Fresh from viewing "yathramozhi" in malayalam..
I heard YM songs more than a year ago, in fact i bought the cassette in a kochi shop just on hearing the oprning notes of "thaimaavin" even before realising it was IR's music.
enough has been said about the album in TFM, i'm disappointed to hear -ve reviews about uravugal. maybe new singers or recording or whatever, but i'm sure you'll appreciate the music if you give it a few more hearings.
well, the BGM for the movie is another story. it's simply marvellous with a theme music handled in about 20 diff. ways to suit the mood of the scenes. it's just so good, that i bet that even our popular Tamil press will condescend to acknowledge it if ever "Uravugal" is released in TN.

I shoul not be putting this here, but I cudn't find a better place to give this.....
(Mr.madhan (Goa) called me up now and told this info, since he doesn't have a m/c at home)
This years limca book of record has a foto of Raja and has quted that he's the first Indian ever to compose a symphony and .........(read this carefully)his symphony no1 named "fantasia" was released in England in 1993 and in Dec '97 they have released his symphony no2 (not yet named) again ,in england.
The thing which is worth mentioning here is that "fantasia" seems to have 11 movements (beethoven's longest symphony had 8 movements) and I heard it's not an easy thing to have so many movements in a single composition (honestly ,I don't know what a movement is Mr.madan explained to me that in layman's terms)
"fantasia" has taken 1 month to compose and the second one was completed ni just 16 days.
Fantasia was released by pyramid audio.
I have mailed the person who is the editor of
Limca book of records regarding this.
For all those who don't believe whatever I have said above, please go and check the 98's Limca book of records.
U can also mail this person regarding this.

What are u saying by "released in England in 93"? Is there a possibility that we can get hold of the
casette somewhere in England. Give us more info as
to whether we have access to the casettes or not.
People in England- can you get some more info

Vijay and I searched through the web using altavista, infoseek, looksmart etc.. search engines..did considerable work to see if we can get some info on IR and symphony after reding Shankar's posting but ended with nothing. Hence we request Shankar to present finer details.

i spent half the night searchin the web for some info.even the royal philharmonic's site din't have anything on it.the news about the second one is more confounding though i have heard from a friend of mine who is paly with KR that IR was busy with the second symphony for sometime and that along with a health problem was the reason for him not takin many assignments in between.at that time,he couldnt find time even for re-rec for kamal's kurudhipunal though the trailers had IR's name for music.he also missed some of kamal's films later which was unusual.but i din't expect to hear that the second one was 'released' when we din't know about the fate with the first one.also, there could be a mistake with limca book because,in an interview some five months back in vikatan, IR stated that things are not in his hands regarding the release of the first symphony.

I'm also as excited as u are.I'm eagerly awaiting reply from Mr.ghose (whose email id i had given earlier).
I request u guys to send him mails asking for this.
He might respond if he gets more queries on the same topic. I sent a mail yesterday. I haven't got any response till this moment.
I guess ( & hope)the book is authentic.
I'll be going to higgin bothams tonight and let u know more on this.
Meanwhile junta in england can enquire about this with pyramid audio as the book claims pyramid audio to have released "fantasia"

Guys,
I went to Higgin Bothams (MG rd) along with Mr. sankaran .
There were a few lines describing raja's work with RPHO and about his films.
It claims that the symphony no-1 named "symphonic fantasy" (it's NOT fantasia) was released along with symphony no-2 in 1997.
Refer pg 93 of Limca book of records 1998.

Guys,
I am writing this after listening to MVU and PVK songs n times the last 2 days !
There are a few songs that are really really good !! " Though Ilavenirkaala panchami is catchy, I liked "koottu kuyil" and Etho Etho !! better .
Also this "Ilya nileve Ilaya nilave " song is killing !! This sounds like the "Velli nilave " song in nandhavana theru..
For those who like IR's voice , Nandhavana kuyile in PVK is a treat !! Especially the following lines !
"..nadanthathellam kanavuthaan , kanuvukku nee aen varunthukirai.?
Uthirnthathellaam saruguthaan , vasanthamagal aen Aluthaai.?? ..
Cheers
MSK
PS: IR seems to be on a roll .. only concern is both these movies will go to trash..and so will be the case with the songs !!
Has MVU movie been released.?

