Topic started by RV (@ c660409-a.frmt1.sfba.home.com) on Wed Jul 19 01:57:27 EDT 2000.
All times in EST +10:30 for IST.
I got a 5 pack cassette from HMV recently from India. There are 74 songs in the pack and each song has a short introduction by MSV. TKR has a speech in the very beginning of cassette 1. MSV provides very nice insights into some of the songs.
I will try to post as many interesting intros as possible in this thread.

bandhulu apparently has acted in early tamil movies in the 30s & 40s (srs: makkal virumbi paartha thamizh thiraipadangal part 1). Even aayirathil oruvan was an ulta-fied version of black swan/captain blood (books by rafael sabatini that were made into films with tyrone power/errol flynn).

A fabulous thread, guys. One of the few threads where I feel younger than a few people.
In defense of "En Magan", it was one of Balaji's early movies with a god-awful storyline, very definitely a copy of a Hindi movie. This is one of those movies that had actresses like CID Sagunthala or Raja Sulochana singing club dance numbers, where the walls turn around to reveal an underground operation, where Sivaji wore Jiguna jackets, where the villain was addressed as boss. There were so many atrocities that VR were lucky to give even one good song.

instead of telling on what swaras songs are made MSV will allways talk about TitBits, because he is not the creator of this tunes. From 1951 to august 1951 the tunes and BGm were done by Great TKR.
It is TKR who took up challange with Kannadasan in 1957 for composing tune for lyrics written first & continued the trend afterward because he was thro' in carnatic swaras and thalam.
In january 1962 again accepted the challange of finishing songs composeing and BGM for picture NENJIR OOR ALLAYAM with Sridhar in reccord time of 18 days. In MallayittaMangai for song "Nan anri yarvaruvar " he trained Mrs AP KOMALA to sing first and asked "AMBI(TRM)" to follow same pitch, which was not his ushual pitch.I had an apporunity to talk to TRM in 1960 during Kavlaiillatha Manithan shooting when he mentioned about this &praised TKR for this songs sucess. He mentioned that TKR is very tallented MD in India & next to none.
The breakup of TKR-MSV was not due to TKR.Kannadasn & SRIDHAR were the culprits in 1963.

The claim that TKR is the sole creator of the MSV-TKR era tunes runs contrary to what Madurai GS Mani, a noted Carnatic vocalist and a one-time associate of MSV said in two recent interviews. He was all praise for MSV and reconted the countless hours he had spent with MSV while composing. The few songs he referred to were all
from the MSV-TKR era, all classical and he mentioned only MSV' name. Also, a music critic
in a TV interview said that no one has handled Hindustani ragas the way MSV has in TFM. This is not to detract from TKR's contribution but portray only TKR as well-versed in music and MSV as a tag along seems far-fetched.

It is amusing that the so called "tag along" produced magical tunes until the mid eighties, see the thread Yeithoa ninaivugal where several of MSV's fantastic tunes were discussed. I think it is all baloney, this questioning MSV's undeniable talent.

Chandru, you may be related to TKR, a sympathiser of underdogs or at the very best, a MSV hater. None of these are very good reasons for you to come up with your lop-sided ideas. Any discerning music lover would know that the 'MSV' songs of mid and the late 60s (post split-up) had the same style as the songs created during the MSV-TKR era. The difference was in 'sound control', TKR is known to tone down MSV's tendency to go overboard with sounds during his moments of uncontrolled passion (sounds suggestive, eh ?:). You quoted 'nAnandri yAr varuvAr', right ? It is set to Abhogi with a grihabedam in the charanam that takes it to Valaji. There are scores of MSV songs in both of these raagas but as far as I know, not even a single song by TKR. So, in all probabilities, it is a MSV creation.
My arguments are not aimed at tainting TKR's musical abilities but only counter a mischief maker who has set out to distort history.

Well said Sriram Lakshman. It is an atrocity to question MSV's place in the pantheon of TFM greats.
