Suave ...KamalA?ella SPB yuma? While discussing about "Unnai naan paarthathu" i had mentioned that Kamal owes his "playboyish" image to SPB.This song is another proof. The boyish restlessness and the aggressive ready-to-launch mode is brought out in style.Three cheers to SPB!(58 vayasula 3 peg mela vendamayya!).VJ cleverly follows SPB's style, hides well her in-built sophistication to suit Sumithra's looks and character on screen and almost matches SPB in every expression.
Memories of Kamal in Terrrycot "Pavadai"(called "Bell Bottom" those days!) in the posters. The USP of the movie (when it was released) was Kamal and Manian's story.SPM,Mahendran,VijayaBaskar names were in the very small print.
Vengayam, when we we started discussing this song last night ,Manmadha leelai songs hijacked the discussions.))
I thought of atleast 3-4 songs under similar situations, but the class of this song remain unmatched in terms of music, lyrics & singing.I was even chided for bringing one of them to attention .)))
1.edhu raathiri neram (SPB-SasiRekha-TR)
2.Masamo maargazhi masam( MV-SJ-GA)
3.Sugamthana sollu kannE (SPB-PS-MSV)
But even now i am expect Rafi to join Lata in "sahib biwi our Ghulam" when she sings for MeenaKumari .."Mey ro padunGi".
BTW Saravanan, this is the best EMKM(Elai maraivu kai maraivu) writing I have read in many years!Your English teacher must be proud of you while your MI teacher must be wondering as to what went wrong.))

Saravanan,
Nice write-up again.
I think, 'enadhu vazhkkai padhayil eriyum irandu deepangaL' is also from Mogam 30 Varusham

I sometimes rue why "Buvana oru kelvi kuri" became a superhit to lose a budding fine actor in Rajini and SPM , who used to make occasional women oriented films like 'Mayangugiraal oru maadhu', 'kaalangalil aval vasantham', 'engeyo ketta kural' etc before getting sucked into the mundane masala fares. There were so many SPB-VJ-VB combination songs like the SOTD, "Sorgathai paarkalaam ennidam", "mudha mudhal varum sugam "(KAV again), "pattu poochigal vattamadithaal", "thodangalaam iniya kanavugal" that provided the 70's radio listeners the much needed respite from the usually loud and noisy music that was prevalent.

OISG, didn't know there was anything in the write-up that my MI teacher would have been ashamed of :)
Vengayam, as OISG has mentioned, it was only last night that we were discussing those very lines' relevance to M 30 V!
Nostalgic, yes, 'enadhu vaazhkai paadhaiyil' is from M 30 V.

Saravanan
Sorry for questioning your knowledge. However my memory says 'enadhu vazhkkai padhayil eriyum irandu deepangaL' is from "Oru Kovil Iru Deepangal" an all new comer SPM film which did not click.
The MD was VijayaBhaskar too. May be the same song used in two films??'
Where is Ramki when we need him ...

Saravanan,
That was a nice song. It was as if it was tailored for Kamal Hassan of those times, with all those 'munagals'. I could even visualize him with his slanted eyes and drooping moustache singing it rolling over a oversized bed with a fancy shirt and pants! I think all the songs of this movie were popular in those days of radio.
Ouch, Sumitra on the other end :(

Bala,
'enadhu vaazhkkai paadhaiyil' is from M 30 V.
I guess you're referring to the KJY solo 'endha paadhai engE payanam' from oru kOyil iru deepangaL. Music was by V.Dakshinamoorthi.

Bala, saravanan: Another KJY-for-Kamal song that comes to my mind is "Nalla Manam Vaazhga" from "Oru OOdhappoo.." also I guess music by V. Dakshinamoorthy??

