Digression on CTHD:
I rememeber the scoffs Rajnikanth got for the movie 'Kodi Parakkuthu' when he exclaimed to his detractors in the movie 'paranthu paranthu adippen'. I'm sure we've seen him saying this in countless other movies. And true to his words he has been paranthu paranthu adichufying all his foes in movie after movie, for ages. And people give CTHD an oscar for the paranthu paranthu adichufying after all these years!
Mark my words, another Chinese movie is bound to get an academy award for a scene where the good triumphs over the evil, while evil vomits his mother's breast milk as he's so damn wounded. When that happens we know its hi-time to protest as our Superstar has been doing the 'naan adikra adi'la thaai paala kakkiduva' routine for quite some time now!
Yeah Shankar, I'm of course in Bangalore. I think a lot of ppl are in this forum, including Naga! My mail ID will be there in every message of mine!

CTHD was attempting to be a chinese martial arts matrix. while matrix was believable because of the story line, cthd was not. i mean they were stretching their idea too far into void. as it is, martial arts has become to seem and sound mechanical and trite and then to add to that, they made the fights in the air and on trees without a resonabl;e heritage for such things to happen. Matrix was more discplined in these type of fight scenes and had more reasoning behind those flying in the air fight scenes. i was not personally impressed by CTHD. it could have been more realistic with real Bruce Lee type martical arts and not the Jackie Chan variety using props.

rf,
why did u think matrix was more believable ? just cuz they put it in future and so we assume anything's possible in the future ? by the same token, why not assume same thing about some ancient chinese art where all those things might have been possible ? if u believe in our myths like ramayana and MB and enjoy all those flying and fire-spouting arrows, u shud also enjoy these I guess .. and these were executed much more realistically ....
I would say, there is probably a greater probability of doing difficult balancing acts than dodging bullets!! :))

you are missing a point. cthd doesn't try to be realistic! it is trying to be a 'magical realism' movie. somewhat like our puranas.
it is the reason why it got an oscar, imho. flying in air and floating on treas are not meant to be believed as such. what matters is the strangth of the sword and control of its master. in that it has succeeded very much.
karthik s! i really laughed!! in manithan rajini has really paranthu paranthu adichchaar!

mahabs!
u r correct this fantasy aspect is what i like best in the movies. The purpose of entertaintment for me is to create an imaginary world where unbeliavable things happen.
reality is over-emphasised too much. it should lend only normal logic to a movie but movie should not be like "the news".
one Q abt bgm. was it good because it was exotic (chineese) to us or wud a chinku guy find the music good. i have heard similar sounding music in some very old jackie chan movies (like "snake crane and monkey claws" or something...)
maybe in the phrase "they all look like " . "they" has much more to it than we imagine ( this is just a joke)

Bharath,
Pls do not call Chinese people 'Chinku'....Some of us take it in a derogatory sense. Learn to respect others' sentiments !

trend,
seriously I did not think of this! good point!
"duei bu chi" which means "ennai mannichudunga" in chineese.
but I think chinku's dont mean anything at all its just a short form or alias like desi.
all i know is its no derogatory.
i now know seinfeld was absolutely correct when he said. "havent we become to sensitive here". " arent we waiting for chances to hop on alleged allusions of prejudice" "whats wrong in asking a chineese man where a chineese restaurant is" "do i get freaked out when some one asks where israel is????!!!!"

Digression:
Thanks for taking it in the light sense with sensitivity. If someone asks me "Are you Indian?" that's fine. But if the question is "Are you Desi?"
then I'm at least supposed to be offended!
BTW, in the movie CTHD,I had fun ogling at Zhang Ziyi.

As far as I know, chinku and kallu are in the same vein and derogatory. Bharat, I remember atleast twice, I had to point out to you about insensitivities in your words. I guess this is some area where you really want to reconsider your views. And dont make a comedian as an idol for issues like political and social sensitivity.

chinku is derogatory. one of my professors once told us a story about how when he moved to the u.s. (when he was a 11 or 12), he thot that chinky was a nickname given "him" by his american friends and only much later in did he realize that they were making fun of him. it's one thing to call one's own group names (like indians calling other indians desi-s; black calling themselves nigga) and a totally different ball game to use names on others. another thing: crouching tiger hidden dragon has a lot to do with "culture". the same professor told me how he really enjoyed the movie. these are the kind of ambulimama stories that chinese kids grow up with. yo yo ma, the greatest living cellist, played for the bgm tracks (the title score, the credits and more). anyways, bharath, if you have problems "seeing" zhang ziyi's beauty, you are too old to do anything :-)) take it easy.

hihi
your words about ambulimama reminds my young ages. strangely, while watching that movie i remembered the 'mayajala kathaikal' written by vaandu mama and others. they were prevalent some twenty years back. they were much like today's pocket novels, but more enjoyable!
i am curious whether they are still available.

mahabs,
Do you still remember "Vandumama"? That's really great. He writes well. Do you remember Gokulam, Punthalir,Champak, Archies,Tinkle too? I vaguely remember "Punthalir" having a set of standard characters , one Aligator, one monkey, one Lion, one bear . I love "Suppandi" very much. So naive!!. Isn't he?
Guys, Please excuse me for posting this which is totally irrelevant to the context of this thread. But seeing mahabs mail, my hands gone out of my control.

why do i get the feeling that i have 2 generations of gap between me and the other df'ers.
in anycase i also get a feeling that i am addressing a nation and evry word is srutinized.
kiru I guess i really need change my views on this.( i.e saying these w.tr.to tfm).
if i were u, I will file me(the real me) under "it takes all to make this world" :-)
sabhai varamuraigal in 30 days course pogira mathiri irukku.
1 of u should go to TN assembly atleast 1'ce in ur life :-)
anyway guys my comments intended no harm. i hope u understand that atleast!
hihi:-)
my fav. was michelle yeoh. I think she competed for miss world with aishwarya rai and lost. but i remember seen her in a gift wrapper titled miss malasiya and she also acted in a bond flick(TND).
she is better than that "chinna ponnu"
lakshmanan are you talking abt "kalia the crow" that was the one that had kalia, doob doob, chamataka, i forgot the monkey and the bears name. apparently i remember the bear flinging doob doob by its tail and throwing it out.
kiru 1 more thing, seinfeld was voted as among the top 5 thinkers of this century by Time and he is more than just a comedian he makes lot of sense.
finally i should utter those immortal words which most people here will remember till they r 60 (which for some is just weeks away :-) )
"humor and levity are part of life" . chill guys !!! velaiyattukku thaan sonnen.
okay... so children i hope u got all the salient points i elucidated above regarding ARR's new releases. please revise it there will be an assignment tomorrow! :-)
