bb- thanks for the three classic songs.
Sorry I noticed your query just now. I don’t think MGR broke away as such from S-G- these two films were just a deviation. If you look at MGR films, you would find that though in the 50s his films had music by various MDs like GR, SMS, Govindarajulu Naidu, TR Papa, V-R and KVM, from the 60s, it was only either KVM or V-R and later KVM or MSV. ( SMS was the MD for a couple of films like Aasaimugam and Thalaivan). In the 70s, it was only KVM and MSV, with the latter dominating. These two films by S-G and Navarathinam by Kunnakudi Vaithyanathan were deviations. MGR shared a love-hate relationship with MSV- there were some interesting incidents which go to prove this.
Thanks for the Sigaram song. All the songs in the film were good. In fact SPB has given memorable music in the films he was the MD- be it Sridhar’s Thudikkum Karangal-1983 (Who can forget the lovely ‘Sandhanam poosa manjal nilavum’?) or the dubbed Mayuri-1984, the songs were great. Likewise, in Sigaram, ‘Vannam konda Vennilavey’-SPB, ‘Unnai kanda pinbu’- SPB & KSC versions, ‘Itho itho en pallavi’-SPB & KSC, ‘Agaram ippo sigaramaachu’-KJY, ‘Muthama’-SNS & SPS were all good. I also vaguely remember a song by Balamuralikrishna for Delhi Ganesh. However the song that caught me by surprise was a brilliant solo by SPS- ‘Jannalil nilavu varum neram’- I think it will rank among the best ever songs of Shailaja.
Venkat’s post in interesting. Addendum: In the early 80s, even as KB was continuing with MSV for the films he directed, like Enga Oor Kannagi, Thanneer thanneer, Thillu Mullu- all 1981, Agnisaatchi-1982 and Poikkaal Kudhirai-1983, his alliance with IR had begun in a roundabout manner. The films that he produced and SPM directed under the ‘Kavithalaya’ banner – like Netrikkan-1981, Pudhukkavithai-1982, had music by IR.
This trend continued during KB’s films with VS Narasimhan- Achamillai Achamillai-1984, and Kalyana Agathigal-1985- Kavithalaya’s films like Poovilangu, Naan Mahaan Alla and Enakkul oruvan -all 1984, had music by IR. Then KB himself switched to IR with Sindhu Bhairavi-1985.
Even after KB’s last film with IR-Pudhu Pudhu Arthangal-1989, Kavithalaya’s Ameerjaan directed ‘Unnai Solli Kutramillai’-1990 had music by IR!
SPB earlier had acted in KB’s direction in Manathil Uruthi Vendum-1987. But I don’t think Vasanth’s Keladi Kannmani-1990 was a Kavithalaya film- I think it was produced by Vivekchitra Sundaram. Similarly bb, are you sure that Sigaram was a Kavithalaya film or was it a Vivekchitra venture?

Interesting to see three versions of Radhae.
Maybe we should call this song - "vidaappidiyaaga
thuratthiya paadal"
;)

bb,
Can you feature "Putham Pudhu Olai Varum" from Vedam Pudhidhu as SOTD? nice KSC solo, with IR-ish orchestration, if I may say so.
I think Devendran hasn't been featured here, so please consider my request before anyone accuses you of showing your Rambha & Manthra bias against him :-)
s: I can send you the song if you need it.

bb,
Can you feature "Sendhoora kolam" from Durga Devi as SOTD? nice JC-SJ duet, with MSV-ish melody, if I may say so.

