We have very few famous Tamil singers in Tamil Film Industy from Thiyagaraja Bhagavathar time.
TMS (his mother tongue is Sowrashtra),PB Srinivas (Kannada).
Balamuralikrishna, SPB, Janaki, Susheela, SP Sailaja, Mano, Devan (Telugu).
KJ Yesudas, Jeyachandran, Chitra, Unnikrishnan, Unnimenon, Jency,Swarnalatha, Minmini,Sujatha, Chinmayi, Chitra Sivaraman (Tenali) - Malayalam.
(I may miss some names)
Atleast this time we have some Tamilsingers Hariharan, Shankar Mahadevan, Karthik, Tippu, Harini, Srinivas,Harish Ragavendra etc.
What is the reason for other language singers dominating the Tamil film Industy. It is not so in Telugu or Malayalam film Industy. (Of course Hindi it is very difficult to predict who is from where).
Atleast now there are some Tamil singers. Will it continue ?

TMS is a sourastrian. But he brought up in Madurai. Sourastras are mainly living in Madurai, Paramakudi and Kumbakonam. They all came to tamil nadu 400 years back. You can count them us Tamilians

Let the ignorant tamils with inferiority complex in their blood suckk upto the north indians for no reason and get lost and die.because they dont realise that other language people are eating away their bread and butter.Unless there is self realisation nothing can change them.

Why is that the Tamil singers like to marry overseas girls not in their country. For example Harish Ragavendra. Doesn't it sound silly, They feels happy to marry them.

On one side we have several Tamil scholars fighting for "Classical Language" status for Tamil.
http://www.vikatan.com/jv/2003/aug/27082003/jv0602.shtml
On another side we have Tamil software engineers and linguists adding a fourth Tamil called "aRiviyal thamizh" to the longliving "muththamiz".
http://www.dinakaran.com/daily/2003/Aug/23/general/GeneNews10.html
And then we have TFM personalities who have in the past few decades succesfully degraded and ruined the livelihoods of Tamil singers, Tamil musicians and have turned Tamil language into "kuppai thamizh". There is a very large group of rasikargal who are more than ready to lap it all up. Wow! What a contribution!

Hi,
I have an observation to make. Tall Tamil singers like the incomparable MSS, DKP, MLV and even NCV chose to concentrate on classical music rather than film background music. Even the current lot like Sudha Raghunathan, Bombay Jayashree, Nityashree etc are not pursuing a career in TFM, perhaps feeling that it's not enough. That's the reason for the dearth of Tamil singers in TFM. And as someone has commented TMS is a pucca Tamilian having been brought up in a community that had long ago migrated to the Tamil Land from Saurashtra.

Srinivas is from Trivandrum.. a Malayalee. Early in the 1980s, he used to be part of an orchestra in TVM called 'Blue Birds' with KS Chitra, G Venugopal etc.
Also, I don't merit to this discussion. Music has no language .. what if some singers were Tamilian by birth, others were from Kerala, Hyderabad etc. Together, they all enrich music

I agree with S Ramaswamy, don't put boundries on music. I enjoy diversity, although I prefer not to hear any tamilish (combination of tamil and english) in songs. If a singer wants to sing in a different language, thats fine but sing the whole song in that language.
I am ashamed by tamil people, who complain about how other cultures are eroding tamil culture. If it wasn't for other cultures, I would not have realized the ignorance of tamil people. (Example caste system, star charts, crazy religious beliefs, and stupid customs).
I am proud to call myself Tamil, but unlike most Tamil people I know what being Tamil really means

But do people take pride and stand by their language? Do they know enough about its riches to fight for it longevity? Do they flinch when they hear zhas masticated (zha illamal "tamizh" undo?)
That's something we can only answer for ourselves - one person at a time.

The whole argument is based on a wrong premise, at least where malayalam film music (MFM)is concerned. In MFM the most popular female singers have come from outside for 4 decades, until Chitra came along. even when P Leela was going very strong in Telugu, the MFM was completely dominated by P Susheela, Jikki and Janaki, and then V Jayaram. Before KJY came along, the most popular singer was AM Raja, and PBS was also very popular. Incidentally, almost all the actresses in MFs were from Andhra/TN (except SHEELA/JBHARATI).
So, i think there in cross-over into the other side, in all the four SI languages. And, this was/is a good rather than bad thing. As an aside, i have never read/seen anybody agonising about the domination of SJ/PS in MFM, because, you see, they were there by merit.
.
by the way the new true-blood tamil singers (karthik/shanker mah/tippu etc.. etc..) over whom ther's a lot of wide-eyed admiration, are not a patch on the non-tamilians (KJJ/SPB/TMS)who gave us heavenly melodies in TFM. probably these newcomers will improve and prove themselves.. i dont know.
.
cheerio..

PB Srinivas is telugu...anyway...music is above language..even then same is the case with every south indian language even we telugu ppl feel bad abt not listening to chaste telugu in songs...P.Suseela is irreplaceable...so is SPB...!Many do not know abt this great singer called Ghantasala Venkateswara Rao....all are gifts to music from every place...but one thing may be there are less singers who are tamizh but for a true singer it is the tamil audience that counts...an audiens that enjoys and essentially understands music.

I agree with Anirudh to certain extent that music is above language. But I cant stand people (whatever language they sing in) killing the language in the song. I think in the past - almost all the singer - inspite of having different languages as their mother tongues were perfect in their diction! I think that is what matters.

I agree that someone who cant grip the language fluently shouldnt be allowed to sing film music, as lyrics form an important part of it. But i think KJJ, KSC, SPB, JC have done an excellent job in Tamil. Similarly, SJ, PS, PBS have given excellent songs in Malayalam. So, one shouldnt care where he is from, but only should care whether he is capable of handling the language. Thats why, being a malayali myself, im a great fan of Ilayaraja and i hear all good songs of Tamil, Telugu and Kannada.

I completely agree with IR_Fan_From_Kerala. It is not the non-tamilian singers that are the problem, it is that ones who murder the language. If you are going to make your livelyhood in another state then you should make the effort to learn the language at the very least.

I would like to have some information on Tamil film playback singer of the 1980s by the name of "JENCY". As far as I know her professional plyback singing career began in 1978 and ended sometime in 1981 and during this period she has sung extensively for "ILLAYARAJA".
I should be grateful to have some more information on this playcabk singer.
Regards

Samuel, there is an article (interview) on Jency in one of the editions of Anandavikatan of this month (Nov). She opted off from playback singing since she got married and had to bring up her 2 children. Now that they are grown up, she says she would like to sing again but says she is 'scared' to meet IR again as he had advised her to stay back when she decided to quit. She said off all the new singers, she like Chithra the best and considers her like her own daughter. She also likes Sadhna Sargam.
