Here is my review of "Friends" IR's latest Malayalam album.
Over all comments: Very good work by IR, same standars of "Yathramozhi" or "Anthapuram".With out much of recycling tunes, there are four pleasing numbers.
1.Thnga kina pongal by KJY & Chitha
One of the best song of the album , and best song of IR in recent times.Excellant beats , very good second interlude and real IR stuff is there. You will be hooked on to this song right from your first hearing.
2.Ponnaram Poovilum by Chithra
Again very good number with all IR natural flow of instruments and very good voice of Chitra. This song reminds me IR's other malayalam song "Kiliye Kiliye",if you like the later song you should be liking this one too.
3.Kadal Katril , one version by KJY and one version by Sujatha
Again I have to say very good number. KJY at his best and equally is Sujatha. The way sujatha sings this song makes you feel her voice is as sweet as the flute.Melifluous song with nice beats.
4.Shiva malli poove by Chithra
The reason I said, the first song is one of the best song in the album is the other best song is this one. This is a great work by IR , listen just from the starting piece, the humming part reminds you IR's songs in eighties ,Infact as I mentioned earlier the first two lines reminds you IR's old number "Poovaadai Katru" . Don't miss this one.Hats of to IR for his music and Chithra for her great singing.
There are couple of bit songs by MG.Sree Kumar and one dancing number which are just good enough to complete this album.
Foot Note: Must by album in my opinion, I also believe one of the two reasons attribute IR's better work in Malayalam album as compared to his Tamil work.
1. As mentioned by some one, malayalam movies inspire him much better.
2. The popularity of the album, the same album if produced in tamil (dubbed) I don't know how may are going to buy it, as tamil field expects altogher different songs now a days with lots of synthasizers and jazzy stuff. I think if most of us ready to accept IR in Eighties ,even today we should be able to get the best from him .

Thanks Suresh for the detailed review. Waiting eagerly to get hold of the album. Is it a new movie? who is the director?
[MSK ippadi kaaya vidareengaLE?:-)]
Listened to nilavE mugam kAttu:
Thendralai kaNdu koLLa and thannanthaniare excellent. Especially the the rich intro and
the pathos filled music in thannanthani is a rarity in todays songs. chittu parakkuththu
is a nice fun song. Rest of the songs sound mediocre.

G Suresh,
You are right about why IRs malayalam compositions are good. I think IR has a particular style, but the present tamil taste wants something other than this. Probably they are used to listening to too much of IR. They need a change. I am not saying IR is boring. Just that people have a novelty-seeking character to them. But I think the TFM fans should get over this fascination with synth keyboard music.
IR should just stick to natural instruments but improve the recording techniques/instruments.

Some info about the movie 'Friends'
It is a superhit!. I am happy because so many of IR's films are flopping. It is a comedy film, with the starcast of Jayaram and DivyaUnni. No mention of the music though.

I read in a homepage. This guy takes news from popular Malayalam magazines and types it in his page too, I suppose. Some other news were about Shalini singing, Mammooty's tour and Lal's new movie....etc

`Friends' has run @ 4 shows for 50 days and continuing at Palakkad, a small town at Kerala. If you compare 1:1, this is something better a silver jubilee in Madras. That Mammootty or Mohanlal is not around in this film is another reason to believe it's a superhit. (Long since I could visit theatres -to judge myself; no time)

Here is my review on kAkkai Chiraginilae...
First, this album is absolutely different from the recent "Synth" stuff from IR. Particularly except for one song, all the other playback singers are SPB, Mano, Chitra & Sandya. Now on the songs
1. kOlakkiliyae ... SPB - Can you all recall old SPB-IR combo with SPB's magic voice? This is one such a song. Ilamai thullum paadal.
2. Gayatri kaetkum... UK, Bhava This is the I refered earlier. This is a nice duet. I would have loved this more if the singers were SPB, SJ. Yet a refreshing duet!!!
3. paadith thirintha....I can rate this song as the best of the album and this is, IMO, equivalent to any of old SPB's solo (like Idayakovil, theertha karaiyinilae etc)
4. nenavu therinja...Mano, Chitra Think of any good song of this combo. This song is no way less than to them. A rustic duet and a lovely one.
5. oranjaaram... SPB and excellent solo by SPB. The song is excellent except for the Lyrics! If you can bear all the english words used in the song, then you will like it definitely.
6. Oor ooraa - sandhya I never even imagined that Sandhya can be an alternative to P.Suseela in modern days. Yes, this is similar to one such a IR-PS solo pathos song. I will rate this equivalent to the other SPB solo.
7. Paadith thirintha....IR As usual IR has repeated the best solo of the album with his voice. Had the earlier version been sung by HH, I would have opted this song as the best. But, well, It is SPB!!!!
So fans, you will never get disappointed with this album as songs have the old touch rather than the Synth stuff. Grab it soon.,
