Rjay,
I think Raja's "Kalyanaam Vaibogam" from "Naan Mhaan Alla" is based on this song.

Strangely, I am always reminded of Chella kiligalaam palliyile, whenever I hear the Minnal song Venmathi venmathiye nillu. :)
Batu malai thaipoosam must be celebrated with the magnus opera Batu malai thiru muthu kumaranai paadi pugazhnthiduvom, sung by Sirgazhi, TMS and AMR Ramani Ammaal from the movie Varuvaan vadivelan.
Incidently Sridevi's (of Kadhal Virus fame) parents of Vijaya Kumar and Manjula fell in love in Kuala Lumpur during the making of this move. :)
It need to be mentioned that Vijaya Kumar was already married at that point of time. (Kamal, what you are doing is not new.) :)

A grandiloquent piece by MSV et all. Sivaji tried to relive this sequence later in Gouravam with "Mezhuguvathi Erigindrathu"
Gangai Amaran, another huge fan of this song, based his "Anandhamae Alaipaayudhae Anaimaeerum Nadhipoalavae" on this song. The movie starred Prathap and Suhasini, forgot the name. Pani something.

Sridhar, I have not heard the kalyanamae song.
Udhaya, thanks for reminding the mezhuguvarthi
song. Its anupallavi is another MSV stamp - a
melody that does not resolve quickly, it keeps
on going to new positions in a teasing way.

This website is an excellent one for tamil movie songs. I would appreciate much more if you add for example more available songs of shri P.U.Chinnappa and also create a new space for songs of smt K.P.Sundarambal.As a classical music lover, it is very genuine from my part to demand this from you.
Thanking you and with best regards

bb- thanks for the recent songs.
Chathurangam was directed by Durai.
Enga Mama was Brahmachari's remake. And the Hindi equivalent of 'Ellorum nala vaazha' was the haunting 'Dil ke jharoke me tujko bitaakar'.
No bb- Kamal has not 'over-indulged':-)Anbe Sivam is a thoroughly enjoyable film. I am sure you will like it!

Song of the Day: entha oor endravanE from kaattu roja.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/enthaoor.rm
- MD: K.V.Mahadevan. Sung by PBS, and awesome lyrics by Kannadasan.
- Lyrics of the song in our Old Songs Page: http://www.newtfmpage.com/ppp/endaoor.html
- Manisekaran writes on Kaattu Roja:
KAATTU ROJA
Many discussions have taklen place about Kaattu Roja, a Modern Theatres movie starred by SSR, Pathmini, G Varalechumy and others. Let me just mention in passing.
The songs are really wonderful. This is one of those movies where all the songs became instant hits upon release.
TMS sings a duet with P Suseela:
TMS-Vandondru Vanthathu
Vaavenru Sonnathu
Ennendru Naanum Ketten
Kannendru Sonnathu
PS- Kannondru Vanthathju
Kaanenru Sonnathu
Pennendru Naanum Sonnen
Pesamal Ninrathu
TMS and P Suseela sing another famous duet:
Chinna Chinna Kannanukku Enna Vendum
Singara Mozhi Sollum Ponnu Vendum
Vanna Vanna Kannanukku Ennavendum
Vattamittu Padidum Kanni Vendum
Suseela sings the sad version of the above song as follows:
Chinna Chinna KanniyenakkuEnna Vendum
Jamunarani sings a song composed by Poanju Arunasalam. This was one of the rare songs that Panju Arunasalam composed himself in those days. And that song is:
Ennai Paaru Paaru
Paarthukkonde Irukka Thonrum
Then comes the famous song of PBS where Kannadasan plays with words. This is a masterpiece of Kannadasan with play of words
Entha Oor Enravaney
Iruntha Oorai Sollava
Antha Oor Neeyum Kooda Arintha Oor Allava
Udalooril Vaazhintirunthen
Uravooril Mithanthirunthen

