Udhaya, you meant exploring Bhanumathi's singing talents more ?
Superb song, note that even the charanams for 'vAn meethilE' and 'vA veNNilA' are set to the same santham. Masterfully composed.

SP,
Yes. TR-ai patri en naNbar ezhudhiyadhu.
SL,
yov, don't read between non-existant lines. I'm strictly talking about exploring her musical gifts. She MD-ed "Ippadiyum Oru PeN" which has one of my all time favorite, "Ponguthae punnagai"

Dear Mr. Balaji,
The film was produced by Bhanumathi Ramakrishna and I think it was also directed by Bhanumathi. NTR and Bhanumathi were the pair.
The melody was further pleasanted by "No Pisir" voice of Ghantasala Ramakrishna Rao. Once MD M.B. Srivasan while commenting Yesudas voice told that he had a nice voice like Ghantasala. MD IR once told that he can gurantee a song as hit since he is not Ghantasala.
This popular song was one of the often heard song in Tamil and Telugu. Of course in the olden days' (rather nights) Iravin Madyil, frequently I heard the song.
The lyric seems to be by Thanjai Ramahiadas, the man who fill with good sound words according to the lip movement and Telugu word. That is once the Telugu song is recorded, then Ramahiadas fills with Tamil word, not to disturb the note. Most of Telugu MD like Adi Narayana Rao, Rajesh Rao, Ghantsala, Salapathy Rao preferred Ramahaidas for their music. He was the asthana lyricst for Vijaya Vahuni production.
Totally enjoyable song in all respect.
Regards,
B.P. Thiagarajan

Song of the Day: thaazham poovE vaadaa from kanavu meippada vENdum.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/thaazham.rm
- This song is from a new film by Janaki Viswanathan, the director of Kutti. Sung by Ramya Krishnan. Music by Mahesh (this film and Vaanam Vasappadum were the last films of this talented composer who passed away last year after a bitter battle with cancer).
- I saw the film over the weekend and liked it. I've written a detailed review on the movie in my blog: http://www.tamillinux.org/~balaji/archives/000296.html . Check it out if you are interested.
- The blog basically summarizes what I felt about the movie. The film is one of the better ones in recent times, an off-beat effort that works for the most part. The highlight of the movie is its flashback into the lives of the devadasis, and a glowing, radiant and wonderful looking Ramya Krishnan. This song is sung by her as she plays around with her son. The nostalgic feel of this song and Ramya Krishnan's husky voice makes it a worthy one. Lyrics by Arivumathi.

Good one, bb! Ramya Krishnan is indeed multi-talented--perhaps her musical talents need to be explored further? ;)
I have seen bits of this song on TV, and was impatient to listen to it in full. Thanks!
Strongly reminiscent of the style of late 40s-early 50s tfm.
Mahesh lives on!

bb: Definitely an off-beat song compared to the current crop. Reminds me of a tune in the 50s of a song by Periyanayaki or Komala!

I did not see anything great about this song. It sounds like a mix of 'vaaraayo veNNilaavE' and 'pazhaga theriya vENum'. Ramya's voice is not suitable for singing, either. She sounded like Rajini in 'adikkudhu kuLiru'

That was a surpise from RamyaK.Enjoyable except for the loud synth beats and key board sounds. The scene was impressive too.
But wonder why art directors stop their imagination with cuff kai,a nethi chutti/vangi/ottiyaNam/kasu malai to bring the period effects. The boy's shirt colours, the lighting did not bring in the required period effect.

Ceylon vijayendran has collected all the tamil songs from 1940, and I think he has written a book on it. I heard about it, never happened to see it. He lives in chennai.

'thAzam pUvE' reminded me of the old Rajeswari songs. Sounded unusual too but very natural for a lullaby.

Song of the Day: engirundhO aasaigaL from chandrodhayam.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/engirun.rm
- A short, romantic song to kick off the week. Sung by P.Suseela and TMS. Music by MSV. Lyrics by Vaali.
- Kanchana wrote:

I like the lines you've mentioned in the Chandrodhayam song. This song (and Mai yaendhum vizhiyaada song) is slightly different because TMS doesn't start by repeating PS's paragraph, but starts with "Aasai varum vayadhu" separate and then after finishing that para goes on to his version of Engirundhoa Aasaigal. The specific lines you have mentioned are my favorites, and I've always liked the way how they end the song there without going back to the pallavi---that way these sweet words linger on for longer.
- Sriram Lakshman wrote:
Was listening to 'Engiruntho AasaigaL' (chandrodayam) this evening. This had a raggae-ish beat. The prelude was a wonderful mixture of violins, sitar and accordian with the sitar prompting the pallavi. Just like many MSV duets of the mid-sixties, the charanams had different tunes with only TMS slightly out-of-sorts.

A Great Song to Start the Week!!
Chandrodayam had MGR,Jayalalitha in lead role.
This deals with some monthly/weekly journal where in MGR works. Jayalalitha born rich comes out of the house and fall in love with MGR..
Music by MSV is the One to be cherished and relished for EVER!! and ofcourse for MSV vaali's Pen gives beautiful Lyrics and one such is this..
Engirundho - initial start by PS is awesome and moving on TMS joins and both make this song a memorable one.
Other great song is "Chandrodayam oru Pennanadho" by PS,TMS once again b'ful Lyrics by Vaali
Kasiku pogum sanyasi - comedy type song by TMS,Seergazhi
Ketti melam kottura kalyanam by PS
Overall it's a good Effort by MSV and nice Lyrics by Vaali and sung beautifully by PS,TMS

A dreamy, bewitching duet. Imaginative and soulful. The innocent wonder at falling in love, and the struggle with hitherto unknown feelings find pulsating potrayal in Suseela's trembling 'Ennendru solla theriyaamale--naan--yen-indru maarinen?' And the bewilderment is further accentuated by the infinitesimal gaps that pop up between the words in 'Naan yen indru maarinen'. At the other end the man is unruffled and amused at her wonder, and TMS is rightfully assertive in his 'Naan--thaan--unnai maatrinen' MGR's eyes twinkling with glee, as he mouths 'Devi' just before TMS starts on the pallavi is a joy to behold.
Chandrodayam (1966/ Saravana Films/ G.N.Velumani/ K.Shankar) was a superb album by MSV. Two songs, other than those mentioned are 'Buddhan yesu gandhi pirandhadhu' (TMS) and 'Pudhiyadhor ulagam seivom (Seergazhi Govindararajan)

Everytime we listen to this song at his home in Dar es Salam my friend Krishnan will exclaim "Antha "engiruntho" nijamagave engiruntho varuthu paatheengaLa - athu than MSV".We used to discuss about the other songs which start with "Engu"and would attempt to evaluate those songs with this one.
Enge Nimmathi(MSV-TKR)
Engeyeo etho paatondru ketean(IR)
engiruntho oru kural vanthathu(MSV)
engiruntho vanthan (both KVM and MSV ones)
engengum avaL mugam (PJ-KVM)
Engeyo paartha gnabagam(MSV)
Enge neeyo naannum ange(MSV-TKR)
Saravanan added yesterday
Ėnge unnai kandal(MSV)
Engeyo paartha mugam (MSV-TKR)
But to me, to mean "from nowhere - From thin air" -ENGE gets the perfect treatment in this song.Athuthan MSV..
Keata padalai padiyavargaL PS-TMS -keatkavirukkum padalai padyavargaL PS-TMS -this was a regular announcement in ungaL viruppam of 60s & 70s.You just heard another justification!
