Does anyone remember the song "neelak kadalin orathil" from the movie "Annnai Velaankanni" (what a melodious song!!)? Is it based on mohanam? or what raga is it? thanks.

Prasanna:
To me the thaazhampoo song sounds more like SriRaagam (lot of ri ma pa ni sa ri ga ri sa ni pa ma ri ga ri prayogam is used)

Seketh,
nice to remind the old-nice song.
When I tryed it sounds like Sankarabharanam without Pa. Since I heard this song years back, I may be little wrong.

Hi,
I own a copy of Rasika . .The software comes on 2 FDs , needs a Pentium , Sound card, >12 MB RAM and needs 6 MB of harddisk space. Overall , if you ask me to rate it , I would give 8.5/10 . It consists of Rasika , which has 5 modules (Intro, Melam , Thaalam ,Raagam and Physics of Music) , and Gayaka , which is like a music player , into which the swarams can be coded .It plays the music in either veena or flute .The samples(char. phrases ) of ragas given in the software are really excellent . There is a small notation to be followed while keying in swarams , which is a bit irritating to start with , but becomes easy once one starts to use the software .
It is available from :
Mr.Subramaniam
339,Natesa Nagar,
Chennai - 92
Phone : (044) 4871513
It costs Rs 1400/=. In case you have the earlier version , like I did , it is available for Rs 840/=.
Bye

hi everybody
this is gurumurthy from bangalore
i think the song `oranjaram from kakkai siraginiley' is actually in kaapi ragam. it changes to desh in the charanam.
- From: MS (@ 129.252.22.112)
on: Tue Aug 10 23:46:26 EDT 1999
Gurumurthy:
I think yours is a very good observation. In the lines "ushaaraiyya" I can hear the "G1" which in uncharacteristic of Desh (I believe). As far as I know Desh does not have "G1".
You are right. It changes to Desh in the charanam. But it reverts back to Kaapi in the last line of charanam ("sonnathu nammalillai)". Thanks for your info.It is really one of the finest of IR polluted only with insensible lyrics.
SL and hrishi:
Thx for your info. I am delighted to about the CD. It seems a good buy. Thx for your suggestion.

Hi
Doesnt the Jiyaan jale song from Dil Se sound like its based on Hindolam and Dil se re in Madhyamavathi? (sorry for mentioning hindi songs,i havent heard the tamil equivalent)
Thanks
- From: Geetha (@ gatekeeper.oracle.co.uk)
on: Sun Aug 15 08:10:51 EDT 1999
Vasu: I would say that Nenjinile(Jiyan Jale) is in Natabairavhi, sounding a lot like the Ravi Shankar Thillana.
MS/Gurumoorthy: I must take another listen, as I identified it as Desh throughout and wondered why he says in the middle that he's changing to Desh. As opposed to Kafi, could it predominantly be in Brindhavana Saaranga(Brindhavani)? That's closer to Desh than Kaafi is?
- From: MS (@ 129.252.22.112)
on: Mon Aug 16 16:53:04 EDT 1999
Geetha:
Does brindaavan saaranga have "D2" ? As far as I know it does not have. But the Oranjaaram song has clear repeated usage of "D2". Hence I feel it is probably in Desh.

Hi all !
Could you give me any details of
the Raga characteristics of 'Iswar Allah' from 'Earth'
and
the IR-song "Oru Devadai Vandhadhu" ( SPB- Asha Bhosle ) ?
THanks a lot,
Dev

Dev !!
'Ishvar allah' is in 'Amir kalyaani'. For a detailed analysis of the 1947-Earth songs (by Shashi), click here : http://newtfmpage.com/forum/17868.20092.10:23:15.html
BTW, Does anybody know whether 'vaishnava janatho' is also set in 'Amir kalyaani' or not ?!!!

Does anybody know any film song near to or equivalent to "Hemavathi"( Sri kanthimathim is the only song in carnatic music ,I'm aware of in this raga).
Also any carnatic song in the same raga would also be interesting to find.
Thanks in advance...

Gopal: 'manam pola maangalyam' (chitra in 'puthupatti ponnuthaayi') is a good Hemavathi.
There are couple of arabic style songs (e.g. 'yeh shabba') which happen to be in Hemavathi scale.

MS/GEETHA
it is normally very easy to identify desh or kaapi of brindavana saaranga in the classical song but in films unless it is composed specifically. (like `hey paadal ondru' from priya which is kaapi). as you say it could also be brindiavana saranaga, but certainly there is one more raaga involved in the song other than desh.
what do you say?

Anand:
The list you have provided does not have many songs which are set strictly in any of the ragams as far as I know. But most of them are mixed versions of Natabhairavi and Keeravani scales.

nenjinile (or) Jiyaa jale is 'SINDHUBHAIRAVI'..
You people are confusing on other ragaas..
Rehman's 'margali thingal allavaa' is also '
Sindhubhairavi'..
Rehman's ' Theendaai mei theendaai' is madhyamaavathi...
Rehman's 'Anjali Anjali Pushpaanjali' is
Shankaraabharanam..
Song 'Pyar huvaa chup keise' is Pure Ameer kalyaani..
Rehman's 'sakiye ni thaan thunaiye'(film: Andhimandharai) is yaman kalyaani..
Rehman's 'maargali puve' is pure hindolam..
Gnani's povomaa oorvolam is 'keeravaani'..
rehmaan's bombay theme music resembles
misara kapi ( cannot call kapi completely)..
i hope you people are clear with some common
ragaas with famous songs.
Rehmaan's saukkiyamaa is maandu raagam..
Rehman's minsaara kanna is hamsaanandhi..
Rehman's malargale malargale is behaag raagam..
I hope you people are clear now..

Sundar:
I have contradicting info about some of the rehman songs you mentioned, netters, pls clarify.
margali thingal allavaa: looks like a Natabharaivi derivative raga, may be sindhubhairavi (whats the parent of sindhubhairiavi? Dr.Bhagyalakshmy's book says it is Natakapriya, though i think there are various versions of s.b)
Theendaai mei theendaai: i thought it was Sri, the 'rgr rgrs' typical of Sri is heard in the song
Anjali Anjali Pushpaanjali: i think and am sure it is Maand.
maargali puve: yes this is hindolam
saukkiyamaa: yes, it is maand.
minsaara kanna: i think its Vasantha. Geetha says its more of Hindustani Basanth.
malargale malargale: in one of rehmans interview i remember him saying that this is in Saraswathi/Hamir Kalyani.
Pls clarify. Thanks
