Hi! We've made a major addition to newtfmpage, and that is a big song bank. Dhool features thousands of songs for your listening pleasure. This site is a part of the newtfmpage.com - swara.com group. Together with newtfmpage, we wish to make this the best place to listen to tamil film songs online and know about tamil film music. Our collection includes old, new, famous, rare and unheard of songs. We are still fine tuning and fixing the database errors, so please bear with us. We value your feedback, and this will help us build the site better. Please post your comments below or mail to comments@newtfmpage.com.
This work was done by us (bb and RR) with MS and swara.com ravi.

TMS in his prime time, and that too in his early years, is a treat to listen. Interestingly, this song is set to a lower key (the pallavi, particularly) in a time when singing in the higher key was in vogue. TMS's other hits of this time are also mostly in a higher key.

Congratulations bb, Saravanan & everyone else involved on reaching #500! And an excellent choice at that.
Anyone who is in Madras now, could get a copy of Salil Choudhary's greatest Malayalam hits on a 2Cd compilation by SaReGaMa. I picked it up less than a month back from MusicWorld at Spencers Plaza.

Song of the Day: maalai malar pandhalitta mEgam from Akka.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/maalaimalar.rm
- A wonderful song sung by SPB and Vani Jayaram. Music by MSV.
- Sathya wrote:
I vaguely remember the film "AkkA". I think it was a Madurai thirumaran film. (other fims of Madurai thirumaran Mayor meenatchi,Soothattam, Sontham, Ilaiyarani rajalakshmi, Vayadi, Thirudi, Thaay veettu seethanam,Roshakkari, Sonthangal vaazhga, Badhilukku badhil and some more...) KRV was his favorite naayagi. All his films center arond the heroine and her brave efforts and sacrifices.
In akka KRV is a carnatic singer. Latha is her younger sister, I think. This song "kaNNan kOvil paRavai ithu"- KRV sings in a mEdai cutchEry. all the 3 songs for KRV.
"maalai malar pandhalitta mEgam" honeymoon song with a hillstation in the background.
KRV meets and gets married to Jayganesh a womaniser and a rogue. She comes to know of this only after the marriage. She tries to reform him and all her efforts go in vain. Finally when Jayganesh tries to seduce the younger sister KRV kills her husband. A tailor made role for KRV. As usual she performed admirably. The songs were good. But the film flopped. May be the choice of Jayganesh.
Jayganesh, as a single hero was not so popular among the masses.Other heroes of his time Vijayakumar, Shivakumar, Muthuraman, Jay and Ravichandran with KRV were able to give hits.
Later Jayganesh had a similar role in Sridhar's "azhagE unnai ArAdhikkiREn" .In that film Latha was the elder sister and Subashini (Jayasudha's sister) was the younger one.

Saravanan, I was about to write that the song would have been better if it were an SPB solo :))

Kitkat, the only way to listen to the SOTDs is from http://www.dhool.com/sotd_archive.html . idhuvE we are kind of close to running out of bandwidth. if I make them accessible through the main page and search, i won't be able to afford the bandwidth :(

Discovering this song was like a major excavation for me last year. Upon hearing it, the beauty of composing prewritten lyrics dawned on me and I started a thread which lead to some very memorable posts and creative developments (http://newtfmpage.com/forum/4854.8868.11.51.47.html) proving yet again that the best of art never fails to inspire.
BTW, the lyricist should be remembered and applauded while celebrating everyone else involved in the song. Here's the song's dissection with the entire lyrics.
...Another benefit to prewritten lyrics is the singer gets to pour sangathis to curb, stretch, and shape the lyrics to a delectable degree; with someone as dexterous and innovative as SPB it becomes a feast.
A prime example of unleashing the singer's creativity through prewritten lyrics:
Male
maalaimalar pandhalitta maegam
mangayidam sangolikkum raagam
kodi nagai pinnalitta dhaegam
gopuraththil yaetri vaitha dheebam
(just the variations in the way SPB divines maegam, raagam, dhaegam, and dheebam would be enough for a song to be memorable, but there's more...)
kaarga malar koondhalilae ilanthendral vilayaadi oada,(the way ilanthendral vilayaadi is sung, there's more sangathi and creativity here than I've heard in years, it just about galvanizes me)
kali paakku vetrilayai poala
varum sevvaayin isaipaadal paada
Female singing swarams
gama gama gasa
mama mama maga...(the swarams are probably to make a quartet out of the stanza in the song which matches the next 2 lines, again this wouldn't have been thought of without the lyrics already in place)
Male
ival thirumagaL
suvaitharum magal
thinam naan paadum sringaara kalyaani
(maalai...)
Female singing swarams
Male
gnyaanamazhai veenayudan
maharaani kalaivaani vandhaaL,
nadamaadum thirukovil thandhaaL
kalai nadhiyaaga radhiyaaga nindraal
Female singing swarams
gasa gaga gasa
mama pama maga
Male
nagai oru vagai
isai aval kadhai
aval naan meettum
sringaara kalyaani
(maalaimalar...)
bb,
I think VJ is perfectly sprinkled here with SPB like cool vanilla ice cream complementing hot gulab jamun.

bb, like what Udhaya says, what makes the song more enjoyable is the contrast between the unbridled flamboyance exhibitd by SPB and the firmly rooted in basics classical touch provided by Vani

vengayam,
>>>>But the kadalkarai has never been properly utilised in Tamil Films. Before anybody reminds me of K B, let me hasten to add that the waves have only overacted (?!?) in Sindhu bhairavi and Maro Charitra. <<<<<
I always had this in mind whenever I saw any of those 'raakshasa alaigaL' in KB's films! In fact, you should add one more to the list- KB's 'Duet', where a 'copy-paste' had been done of the earlier two films!
