Saravanan,
Some two years back, Ragapravaham Sundar (remember??!!)wrote in a thread that 'naaayagan, avan oru puRam, avan vizhiyil manaivi azhagu! naayagi, avaL maRu puRam, avaL vaanil iraNdu nilavu!' from 'oru vidukathai oru thodarkathai ' (MD: GA)is based on Valaji raga. Your writeup confirms that this must be one of his favourite ragas (if not the most favourite!!).

Saravanan,
The pallavi does sound like a combination of Valaji and Sri Ranjani. I loved the way the charaNam unexpectedly starts off deviating from the main tune (much like many MSV's songs).
Ashok's voice is quite refreshing to hear and paired with SJ in this song, he manages to hold his own. His is a voice that's got a good tonal quality and is soft, without sounding effeminate (unlike some of today's singers) and his diction is great! His is not a flat rendering.. he gets some subtle gamakas as well.(note in 2nd stanza: taLir iLam mEni malargindradhu)I must say, it's unfortunate that singers like him never managed to come up. Just look at some of today's so-called "No.1 singers" (Tappu Tappu)!
Wonder where all these one-time wonders are these days?

A good tune by the multitalented GA. Ashok's singing is quite ordinary, lacking the finesse that is required at this level. The voice also leaves a lot to be desired.

Song of the Day: sandhak kavigaL from metti.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/sandhak.rm
- Sung by Brahmanandan. Music by Ilayaraja.
- Singer Brahmanandan died last week due to ill health. He was a prominent singer in Malayalam, but made rare forays into the TFM industry. The song from Metti is his legacy in TFM.
- Thread to offer your condolences and discuss his music: http://www.newtfmpage.com/forum/8506.10.46.25.html
- More on Metti and the song "metti oli": http://www.dhool.com/sotd2/424.html
- Somehow I always start off singing this song, switch to "naaNalil paai viriththu" and end up singing "raadha raadha nee engE" :)

Great song to remember Brahmanandan, one of IR's best IMO - thanks bb.

Thanks for following up on my suggestion, bb. :-)) Quite a treat to say the least. The interludes to this song are really super. Since I find Aarabhi raagam very attractive in general, hearing this song's a real treat, especially with such class orchestration.

PART 2
'Sandhakkavigal' reminded me of the Malayalam 'Kudamurai Kalyaanam' by Ouseppachaan, which I think is also based on Aarabhi raagam, and also has expert orchestration.
'Oru Maanai Theduthu' is another wonderful song with class orchestration. I like it!! Keep it up, bb. So far you've got a wonderful collection going.

PART 3
Today's SOTD also has a kind of sobering feel to it, aside from the fact that its singer recently passed away. What's the song about anyway??
Aside from that, I've observed how similar both Bramhanandham and Ashok sound to SN Surender and Unnimenon respectively.

Song of the Day: kaanaa inbam from Sabaash Meena.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/kaanaa.rm
- For the weekend, this evergreen classical number in Bageshri was sung by T.A.Mothi and P.Suseela. Music by T.G.Lingappa. Lyrics by Ku.Ma.Ba.
- There was a thread on this song itself. It has quite a bit of discussions on the song and on T.A.Mothi, and has the lyrics of the song as well : http://newtfmpage.com/forum/24627.02.23.04.html
- I like the picturization of this song too. Sivaji and the heroine whose name escapes me, walking in the rain with a strong wind blowing their umbrella over.
- Manisegaran has written in detail about T.G.Lingappa here: http://www.newtfmpage.com/my/mani/tgl.html
- Siththiram pEsudhadi from the same movie: http://www.dhool.com/sotd2/29.html

A wonderful duet by PS & T.A.Moti and a b'ful rain song which we could feel in the lyrics and rendition too

BB,
I have also been struck by the picturization of this song, and of course, by the heroine too (yAr intha pen enRu kEthka kUdAdhavaLidam kEttu vAngi kattiyuLLEn :)). I think she was a North-Indian actress and acted only in this movie(She resembled Saradha). A voluptuous woman, who looked even better in the song 'chithiram pEsudhadi...' (she must be taller than Shivaji Ganeshan).
I still remember the unique effects of black and white photography whenever I think of this song. The humming is so suggestive of rain. A great song.

Song of the Day: chinna chinna roja poovE from poovizhi vaasalilE.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/chinnapoov.rm
- Sung by KJY. Music by Ilayaraja.
- Poovizhi vaasalile was directed by Fazil. The film was produced by IR himself, according to Ramki. The film was perhaps one of the best for Sathyaraj. His on-screen rapport with Baby Sujitha, who plays a deaf and dumb kid in the movie, was amazing in this film. The film also had great songs. Apart from the SOTD, "oru kiLiyin thanimaiyilE" and "paattu ingE" were hits too. The film had great background music as well. In newtfmpage, whenever the topic of releasing IR's greatest BGMs in CDs came up, poovizhi vaasalilE was regularly mentioned.
- "Chinna chinna rojap poovE" is a lullaby filled with sorrow, in a way only Yesudas can deliver. I like the lyrics as well, with phrases like "thappi vandha chippi muththE".

Oru KiLiyen thanimayile is my pick. I feel SOTD is more of a routine pathos number but as you have mentioned the orchestration is good. The movie had a lasting impact however, I saw it in my 8th std. A suspense thriller with a lot of emotional appeal to it, belonging to a genre that has been dead for the last 20 years. IR's BGM was of course one of the highlights of the movie. Like Sigappu Rojakkal, the movie hasnt lost its appeal till date, IMO.

"The film was produced by IR himself, according to Ramki"
No. The other Fazil + SatyarAj combo "en bomukkutti ammAvukku" was produced by IR.