Song of the Day: intha minminikku from sigappu rojakkaL.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/indhaminmini.rm
- Sung by Malaysia Vasudevan and S.Janaki. Music by Ilayaraja.
- Sigappu RojakkaL was a stylish thriller by Bharathiraja with great songs that remain fresh to this day. This one is my favorite.
Mythila wrote in "Juxtaposing Ilayaraja" thread:
"Indha minminikku kannil yenna" from Sigappu Rojakkal. This song captures the night life of a city with its flashing neon lights, discothes and night clubs which could be felt by just listening to its heavy guitar laden preludes, interludes, the crooning humming in between the interludes.(Mind you ,the lyrics don't portray this as much as the music).
Kamal and Sridevi on a romantic car drive with receding city lights blending well with the interlude music. The intoxicating opening humming starts with a night club dancer, crooning and finally rounds up with that inimitable peels of laughter by SJ and Sridevi.

Wow! Great choice!
Lyrics by Kannadasan. The other song 'ninaivO oru paRavai' was written by Vaali.
SJ's humming is charismatically seductive and the interludes are simply unforgettable. So is the swimming pool sequence :)

Sigappu Rojakkal was the film with which BR once and for all answered his critics - read KB campwallahs-that he was no rustic bum and he could carry out an urban thriller with equal panache. That he did it with a character who was basically from the village is what is very cheeky. who can forget " kuthunga ejamaan ..." with the loaded innuendos (repeated by various comedians ever since!!) Barring the "saradha en manaivi " scribble the movie was done with absolute flair. Niwas's excellent cinematography -night sequences and the shady GN Chetty road as seen in Kamal's vehicle all added to the lustre. The songs were fab. Saravanan on a dissenting note I didn't like the Swimming pool scene. sridevi would have been better off in a single piece - what was that monstrosity that she wore a half dowser? If she wasn't confident of carrying a two piece a la madhavi she should have worn a single piece ;-)) what she wore was unaesthetic and should have been censored for being so!!!

ninaivo oru paravai is the pick from the album

To quote Kumudam's review
"paarthar Bharathiraja, ethanai naaL kuppambattiyilE padamedupathu, intha padathil nagarapravesam.... ellamE posh posh".
Kumudam propped up the "NOTHING NOTHING NOTHING" scene also. (later it did the same to Nayagan's Kamal's Mayil agaval scene)The review was on the I page.Kumudam review did a world of good to BR's image and to the movie.KB was not in their favoured books then is only an additional info.
Vadivu's role, neigbourhood children scenes,Office/house interiors,Bagyaraj's murder scene, climax -all well visualised and executed. But the scenes "TV fame"Sumangali trying to woo the young Kamal were pathetic.
BR continued with his lucky mascot MV (he went to his friend SPB only in Niram Maaratah pookaL -his 5th movie).MV has taken efforts to reduce his vaai width and voice girth to deliver this song superbly. But SJ's humming .....husky,dreamy,sexy and intoxicating.IR's guitar interludes virtually takes you to the swimming pool.(hmm.... only virtually..)."Indha Kadal pala gangai nadhi vanthu sonsham kondadum idam" -How simply Kavignar tells you what the movie is about?.
Two piece or one piece Sri is one of god's best created piece. She left all the viewers gasping .Ninaivo oru paravai song had Kamal gasping.))I remeber the demand for the Sridevi Silk kerchief and ofcourse Kamal's cap!
The mandatory black cat,the hand coming out of the mud were Ambulimama stuff but the lighting was imaginative throughout the movie to add to the thriller feel.
Years later Rajesh khanna did this movie in Hindi(with Poonam Dhillon(?) to add to the woes). The very pair created the horror effect but the movie was musically, technically inferior.RK who desparately required hair weaving for his head and with weavable body hair was atrocious.

OISG, ROTFL once again for the RK comment and others as well. Though it was obvious that MV was 'trying' to act cool, this was one of his tolerable ventures.
Sridevi best piece-a ? Hmmmmm..... nAn kalagam paNNi vittA yAru piece, piece Aga pOrAnga-nnu pArppOm. Appease eppadi paNNa pOreenga-nnu pArppOm.
