bb- great song by Joseph Pichai Chandrababu from KIM-1960. The film was produced by Kannadasan, and directed by, I think, K Shankar. It was a very confusing story, stg. JPC, MR Radha and Rajasulochana and was a resounding flop.
However, MSV-TKR did a fantastic job. Koka Jamunarani sang two of her best songs-the folksy 'Kaatil maramurangum' and the soulful'Penn paarka mapillai vandhar'. SJ too had a lilting number-'Malayitta mangai illai'.

Kannadasan in his memoirs wrote about "Kaasu koduthu vangi vantha Kavalai" - the posters were in two halves one half containing the word "Kavalai" and the other "Ellatha manithan".The half containg "Kavalai" was lost in transit and they had to buy it back from some used-paper merchant.
I am sure KD meant the movie too!
With KD and JPC involved i want to know how the cash/kind settlements were made!!What was the name of the production company " Madhu-Rum productions"?
Saravanan
can you get the details on "Mayangugiral intha madurai menakshi mayavan annanai kanavillai" - from Prayachitham and "Vervai thuligale pesungal" from Gnyam ketkiren?

- An all-time great song. Sung by P.B.Srinivas. MD: MSV/TKR. Lyrics by Kannadasan. Kannadasan wrote this algorithm song before the formula was abused by the likes of VM :)

- Lyrics : http://www.newtfmpage.com/tfsa/english/songs/paavmann.htm#KaalangalilAval
- Manisekaran mentions that Kannadasan wrote this song about his childhood girlfriend. I wonder which one ;)))

Song of the Day: Theme Music from Punnagai Mannan.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/punnagai.rm
- MD: IR. This starts with the "computer music" as was labelled in the original cassette, and then has the theme music.
In http://newtfmpage.com/forum/17981.13154.17.54.59.html , Kanchana wrote:
Re the Punnagai Mannan Instrumental:
mannAru, I'm glad you focused our attention on this piece; I'd forgotten one of my earlier discussions elsewhere about this piece of music. The motive for the theme for this instrumental is actually "exposed" in the very simple piano piece played by Kamalahasan a few scenes earlier, where the sounds of a door opening & shutting establishes the basic rhythm before the start of the piano piece.
A few scenes later, Revathy's clapping and a more elaborate percussion develop the simple door-slamming rhythm further followed by the computer developing the simple piano melody further. As the piece progresses, iLayaraja develops the theme more in the real sense--thru a combination of percussion, string, piano, and organ with varied layering and texture at different points he shows the latent energies of that simple piano theme till it reaches its maximal tension level, and finishes with an ordinary tension-release piece at the end to be in line with the mood of the scene. This is quite close to the definition of thematic development--using techniques & orchestration to take a simple melodic/rhythmic kernel and pushing it to the limit.
Variations of this theme are used as BGM at different points--when Kamalahasan's Rangoli is swept away & Revathy slashes her wrist, during their escape from the hospital and finally, when the car rolls down the cliff in flames.

bb, excellent selection. No theme music in IFM has probably been more interesting to me than this. What a composition!

Song of the Day: mandram vandhath thendralukku from mouna raagam.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/mandram.rm
From: Murali Sankar (@ 129.252.23.233) on: Thu Sep 10 11:59:09 EDT 1998
One beautiful song with admirable lyrics is "Mandram Vandha Thendralukku".
The song in the very first line indicates that there is a misunderstanding between the husband and wife. The second line
"Bhoopalamae Koodaathennum Vaanam Undoe soll"
It is one of the lines with a deep inner meaning.
Without Bhoopalam the sky can survive and so is the case of the raga. It can exist without the sky. But the very meaning of their existence is lost. They must pair up to add meaing to their existence.
"Thaamarai Melae Neerthuli Pole Thalivanum Thalaiviyum Vazhvadhenna"
Everybody understands that the glossy coat on the leaf of the the lotus is hydrophobic. Inspite of the two being associated for the very purpose of survival they are unattached. This tells us the story of the film in just one line.
"Nanbargal Polae vazhvadharkku maalaiyum melamum thevai alla"
This clearly demarcates the regimes of friendship and love. The couple need to have something above the normal plane of friendship. It is for that purpose that they have been united by the wedlock. This line indicates that there is no physical relation between them which is absolutely essential.
Other lines are:
"Medaiyaip polae vazhkai alla"
This reflects the traditional Indian philosophy. It contradicts the very much western "All the world is a stage" by shakesphere. It says the life is no play and implies that the wedlock is precious and has divinity. The line opposes the "Take it easy way" of the Western world when it comes to human relations and values.
The next line:
"Oadaiyaippolae Uravum alla Paadhaigal Maariyae payanam sella"
This line stresses much more the interpretations of the previous line. The traditional Indian view of the marriage being an one - to - one function is highlighted here. It say that a river if courses through many paths at the same time shall lose its might and content and this highlights the ill effects of Polyandry and polygamy. In the film this line indicates that neither Mohan nor Revathi can get over the relation that they had established. She cannot forget her past and he does not want to lose his present. This line emphasizes that the two be in good relation with each other to ease the way of living in the future.
I beg your pardon for taking a long time. All these are my personal interpretations and I welcome critical remarks. I shall also be happy to see any one exploring further into the song and letting me know the finer details. It is musically rich too
Reagards

bb,
wonderful song starting with Golden voice of the one and only SPB...wonderful build up in the pallavi and a soul stirring climax at "bhoop[aaLamE koodaathennum" watch out for the drums in the first interlude...I remember my college orchestra's drummer struggling to pick at the right moment...this is one song where the drummer has to be sharp enough to calculate arai idams and kaal idams(ithukku english-la ennappaa?).....the charaNams start at a 'mei-chilirkka-vaikkum' high pitch....
one of my most fav songs...
thanks BB for thios wonderful song