(ENTHA)
Kathaloor Kaattiyaval
Kaattooril Vituvittaal
\Kanniyoor Maranthavudan
Kadalooril Vizhunthuvitten
Pallathoor Thannil Ennai
Parithavikka Vittu Vittu
Metttooril Antha Mangai
Meleri Ninrukondaal
Keezhooril Vaazhvathatkum
Kilimozhiyaal Illaiyada
Melloru Povatharkum
Velai varavillaiyadaaa
(ENTHA)
This is a song with such simple words, and yet with deep meanings. A talented and able poet could compose to any situation, any given tune and in any age. Kanndasan has left this song for all future poets to follow. But we are yet to get songs of this equivalence in play of words. (The closest I could think of is Paal Thamizh paal by Vali in Ragasiya Police 115)
P. Suseela has two more solos. One is :
Kathavu Thiranthatha
Kaatchi Therinthathaa
Kaanum Ulagam Purinthatha
Kaanum Ulagam Purinthatha
The other is :
Yenadi Roja Ennadi Sirippu Ethanai kandaleyo
Anru Ponaval Inru vanthuvittalendru
Punnagai Siethayo.
Background to the above song:
Padmini is the longest acting star among the Truvangoor sisters. From a dancer she became a heroine and acted in many movies. When Padmini got married she went off to the USA for a long time. She even announced that she wanted to settle in the states. While she was away, Saroja Devi was shining in Tamil cinema. She produced silver jubilee runs with MGR, Gemini and Sivaji. She was the dream queen for that short period of time. Suddenly Padmini reappeared after three years and wanted to act. She was booked to act, this time with an average actor at that time, who had few cinema chances. It was SSR. The film was Kaattu Roja. The cine circle started to hiss around that Padmini had aged and she had to take leave for good. But this went to the ears of Padmini who took it as a challenge. She was determined to prove her youthfulness. Kannadasan wrote a song for Padmini, shooting questions at Saroja Devi who was at the height of her glory. The song is:
Yenadi Roja (Sarojadevi)?
Ennadi Sirippu ?
Ethanai Kandayo?
Andru (USA)Ponaval indru vanthuvitaal enru
Punnagai (yelanam) seithayo?
Then the following lines would enlighten further.
Rathinak kambalamey! Adi Muthirai mothiramey-Nee
Naalai pozhuthukkul Vaadi vizhunthidum Maayak kathayadiyo!
Naan Sithira Penmayadi-Ithu Theiva Paruvamadi
Ethanai Kalangal Maariya pothilum Enrum ilamayadi-enakku
enrum ilamayadi..
- There was a very interesting discussion on this song, in which Bhoori claimed that it is just a formulaic song, and that anyone can write such lyrics. The good discussion between Bhoori, SK, Pal and Pala can be found here: http://newtfmpage.com/forum/8772.oldsongs.html

bb!!!!!!
This is one of the most double-entrende songs in the history of Tamil songs!!!!!
A sample:
I lived in her body
I floated in her relationship
I entered her womb
I fell upon the earth
I crawled in her eyes
I grew in her hands!!!!
I walked her legs
I arrived the male's land
I saw her spear
I merged with her eyes
In the milk-flowing youth of
The city, I entered.
:):):):)
The second verse gets worse. Just use your imagination. :)
This song is banned in all the radio stations I know.
Apparently Kannadhasan was with a woman when he composed this song (and she was not his wife either). :):):)

Aals,
In the first two lines, I think, KKD would have meant
I lived in (his) body
I floated in (their) relation(ship)"

yes, mr kupps is right
- From: geeth (@ 213.121.248.170)
on: Mon Jan 20 08:05:02 EST 2003
i agree with kupps.
in each line KKD has described a stage/situation of human life. each stage is described as a place(oor). the first oor is body. next is relationship. then karu, mann, kann.. etc.
the second charanam is about separation.
i have heard this song before (can't remember which radio station) and thought it is based on different oor names. only today i read thro the lyrics above and understand the beauty of this song.

Keerthi:
kELviyin nAyakanE from apoorva raagangaLwhich was mentioned by Sundar in another thread, deserves a special mention here.
This is a song where the lyrics actually substitute very effectively for dialogue.
Part 1: SriVidya tells Kamalahasan she finds marriage to him (a younger guy) unacceptable given her status as a mother and given the social norms, and asks him for his answer.
...........................
...........................
konjam sindhai seidhaal unakkuL pirakkum vetkam
thaalikku maelum oru thaali uNdaa
vElikku mael oruvan vaeli uNdaa
kadhai eppadi adhan mudiveppadi
Part 2: SriVidya realizes her deserter "husband" Rajnikanth is actually in the audience of the concert hall, and expresses her desire for a re-union and a married life with him.
thalaivan thiruchchaanoor vandhu vittaan
managai dharma dharisanaththai thEdugindraaL
alamElu avanudan vaazhvaaLoa
...................................................
Part 3: SriVidya reunites on stage with her run-away daughter who had wanted to marry Kamalahasan's Dad. Mom and daughter converse thru the song, daughter assures the Mom nothing "wrong" has happened and she will comply with the Mom's wishes.
Mom:
oru kaNNum marukaNNum paarththuk koNdaal
avai ondroadu ondru sollum paarvai enna?
Daughter:
irukaNNum ondraaga iNaindhu vittaal
avai iraNdukkum paarvaiyilae bedham enna?
.........................
and more....
Part 4: SriVidya pleads with Kamalahasan to make peace with his father, and he does.
...........................
pidivaadham thannai vidu perumuruga
konjam piriyaththudan pakkathiru muruga
The song makes the communication of some delicate (& twisted?) issues more tasteful, concise, and powerful than a mere dialog. Kannadhasan works his usual magic with the lyrics. Vani Jayaram's beautiful voice combined with the katcheri-quality music (where the Aavarththanams add to the drama) make for a well-directed situation.
- Sundar R quips about this song: "3 maNi nErap padaththil director sollak kashtappadum kadhaiyai 3 nimida paadalil solvadhil KD oru killadi"!