I'm totally disappointed with IR's work in Desiya Geetham. Both Songs and Rerecording was not good.
Only few directors could get good stuff from Raja either they have to be as I level Direcors or Raja's favourites/Devotees.Cheran didn't fall into either of the categories.
Though this film has good scope for Re-Recording Score. Especially Kidnapping the CM from his guest house, it has twenty minutes of no dialogues. This scene is the main Theme of the story. But Raja didn't bring any special attention from his music.
Regarding Songs, None of them are catchy, moreover lot of them are frustrating, (Bit Songs by Raja himself and Pushpavam Kandasamy).
Raja thanakku othu varadha modern tunes inimel try pannamal vittu viduvadhu nalladhu. Ramba Song sagikkavillai. Lyrics ondru kooda puriyavillai, Interlude'l Guitar vaithu thadavi irrukkiraar.
Adhu Raja pala murai use panniya tunegalaiyum trashl poda vendum. Eg., Naan Vaakkappatu Song. Padam Aarambithu 10 Nimidathi indha paadal varuvadhal thookkam vara aarambithu vidugiradhu.

MSK,
When I first listened to MVU, other than iLavEnirkAla panchami , the other songs
didnt impress me. On further listening, kUttu kuyil, yEtho have grown on me like anything.
iLaiya nilavE is easily one of the recent best from IR with excellent interludes
as also nandavanakkuyilE.
But wait till you listen to kAdhal kavidhai. Very different style and variety
in songs. I am hooked to it. Thalaivar summa poondu viLayAdirukkAr:-)
Has KK movie been released?

Everybody is saying KK Recording quality is so poor. I have read somewhere Raja went to London with his team for this film recording. Still it is poor? If still IR didn't want to give us quality recording as ARR giving from his Kodambakkam Studio, he can't get good recognition of his work.

Hi,
MSK,
PVK also has nandhavana kuyile sung by HH. I first heard it and then the IR's version. When I hear it in the car I immediately switch to the other side where IR's version starts.
Just for en kanvinai kel nanba and naan vakkapattu songs alone in Desiya geetham I will buy the CD. En Kanavinai is a masterpiece from IR in recent times.

Sangeetha:
Maybe the picturisation of the songs in DG left you disappointed, but I personally felt that there were 3 good scores - en kanavinai, naan vakkapattu, and desiya geetham. Esp. the "Naan Vakkappattu" song may sound innocously similar to past IR scores, but if you listen to it carefully it tells a story on its own. I haven't seen the movie as yet, but just by the song I can guess the storyline of the character. Esp. the interludes in that song are excellent. I think we're all so spoiled by the technology in present-day songs that we expect even a rustic song to be packaged fancifully (ex.karuthamma). Not to take away anything from karuthamma's songs but they can only be an exception. As a MD faithful to the story setting and theme, IR must have given Cheran what he wanted. Can't comment on the BG though.
You have seconded a familiar accusation that IR gives his best for level 1 directors or his cronies, which I can't just accept. How many MD's have made as many superhits for debutant/ level 2,3...directors/ banners? TF history is replete with such milestones.
IMO, our impatience due to the age of the short sound bites is a reason why we expect instant gratification from songs. That's why so many recent hits start with a strong opening punch that grab your attention but lose track in the middle. I personally feel naan vakkappattu song is a classic example of a number that grows on you and is a real musical gem. I would go further than Mukund in stating that I bought the CD for just this number. Of course, this is my pers.opinion:)

I love nAn vAkkappattu and en kanavinal kEL naNba.
Also, the pushpavanam Kanadasamy songs are well composed for the situations. IR's BGM in DG is
not disappointing. There is a flute piece before
nAn vAkkapattu, that is scintillating. He has brought out the sombre mood of the movie in his music.
I bought KK CD and the recording quality is not
definitely poor.
