KD efforlessly links the situation to puranic situations and spins the web!
Venkatesa Puranam in the Tiruchanoor para &
Kanda Puranam in the Pzahani malai para
Actually it is a KD & MSV( his scrutches for close to 2 decades) movie than a K Balachander movie. The controversies regarding the story- "Verum Mann " ,some neat portrayal by the leading artists, great lyrics with greater music and some fine singing are the highpoints of this movie.
Jayasudha-played the standard KB heroine, gums theriyumpadiyana Paythiakkara sirippu, loda loda pechu.Kamal played his pet role...angry young man with communistic thoughts...frequently quoting Bharathiyar with occasional relevance!Major was perfect.
Kavignar makes a brief appearance as Nagesh s patient (Nagesh plays a schizo; brilliant performance..naturally).
The picturisation of the songs clearly shows KB s roots ..stage dramas. This song too is no exception. But ...what a song!
Kumudam wrote ,"Srividya vin KaNgalai veithukondu periya set potirukkirar Balachander".She was elegant and brought out the confusion quite well.

Eg: paarthale paravasam , Duet(substandard movies).
Can't compare his new movies with Moonru mudichu,
Aboorva raagangal, Arangetram(his master piece, in my opinion), Avargal, Aval oru thodarkathai.

- MD: Sudharsanam. This freak-out song is sung by M.L.Vasanthakumari!! Lyrics-lle thamizh, hindi, english ellaam kalandhu katti varum :)
- Lyricist - Ku.Ma.Paa(?)
- MLV has sung quite a bit of songs in tfm. You can find a good amount of discussion on MLV here: http://newtfmpage.com/forum/4200.20053.7.html
- Saravanan wrote on such Kuravan-Kuraththi songs here: http://www.newtfmpage.com/forum/138.6859.02.29.28.html
- Here is an excellent Hindu article on MLV: http://www.hinduonnet.com/thehindu/fr/2002/11/08/stories/2002110801120400.htm
It states, ""Ayya Sami" picturised on Lakshmikantam in "Or Iravu" (1951) was based on "Gore Gore" by C. Rama-chandra from the film "Samadhi" sung by Lata and Amir bhai, which in turn was based on the Latin American song "Chico Chico from Puerto Rico", from the film "Cuban Pete". "
- Or Iravu also had "thunbam nErgaiyil yaazh eduththu".

Regarding yesterday's SOTD - 'Kelviyin Nayaganey' -- Saravanan had clarified in a post dated Dec 12 (See http://newtfmpage.com/forum/4222.20880.03.21.22.html ) that BSS sang her first song in 1973 - in the film 'Ponnukku Thanga Manasu'. Also, he covered this SOTD in some detail in his Vani Jayaram chronology - see
40. Kelviyin Nayagane- Apoorva Ragangal-BSS-MSV
in http://newtfmpage.com/forum/15229.6859.02.29.28.html
and Jeyaram replied with some ragam info.

It seems the entire story of the film "Or Iravu" (1951) take place in a single night! Dialogues had been written by Annadurai, also this was the first film for Director Pa. Neelakantan.

bb, thanks for this amazing song by the one and only MLV (Madras Lalithangi Vasanthakumari). MLV’s film songs reflect her outstanding versatility – ranging this folksy number to the western waltz-like ‘Ezhayin Kovil’-Panam, there was immense variety in her portfolio. How jauntily she carries off this song! (Abt. the lyricist, I am not sure if it was Ku Ma Balasubramaniam (who was the Asst. director as well) or KP Kamakshisundaram). I remember hearing the hindi original of the song-I thought it goes ‘Chori Chori’- perhaps some hfm experts would clarify.
Or Iravu starred A Nageswara Rao, TK Shanmugam, KRR, TS Baliah, Lalitha and others.
Excellent score by R Sudarsanam. Among the other memorable songs are Thunbam nergaiyil(Verma & MS Rajeswari), Kottu Murase (KRR & MSR), which is followed by the short Vaazhiya Senthamizh (Devanarayanan & MSR), Pennaai pirandhaaley (TS Bagavathi), Bhoologam (MLV), Vasanthamullaiyum malligaiyum (MSR), Arumbuppol meesai vaithu (TSB &MSR), Puvimel maanamudan vaazha (TSB), Enna Ulagamada (KRR) and Akkam pakkam yaarumillai (MSR).
rjay, you are right, -CN Annadurai wrote the entire screenplay and dialogues in just one night! (Kumudam Junction gives this info and says that Anna offered to write the screenplay for Rs.10,000- to which AVM agreed. Then Anna sat one night with a sheaf of papers-he began writing at 10 pm and by morning the 300 page screenplay was ready!)

I dont think anyone has seen a yaazh, it is an extinct(!) species.
My guess is Yaazh was the lute (plucked strings) in Sangam times and modern poets have started using it to represent veena (fretted).
Orchestral harp is the sophisticated version of the lute and has been used well by Ilayaraja in
many songs - for instance in "Nee pathi naan pathi kanne". I dont know if he used the real one or (more likely) a synth keyboard. You can hear
a little bit of it in my Symphony Humsadhwani.

I think Bhagavathy plays a harp as Ravanan in one of the songs in sampoorna ramayanam.
