bb- thanks for this awesome SJ song.
Ravindran and SJ have come up with some wonderful solos- the experimental'Kaalai poove nee vaa'- Hemavin Kathalargal-1985, the melodious 'Unakkagave naan' and the haunting 'Ezhisai geethame'(same song was sung by KJY too)-both ROR-1986,the outstanding 'Nalam paaduven'(what a song!)-Kannmaniye Pesu-1986 and the dreamy'Kathal Vennila'-Lakshmi Vandhachu-1986 are instances of this magical collaboration.

Saravanan
Ravindran seems to have regularly used Brindavana Saranga/Madhyamavathi and the staple Siva Ranjani in his Tamil ventures. But to his credit he has brought out some good tunes. To me ,he never got a chance to flex his muscles like HH Abdullah in Tamil.
Hemavin Kadhalargal -the one in which Anuradha played the heroine? Was it not by L Vaidyanathan?
Suresh
You know cricket existed before Rajinder Singh Goel(600+ wickets in Ranji) and Tennis existed before Enrico Piperno.Similarly TFM existed before 1976.

OISG- I don't know about the starcast of HK, but the record of the film credited the music to Ravindran.

Saravanan and OISG,
You two make only two other people I know who can acknowledge, let alone remember having watched the movie, "Hemavin Kaathalargal". Except for the BGM in this movie, everything else was first rate about the movie. Any more info you can give regarding this movie, such as director, other actors extra would be helpful. I remember a fabulous philosophical speech that Delhi Ganesh delivers in this movie. He and Anuradha are the only ones I remember from this movie.
Admin, I hope you will give us room to discuss this movie here, this is like a rare fossil discovery.

Udhaya, I'm sorry I haven't seen Hemavin Kathalargal. Around 8 years back, I found a record of the film in a music shop in Viruthunagar, and recorded the lovely 'Kaalai Poove Nee Vaa'. The cover of the record, I remember, had a rather abstract drawing of a woman.

My cousin came back and reported that the movie was good. When we went to the theatre the next day it had already gone!
Except for Anuradha and Delhi Ganesh the star cast did not have any known names.

OISG, couldn't resist a dig, could you? :)
I mentioned that pre-1975 in the context of TR's 'Nenjam Padum', never mind...
"Hemavin Kathalargal" was an early (2nd film) directorial venture of the now-acclaimed Malayalam film director T V Chandran whose films include the masterpiece (IMO) "Alicinde Anveshanam", "Ponthanmada" (mid 90's?), and Susanna of recent vintage. His last film, the Mammooty starrer "Danny" released this year to some good reviews.

Udhaya
T V Chandran, along with Shaji Karun (has done much lesser films than TVC), forms the notable duo of directors of the malayalam 'parallel' cinema movement post-80s. I have seen HK at an age when I couldn't fully appreciate the import of the film (i think 1984 was when it released, my debut year in college). Much later, I got to see most of his films, of which two - 'Alicinde Anveshanam'(late 90s) and 'Ormakalundaiyirikkanam' (mid 90) are remarkable IMO, though they did not win as many awards as some of his other films.
His last film "Danny" was a poignant, good film that restrained the usual hamming of Mammooty and was his first movie that moved away from a woman-centric theme. The earlier one 'Susanna' was fairly successful commercially too given the pre-release hype, but the forbidding presence of Vani Viswanath has somehow deterred me from seeing the film yet.
I haven't seen his debut 'Krishnankutty' (Mal) yet. How ironic, that much like the enigmatic and mercurial John Abraham (debut - Agraharathil Kazhuthai), T V Chandran too should venture early in the thamizh chandhai never to return?...

I'm sure you know about T V Chandran, pls. dont think I'm being presumptuous & judgemental in writing intro pieces on him. VeLLAi kodi in advance!
Rarely does one get to talk something of deep personal interest here, so the selfish me thought that for (the rare) uninitiated who might be interested in this digression, this bit of news could be of atleast 2cent value.. veRoru uLnOkkamum illai paraparamE :)

Thanks, everyone for the information.
Suresh,
Thanks for your indulgence, because all of that was news to me. I left India in '83 and only knew Thamizh movies from hearing about them or renting them occasionally. I picked up "HK" for its daring title and was pleasantly surprised. I've always hoped to see movies like "agrahaarathil Kazhuthai" and Bagyaraj's "Thaeneer" that never got commercial release.
Nice to meet fellow cineastes in an unlikely place. I apologize for causing this digression.

Anyone willing to dissect this song? The charanams appeal to me the most. The first interlude is just a medley bordering on cacophony, but the charanam is mind blowing!
"poovizhith thErinil oorvalam pOvOm

who is the lyricist?

I saw it back in '89 in D.C. rented from a place called Dana Bazaar. Really doubt whether you can find it anywhere now.

bb- Can you tell if the songs of ROR were all copies of Ravindran's Malayalam songs? I remember hearing the Malayalam original of'Paadi azahithen'. What about the other songs-
SJ's'Unakkagave'and VJ's 'Kaatrinile varum geetham'-do they also have Malayalam originals?
Suresh- thank you for giving so much info.
Udhaya- you have reminded me of a film which I had almost forgotten. Bhagyaraj's 'Theneer'. Ilangai Vaanoli used to play the songs almost every evening in late 1983. KJY's 'Unathey ilam maalai pozhuthu' still makes my heart skip a beat. JC-SJ's 'Ennavo Seithi'was another melodious duet. GA's wonderful score for a film that never came out of the cans!

Saravanan, i have no idea if the songs in rasigan oru rasigai were copies from malayalam.
Song of the Day: minnalE nee vandhadhEnadi from May maadham.

Saravanan, Udhaya
Thanks. Johnson has scored for many TV Chandran films, so my guess is HK is done by him. 'Theneer' was another rare album that got buried in the
sands of time.
I think Raveendran used just 2 songs from his 'Thenum Vayambum' in 'Rasigan oru rasigai'
1 'Thenum Vayambum' got remade as 'Paadi azhaithen', KJY singing both times ( I think there was a Vani J version of this song too in TV)
2 'Ezhu Swarangalum' was 'Ezhisai geethame'
Thenum Vayambum had 2 more wonderful songs - 'Otta kambi naatham' that must rank among KJY's top 10 and 'Manasoru kovil', a very Salil-like KJY solo
Ravindran is a wonderfully versatile composer; if you haven't heard yet, I recommend 'Enthinu veRoru sooryOdhayam' from 'Mazhayethum mumbe' as proof of his mastery over the contemporary+ethnic blend.
