Continuing on variety in Raja's creativity, he has certainly demonstrated his superiority over others in his pathos creations. There are numbers that are as haunting as sonnathu neethana in conveying the message. For Raja the verses were not dominant over his BGM unlike the songs of 60's where kavingar was running the show in most cases,IMO.
Ever heared of a soulful ,meloncholic ,haunting flute recital in the prelude of a song that sets the mood of the song and walks you through the woe caused by demise of the hero's love , the emotions pining for the lost love, the pains of a downcast heart so much to make you feel the fervor of grief. Take a listen to 'naan padum mouna ragam' , the haunting flute piece blows off steamM so much to make you feel the agony. The violin pieces tell you the sob story. SPB adores the song with his soulful rendering and the lyrics take care of the rest.

Rameshb's description is so good. The lonely troubled solo flute and very minimalistic pallavi almost spoken over the gentle but haunting guitar strum is one of the most memorable buildups in TFM history. The anupallavi takes the mood to new
unstable feelings.
Haunting is the word. The interlude strings
depict a clear disorientation and thadumatram
using very unusual dissonances. Proves that Raja, after years of writing for the string section, could still surprise himself with a new style of playing. One other song that creates a similar feeling is Nenjam marappadhillai.
The chandam is very simple and whole impact comes from the emotion of the melody and the great singing. Vairamuthus lyrics really shine.
The beat's nadai(meter and feel) is similar to Kathirundu Kathirundu and Sondamillai Bhandamillai of Raja, which evoke similar mood and we can call it a thadumatra nadai. I guess this is a popular folk
beat used heavily by KVM - Padithathinal arivu petror ayiram undu. Its speeded up version is used in KVMs Ore oru oorilae Ore Oru raaja. Does someone have a name for this beat?
Wait, I am writing this all before re-listening to the song. Let me listen!

bb,
I couldn't find songs pre-Nov 2002 in your SOTD archives page. Have you removed them or have you taken them elsewhere or what is it? I would want all of the archives since SOTD started to remain in archives for my listening pleasure in future.

Song of the Day: amudhum thEnum edharkku from thai piRandhaal vazi piRakkum.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/amudhum.rm
- MD: KVM. Lyrics by Suratha. Sung by Seergazhi Govindarajan. Raagam Mohanam.
- Lyrics in our Pazhaiya Paadal Pakkam page: http://www.newtfmpage.com/ppp/amudhum.html
- Manisegaran has written a very comprehensive series of articles on KVM. You can find it here: http://www.newtfmpage.com/my/mani/kvm.html . In this, he writes about this song:
Amuthum Thenum Etharku-Nee
Aruginil Irukkayile Enakku
Aruvi Tharum Kulir Neer Anbey Inimel
Athuvum Sudu Neer Aagum Namakku
Athuvum Sudu Neer aagum Namakku (Amuthum Thenum)
Nilavin Nizhalo Nin Vathanam
Minnum Nilai Kannadiyo Unthan Kannam
Malayil Piravaa Maamaniye Naan
Koiyum Koiyaa Kaniye
Vaan Amuthum Thenum Etharku
Vizhiyale kaathal Kathai Pesu
Malar Kaiyale Santhanam Veesu
Thamizh Mozhi Pole Suvaiyoottum Senthene
Udal Naan Uyir Nee Thaane
Vaan Amuthum Thenum Etharku
Nee Aruginili Irukkayile Enakku.
KVM himself told me of the many songs he had composed, this , Malarkal Nanainthana Paniyale (Idhaya Kamalam) and Kalai Magal Kai POrule (Vasantha Maligai) remain some of his best.
When Suratha the lyricist for the above song was with me in Malaysia in November 1987, he said he won praises from thousands in appreciation of the Uvamaikal used in this song.
Seergazhi Govidarajan and Dr. Siva Chidambaram came to my house in 1986 and took away (I gave away) the entire audio cassette collection of Sergazhi's songs after he listened to this song. He himself used to sing this song at carnatic song functions- during the second half in order to cater for people of all ranges. This song has brought so much name and fame to Suratha the lyricist, KVM the composer, and Seergazhi Govinderajan the singer, not leaving out Prem Nasir who gave lip movements in the film.

Song of the Day: Background Music - I from azhagi.
Peeps gave me these BGM numbers from azhagi. Some of them are very good. IR makes good use of the flute in several pieces. Listen to the dhanam in school part, to get a real peppy feeling of being young. Several variations of the theme "oLiyilE therivathenna dhEvathaiyaa" are played, including at the end credits.
