalent found place in another EP record version of the film. This happened at times when a film had too many songs to fit into one record.
sk/ Neel- yes, ‘ellam avan seithathu’ is a song whose appeal lies in its simple tranquility, and the reassuring message of the Omnipresence caring for us and keeping us in His protection. Kannadasan’s lines beautifully bring out the magic of God’s wondrous creations- and I keep drawing parallels with Cecil Alexander’s hymn that I had referred to. ‘Poo vandha kathaiyum nee vandha kathaiyum avan thandha selvam papa’ always moves me at each listen. As Cecil Alexander says ‘He gave us eyes to see them, and lips that we might tell, How great is God Almighty, who has made all things well!’
I can visualize Kannadasan sitting down with Rajalakshmi, and penning the lyrics, and Rajalakshmi giving VJ & KJY the notations, and supervising the recording, as the two gifted singers bring to life this wonderful song—what an exquisite collaboration by such great artistes - indeed ‘Andha deivam avargal uravaanathu!’

Dr. V Thirunaavukk Arasu has attended to many a medical calamity in our family! Small World, indeed!
It's disturbing how I remember Neelakkadalin and Vaanamenum Veedhiyile from Annai Vellankanni, but think of Deva Maindhan as being from Karunamoorthi (and Jesus knows I should know better, given the number of times I have seen the song on Oliyum Oliyum!) Thanks for the disturbance? :-)
Neel D has uploaded Maalai Mudhal Kaalai at the website. A slow-burn jazz-ish experiment by IR (There's a trace of Puttham Pudhu Kaalai and "Lovely Evening" in there somewhere,) and VJ does a fine job that is also reminiscent of Haanprayi Main, Lelun Zara Dum Jaanam, Baaki Hai Raat Abhi (Joshila - RDB?). I remember there being another song by VJ (a duet, perhaps?) in Unnai Thedi Varuvaen. You think so, too?

Naaz: Small world indeed :)
'Maalai mudhal kaalai' is a song that I too like a great deal. VJ's distinct 'velai' and 'veLai' is so pleasing, and the mood of languorous seduction is enchanting.
The two duets in the film are by SJ, btw- 'oru naalil malarndhene' was by SJ & Ramesh, and 'en anbe anbe' was by SJ & SPB.

Thanks for searching out the discussion on "christian themed" (as opposed to "muslim socials" aa?:-)) films and providing a list of songs. The date of the discussion left me in a bit of a funk - my, how time flies (or warps!)
I have a few pages of thoughts on "minority" depictions in popular indian cinema, and the "christian themed" ones are the most revealing (pun definitely intended.) But I'll wait up for one of the Christian songs from your list to make the wednesdays or VJ thread - and then I'll precis.
Raised on Oliyum Oliyum, what can I say? Ellam Mood-ukkaeththa maadhiri thaan! :-)
I don't recall the tunes for the two duets you mention, although "en anbe anbe" rings a distant bell.
Do you have a MP3 file for Manjal Vanna Roja or Idhu Undhan Veetu Kili Thaan? I guess Neel D didn't find them on his visit to Chennai :-(

Naaz, 'idhu undhan veettu kilithaan' I have only on tape :-(
However, I do have manjal vanna roja, and request you to wait a short while for the chronology to visit it :)

Yes, the Kannada songs are so beautiful. I am sure there are many more Kannada songs by VJ and I hope to find them some day. Thanks for the movie names.
