i think "copying" is there for a long time in tamil film history. Here we discuss the tamil songs copied from others.

ARR copied MSV's song, 'Kallellam maanikka kallaguma' in his Hindi film , Pukar's song, 'Suntaa hai mera khudaa'!!!, including LREswari's humming in the original repeated by Swarnalatha in the Hindi song!

Copy, it could called a mild inspiration at best. The humming is quite different and has just a fleeting resemblance to the original.

u have to understand that there is a commercially available set of loops, beats and other mixes that anyone could use. so if just a bit or some beats sound as if they have already been heard, it could be something readily available. In today's music industry, the composition is getting more and more complex - with layer after layer after layer. So there is this concept of commercial availability - similar to the Open Source Code of the IT industry. This, by no measure, tantamounts to copying.

vijay, I dont agree. They could be based off the same ragam - but pukar song is very clearly and heavily inspired from kallellam manikka... You can make out first time u listen to it.

Swamiji, inspired yes. But not copied. LREs humming is different from that of Swarna's. There is a small phrase in the first line of the pallavi that is similar to that of the original, but that amounts to just an inspiration in my book, not a blatant note-by-note copy.

vijay, exactly what I meant. Its a nice inspiration ( I mean in a good way ). If ARR copied note-by-note, the news would have spread faster than u think ;) The two songs match in many respects, not just the pallavi, but the general structure of the song for example - Where background chorus ends and pallavi starts. ARR could have chosen to place the chorus differently, and altogether change the song's structure, but I guess he didnt want that. He was genuinely inspired by the song.

On that note, I think the latest Shankar Ehsaan Loy song in 'Armaan'...'Mere dil ka tumse hai kehna' is also based on the same 'Kallellaam maanikka' / 'Sunta hai mera khuda' numbers. Seems to me that all 3 are based on Mayamalavagowlai raagam. No direct lifts anywhere.

Karthik,
Agreed, They are based on Mayamalava Gowla. However that alone does one explain the fact that the structure of the 2 songs and the melody being almost identical.
Here are some more Mayamalava Gowla based songs: Do they sound like clones of 'Kallellam Manikka' and 'Sunta Hai Mera Khuda'?
1. Madura Marikkozhundu vAsam
2. Engeyum Eppodhum Sangeetam Santosham
3. Kuyila Pudichu KooNdil adachu
4. Uyire Uyire Urugaathey
5. kAdhal kavithaigaL padithidum nEram
6. JAgo mOhan pyArey

Dear friends,
If you would like to have the best example for inspiration you can listen to "Inge naan kanden " from sadhanai MD IR. This song is composed almost based on similar situations narrating the heroine, as in the case of Kallellam from Alayamani.

Karthik,
This one is for you. The recent LG plasma Gold ad, the background humming is a straight lift from the IR classic 'Uravenum Pudiya vanil' from nenjathai killadhe. Magindia created the ad for this. This would be the second instance, they went after IR songs, for their jingles.
Thanks

e.Hari:
Magindia is just a website collecting TV adverts. In all probabilities, the advt could have been done by Balki (Balakrishnan) of the ad agency Lowe. he had confessed the last time I mailed him about the Idea Cellular advt and Kissan fruit kick advts, that he is one of Ilayaraja's biggest fans!
Unfortunately, the LG advt is no more in Magindia's free section. It might have been added free in the previous fortnight. Anyhow lemme at least out the information in my site this Friday.

Just downloaded the advt from magindia...it was in the previous week's section which was still active!! Lemme add both versions now, this Friday!

Would also mail Balki to tell him that he's doing more damage than any other composer in the film industry - IR's classics. Now people would assume that both IR and the advt lifted from a common source. Thats a possibility too (see, I'm thinking along those lines too, but its only obvious that with a site like i2fs I think like this!) but going by Balki's past 2 lifts of classic IR numbers and his mail, I'm convinced that this is another one of such instances.
Lemme do my small part in helping people who visit my site, identify that tune as IR's classic composed way back in 1980. And to think the tune sounds amazingly fresh even today and sounds exceptionally appropriate as a advt jingle....! I'm sure IR would have given ARR's and HJ's jingles a run for its money if only he was in the advt industry!

S Karthik
That s the best delivery since Chetan Sharma s last ball to Javed Miandad in 1986 at Sharjah.
When did you join the bandwagon "Had IR born/joined/composed/written/filmed/sung he would have been "X","Y","Z","Q","M" "a+(n-1)d" etc.
I am one of your admirers for your hardwork.Even while passing opinions in your site there was never a case of prejudice or bias. You had allowed the readers to evaluate and make their personal inferences. But this time you have slipped,my friend!

Hi All,
Has it been mentioned before that the very first few notes from ARR's very first hit 'Chinna Chinna Aasai' is a direct lift from the New Line Cinema's logo theme?

Hi Karthik,
Unlike OSIG's post where he has written against you and not proving and justifying his cause for the subject matter, you came up with some meaningful post with research borning out facts. Well done!

Karthik,
I am really impressed with the adaption. The Song did sound very apt for the Ad.
At one level, it is good that IR songs, which otherwise not being exposed outside of TN, can get the attention. But I think you have a valid concern. How many people will realize that these jingles were indeed IR's songs.
In no time, some one from this forum, or some hollow NI reviewers will pick up this and it will give an excuse for an thrashing oppurtunity with out any basis.

Hi,
It looks like the "Thavamindri Kidaitha Varamo" SOng from the film Anbu (MD: VS), resembles more like "Vanavilley" Song from the film "Ramana".
The Songs starts fine but the interludes (flute piece) and the anu pallavi resembles more like the Vanavilley Song.
Pls throw some light.

To me "Thavamindri" sounds suspiciously close to the lines "Neerindri vazhum ila nathu" from "Semmeene Semmeene unkitte sonnene" from Sevvandhi by IR...

I just listened to a Madonna song, while trying to read about a video she will not be releasing. The song is 'Like a Virgin' - the prelude to the song is something I have heard in a tamil song..I think in a rajini movie ..not sure..You can listen to the song in Yahoo.

Did you check out the Sexy bomb song's chorus where IR blatantly copied ARR's Mustaffa Mustaffa song? If not, please do.

The song "Mera Dil Ka" sung by Chitra in S-E-L's Armaan seems to be inspired by Nusrat's "Humse Rahoge Kya Hameshaa Khafa" sung by Sonu Nigam in "Aur Pyaar Ho Gayaa"

And that line from sevvandhi's song sounds atrociously close to the VS Narasimman composed song 'aasai nilave' (the lines, 'kalaimaane kanthoongu nee') from the TV serial Iravil Oru Pagal starring Revathy and her hubby. FYI, this song precedes the IR composition.

Hi MM and tranknu,
True, the first few notes was a direct lift from New Line Cinema logo theme. Already noticed it long time ago but didn't bother to post here. Can't believe this guy has so many choices and odd places to lift the music from.
