One Kind Request.
I am looking for the song "Pani Katrin Kulumai" From the Movie"Panjami" Sung By S.Janaki had an excellent score by Ilayaraja.
If you have the above song in our SOTD 2002 Archive it will be great.
Thanks

Song of the Day: pOraaLE ponnuthaayi from karuththamma.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/poraale.rm
- The song that got Swarnalatha and Vairamuthu national awards. MD is ARR.
- I think the song was tailor-made for Swarnalatha. She has done a good job in this song. VM had his work clear cut and presents a good picture of a tragic scene. He writes,
"sollaadha sollE baarammaa baarammaa,
sOththukkum sondhathukkum thoorammammaa!"
...
"podhi maattu vaNdi mEla
pOttu vachcha moottaip pOla
pOraaLE ponnuthaayi
pola pola vendru kaNNeer vittu
thaNNeerum chOrum thandha maNNai vittu!"
Simple, yet profound lyrics. We can feel as though we are travelling along with the girl as she leaves everything that she has. The background drone that ARR gives takes me to the sound of the wheels of a cart that is taking ponnuthaayi out of her home.
- The tune of the song was used again in the album Vande Matharam, in the song "Gurus of Peace", sung by ARR and Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan.
- There are discussions on the raagam of the song (mohanam + anniya swarams) here: http://www.newtfmpage.com/forum/22608.ros.html , http://newtfmpage.com/forum/13835.ros.html .

sriram Laxman, re mannavan vanthanadi you hit bull's eye with the decription of sivaji's nadai. The entry and the swagger still lingers on in memory. Sivaji had his moments even in duds like lD Rajakannu , amara kavviyam & The remake of Asha ( these were the worst of Sivaji's movies that I 'd the misfortune of watching I might have missed a dozen more ) but even in such zombies you'll suddenly find a spark which would surprise you.
But mannavan vandhaanadi was vintage Sivaji!

Such a Wonderful song by Swarnalatha
she sings high pitch songs with Ease
- From: Saravanan (@ 195.229.241.230)
on: Mon Jul 7 14:03:14 EDT 2003
Swarnalatha's voice suits such slow, pathos numbers so well. ‘Aathoram’-Panchalankurichi, and ‘Evano oruvan’- Alaipayuthey are other similarly haunting songs.
The happy version of the SOTD,(Unni Menon-Sujatha)has its own appeal.

Song of the Day: thendralE nee pEsu from kaNNan oru kaikkuzhandhai.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/thendralenee.rm
- This extremely rare song is probably the only song that PBS sang in Ilayaraja's music. Some posts mention that he has sung a hindi song in the film Nandu, but I was unable to find more info on that. This is a slow song. At times, it feels as though the singer is IR himself, not PBS.
- This was one of IR's initial numbers, the movie came out in 1978. Raajangahm doesn't have information about any songs in this film.

bb- wonderful song, but its from Kadavul Amaitha Medai!
- From: Saravanan (@ 195.229.241.231)

Trisool Films' Kadavul Amaitha Medai-1979 starred Sivakumar and Sumitra. It was directed by Devaraj- Mohan (or was it SPM?)
The film had some excellent songs- 'Mayilae mayilae un thogai engae'-SPB-Jency, stands to this day as a testimony of the magic of IR's early compositions.
Other songs in Kadavul Amaitha Medai were:
Vaanil parakkum -SJ
Thangaduraiyae-SPS
I vaguely recall another SJ number that goes 'Hey thanni'.
PBS has done a good job, though his voice sounds strained in parts. S-G took the cue and gave PBS a duet in the same year- 'Maalai mayanginaal iravaagum'-PBS-SPS from Inikkum Ilamai.
PBS had earlier sung for Sivakumar in Ganga Gowri- 1973-'Andharangam naan arivaen'- a great PBS-SJ duet.
no bb- I don't think PBS sang in Nandu, though he is supposed to have written the lyrics for the two Hindi songs in the film.

