Whenever I hear this song, I am always reminded of an incident, well, was walking down one of the office buildings (which sadly does not exist anymore - the WTC), when the song "Dont worry be happy -Bobby McFerrin" was being played in the building. After the song ended, one guy was just whistling the initial part of the song and just walking away - somehow connects me to Vanda naal mudhal - may be the attitude of the song..

A haunting song. TMS must have taken special efforts for this song to provide the depth to the lyrics and the haunting tune. The slight echo added to his voice gives a realistic effect to the song sequence and one can easily visualize it to have picturized in a hill. I remember having seen the song in 'Oliyum OLiyum' shows and I can still vividly remember it.
Equally haunting is GK Venkatesh's version. It sounds entirely of another kind to me though it is the same song with the same lyric. I requested if I could find this version in another thread and Sathia or someone obliged. You could find it at
http://web.music.coolgoose.com/go/music
or by a search in that site with the words 'Vandha'.

Good selection, bb. I remember every time I'd hear the song on tape, I couldn't get it out of my head for the whole rest of the day. That song is really melodious, IMHO simply the best song in the film Paava Manippu. Some songs just don't grow old, and 'Vantha Naal' is one of 'em.

Song of the Day: gnaabagam varudhE from Autograph.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/gnaabagam.rm
- Autograph is the surprise hit of the season. This film is directed by Cheran, who also plays the lead role. This film has been critically acclaimed, and is turning out to be a super hit at the box office too. Vikatan gave the film 52 marks.
- The film deals with a nostalgic trip of the hero (Cheran), reflecting on the various lovers and infatuations in his life. He Apparently, the film is a treat, sure to bring out nostalgic memories from the audience. I haven't seen the film yet, and can't wait to catch it. Tamil cinema badly needs such movies which break the norm and get out of the tired story lines. It is refreshing to see such different attempts. Cheran is capable of this, as we saw in Paandavar Bhoomi and Desiya Geetham. Cheran also did a good job as the hero in Thangar Bachchaan's Solla Marantha Kadhai.
- This song is composed and sung by Bharatwaj. The lyrics is by Cheran. Cheran recollects different images from the past in this song:
mudhan mudhal pidiththa thattaam poochchi
mudhan mudhal thirudiya thiruvizhaa watch
mudhan mudhal kudiththa malabar beedi
mudhan mudhal sErththa uNdiyal kaasu
mudhan mudhal paarththa touring cinema
mudhan mudhal jeyiththa sadugudu pOtti
..
mudhan mudhal azhudha snEgithan maraNam
mudhal vaguppeduththa malligaa teacher (Ha! who doesn't have fond memories of this!)
..
mudhan mudhalaaga vaanavil rasiththathu

Well BB,Does this one not fall under VM-Algorithm style?Mamiyar udacha maN kudam.Hmm.But to his credit,Cheran has managed to hit the right chord."Malabar Beedi"-adapongappa 1981laya grmathula ellam Thirtuttu dhummukku charminar puzhanga aarambichiduchi.Naan ennum pozhuthu etho sugam.............
Baradwaj has done a good job (though the song reminds Avaravar -as mentioned by NagaS).I prescribe inji-sukku kashayam for clearing his throat and nose.I pray he does not follow this one with another "Gemini".

SP, it is not the kind of movie one would expect to hit it big in the box office. that too when masala films like dhool, saami are the big ones.

i felt after hearing this song that if it has been written by some professional song writers instead of cheran himself,it whd have been better song. compare this lyrics with the song "etho oru pattu en kaadil ketkum" from the movie "unnithathil ennai koduthen". that song also abt old memories but with excellent lyrics. as mentioned eariler "nyabagam varude" is just an algorithm song. cheran missed a golden opportunity to come up with an ever-green song.

Song of the Day: iLam pani thuLir vidum nEram from Aradhanai.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/ilampani.rm
- Sung by Radhika. Music by Ilayaraja. I couldn't find much info about this singer. Not sure if she sang any other song.
- I rediscovered this vintage IR song over the weekend. The song has an excellent guitar prelude. The bass in this song also seems to stand out. Knowledgeable persons can analyze and tell us more on the bass in this song.
- Aaraadhanai was released in the early 1980s. It had another good song, "oru kungamach chengakamalam" by SPB and SJ.

Vintage music from IR. I am hearing this after a long time, not too sure if the singer Radhika was the same girl who used to take part in intercollege competitions.

radhika's singing is very good, especially when she starts the first lines of the saranams. hearing this song after a long long time, brings back younger day memories. treat for guitar players.

BB,
That was a good find. Never heard this song before.
Ilayaraja used bass guitar almost as a lead guitar and this song could be an example to demonstrate it. His handling of the bass guitar was so refreshing in a time when it was seldom heard and when it seldom seemed to have had any active role.
Have you heard the prelude and the guitar pieces in 'pAdi vA thendralE...'? That's another song which can demonstrate his expertise in handling the guitar.

I think it is 'ilam paniththuLi vizhum nEram' (time when a fresh dew drop falls).