Song of the Day: sonnaalum kEtpadhillai from kaadhal virus.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/sonnalum.rm
- MD: ARR. Lyrics Vaali. Sung by Unnikrishnan and Harini.
- Thread on Kaadhal Virus: http://newtfmpage.com/forum/17696.7792.06.29.48.html
Some of the reviews:
2)Sonnalaum.....wonderful melody.....i read in The Hindu that Shankar wanted this song for Boys.....unfortunately it had been chosen already by kathir! :) ..... this is the song which u can hear in the trailers (or shud i say ads) as well......unnikrishnana super
i would say this is the best song in the album.the lyrics are good.the vocals are good.the tune is excellent.check out the flute
i would give it a 10/10.
2.sonnalum (unni krishnan,Harini)
A veru good melody from AR Rehman Sounds like Poi sollakudathu from RUN movie ....a good melody ...8.5/10
2. Sonnalum - I am surprised Mumbai Ramki found it similar to Poi Sollakoodathu.. Maybe its me, but i cudnt find any. But, the start sonnalum ketpathillai sounds very close to vendiya varangalai (needhan desiya geetham in PP) but it can be forgiven. Unnikrishnan has sung a sensible song in a very very long time. And he does it in style and it makes me all the more sad, considering his potential, he is being wasted to sing Chil Chil Chillalla and Ovvoru Padalilum types. Unless he wants to follow the footsteps of hari who was finished off by his second-rate songs. perfect is the word. 10/10. (check out harini who is oh so sweet)
4. Sonnalum - Standard ARR trademark soft song. In the line of Kannamoochi Yenada (KK), Uyirum Neeye (Pavithra), Azhage Sugama (Parthale Paravasam) yet another Sahana! Frankly, I want ARR to do better when it comes to such songs.
. Sonnalum - Starts like a usual melodious song... but once Unni starts singing, the song changes pattern and looks a different song altogether... Unni and harini have done a great job , (particularly Unni after his series of failures with other MDs)...... Watch out for ARR's improvisation with a thavil piece in the middle of the first stanza.. This song would definitely be the best of the 6 in my mind...(9.5/10)
Sonnalum takes the cake for the melody. I loved the lyrics and harini does a commendable job in depicting the angst of "kanni manam".
"Sonnalum" is the pick of the album. IMO, the song very much resembles "Nenjey Nenjey" song from Ratshgan.

bb and co,
I somehow felt Yenthan Vaanin song in Kaadhal virus was a more softer and better pience IMHO. Sonnalum was a nice song..but notihng too fascinating. Unni and Harini go through the regulations in this song and the soft song with slow music does the rest. Yenthan Vaanin is a similiar soft tune that is elevated by SPBs wonderful rendition.

Song of the Day: jaathi malligaiya from maNNukkuL vairam.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/jaadhi.rm
- s0, I don't have the vEdham pudhidhu song. Please send it to me. In the meantime, here's another Devendran song. This is Devendran's first movie. This is a soft, melancholic song, sung by SPB.
- Devendran was also the MD for vEdham pudhidhu, gaNam courtAr avargaLE and kaalaiyum neeyE maalaiyum neeyE.
- Other songs in maNNukkuL vairam:

bb-thanks for this song. Mannukkul Vairam was a Kovaithambi’s’ ‘Motherland’ venture. Kovaithambi, who had struck gold repeatedly with IR (Payanangal Mudivathillai, Ilamai Kaalangal, Naan Paadum Paadal, Unnai Naan Sandhithen, Udhayageetham), fell out with IR after Idhayakoyil and brought in VS Narasimhan for Aayiram Pookal Malarattum and Lakshimikanth Pyarelal for Uyire Unakkaga. His next experiment was with Devendran for Mannukkul Vairam-1986.
MV marked the directorial debut of Manojkumar (Bharathiraja’s bro-in-law). It had a good story, with many characters and interesting twists. It had in its cast Sivaji Ganesan, Sujatha,Rajesh, Murali, Pandiyan, Ranjini and others. Sivaji had given a wonderful, restrained performance, as befitted the changed times.
This song is sung so feelingly by SPB, for Sivaji. Sivaji is the richest man in the village, and alas, also the saddest man- for his granddaughter, who is the apple of his eye, is a child-widow. (Vinothini, (then ‘Baby’ Vinothini) played the role). He brings for her delicacies to eat, dolls to play, but –only white clothes to wear. She wails asking why can’t she wear colourful clothes like other girls. Sivaji is shattered at her agony, and gently pacifies her and puts her to sleep, singing this soft, caressing lullaby.