bb,
Film 'kaNNan oru kaikkuzhandhai' had only 3 songs
- KaNNan arugay paada vendum by Vani Jayaram
- Moha sangeedham nilvay by P. Susheela
- Megame thalattavaa azhagin aaraadhani by SPB and P.Susheela
The SOTD is from 'kadavuL amaitha medai' only.
If am correct, te hindi songs that was discuused here, were sung by Mahendra kapoor

bb,
'Thendralae nee pesu' is definitely from Kadavul Amaitha Medai.
Vivekananda Pictures' Kannan Oru Kaikkuzhanthai-1978, also starred Sivakumar and Sumitra.
There were 4 songs in all:
1.Megame thoodhaaga vaa- SPB-PS
2.Kannan arugae paada vendum-VJ
3.Moha sangeetham, nilave-PS
4.Kaalai ilam parithiyilae avalai kandaen-SPB (a short song, from one of Bharathidasan's poems)
The Nandu Hindi duet (Kaise kahoon) was sung by Bhupinder and SJ.
rk- Thanks for the info.

Nandu had two hindi songs - the duet mentioned above (Bhupinder and SJ) and also a solo by SJ. both the songs were written by PBS, i think.

geeth, I too remember that there was a Hindi solo by SJ in Nandu- but can't get the opening lines :-(
Do you remember?
Btw, was 'Tu hai raja, mein hoon rani' SJ's Hindi song in Varumaiyin Niram Sivappu, also written by PBS?

yes, thendralae nee pesu is from kadavul amaiththa medai. I saw this movie very recently. starred by sivakumar, sumithra ( in double action)
kittathatta oru mukkona kaathal kathai.
sivakumar 1st sumithravai kaathalikka, 2nd sumithra sivakumar-ii kaathalikka, 1st sumithra endru ninaiththu 2nd sumithravai sivakumar kalyanam seithu kolla, 2nd sumithra oomaiyagha irukka intha pattu varum - thendralae nee pesu.
there was one more song, i think by IR * Jency which goes like E thanni, vaa neeradaa

kaise kahoon kuch kah na sakhoon - kubendra

yvs mani- I think hey thanni was by SJ, not Jency.
Thanks for the KAM synopsis- konjam Visu rangela sonnalum :-))
Yes, it is Hum hain akele! Thanks. Kaise kahoon is a melodious duet by Bhupinder & SJ.

YVSM, KAM's story with a bit difference in treatment has been evolved as "parthiban kanavu" (srikanth and sneha). Sneha in dual dole. Srik loves 1st sneha (modern type) but marries 2nd (homely type). Hopeless narration of 'how Srik misses to identify this difference before marriage'.

pOralE - excellent, didn't we discuss all the good songs of Swarnalatha sometime back, incl. this. Perfect song.
nandu - Kaise kahoon - sung by Bhupinder and SJ, lyric: PB Srinivas and music, of course, by IR. The song is here http://as01.coolgoose.com/go/song?id=59476
(Is this TFM or not :))
theEndrale is from kadavul amaitha mEdai. PBS's is straining himself. But, in later years, he sung, thOlvi nilaiyena ninaithaal, with ease.
We can't mention Kadavul amaitha mEdai without talking about "mayilE mayilE un thOgai engE" (SPB, Jency Antony).

Thinking over the situation of the song, as outlined by YVS Mani, i.e. a husband singing to his wife who is dumb, I think I can see why IR suddenly remembered PBS and called him to sing this song- he must have remembered MSV's 'Mounamae paarvayaai'- the soulful PBS song which Muthuraman sang to a dumb Vijayakumari in Kodimalar!

excellent song by
PBS thanks bb
KAM- shivakumar as post man & sumitra as teacher
a typical known story but the treatment was a little different
Of course mayile mayile un thogai enge scores above all(except for jency singing in her own style as she does everytime)
