Rediff's critic while pointing out lapses, has also point out the good features. To all those criticizing the critic, have you seen the movie?
I don't know whether Kamal or romantic scenes would have been appropriate in Bharathi but I think even now in Tamil cinema Kamal is unmatched in romantic scenes (irrespective of his kisses).

Kamal might be unmatched in romantic scenes but the point whether such scenes are relevant to the movie Bharathi.

Kamal would have spoiled the Bharthy character with his "Adi Thondai" voice, over acting and macho gymnasism. The only other alternative to Shinde would have been a young "Sivaji Ganesan" (remembering his role in "Kaikodutha Deivam" singing the "Sindhu Nadiyen Mesai Nellavinelle...")

I dont know why people always compare between persons. This wrong way of criticsm.
Mr Shinde's acting is solid he is no way less to Kamal. We want to see only Bharathi and not kamals acting gymnasium because u will start identifying kamal in that charachter instead of Bharathi thats also explains why the director went in for lesser known artist. Because here we are glued to Bharathi and not shinde the actor. Now thats what we call performance,if have some celebrity like overacting Kamal we will see only kamal and never get identified with Bharati.
Ofcourse there are few exception where we identify with the charachter instead the actor behind it example MohanLal in his recent movie depicting as a Kathakali Artist..
Now my objective is not start another words war on this but expressing my views thats all..

I bought the bArathi CD @Shrimati's in Berkeley, CA. Well..as soon as I got home I was glued to my couch till I heard all the songs and some of them more than once. Yes, some of the songs are vintage IR style ..but there are lots of embellishments and fresh ideas in percussion accompaniment.
mayil pOla song is the only one in colloquial tamil. I dont know why they did this.
akkini kunju song orchestration sounds like pancha vAdhyam.
bhArata samudayam starts with a kummi, march style drum beats with indian drums (watch out for the tabla) and progresses to a full fledged Western classical interlude with full brass..I thougth YesudAs sounded weak in the higher octaves.
vandhE mataram is like the Hey Ram song..an indianised march song..with thavil and violin accompaniment. I liked this best.
nalladhOr veenai song has a nice sonic backdrop. I think this is new in rAja's orchestration.
ethilum ingu - this is a nice song for singing..very classical sounding (any rAgam ?). This is another songs I liked very much.
kElada - rAjkumar bharathy sings with a different voice modulation. Sounds majestic.
niRpadhuve - this is a nice melody with the simplest of orchestration. This is probably the one people find it bland. My wife thinks the singer has a malayalam accent but it was okay with me.
ninnai charan - very nice song. I liked both Bombay Jayashri and rAja's versions. I am fan rAja's singing..he puts in the right amount of stress at the right place and the right amount of emotion. Involves himself in it.
I recommend buying the CD..you will hear more details. None of the instruments sound dominating or over powering or harsh ..Very well balanced, I think. All are acoustic instruments..I suspect the flute is not. Overall the quality of recording is good and I was able to enjoy the music thoroughly..

Is vande maatarm set in hindolam? i couldnt avoid remembering shades of 'punjai undu nanjai undu' from unnaal mudiyum thambi when i heard the song.

Vijay,
I think you are right. Vandemataram is in hindolam. If possible, try to just hear the Violin piece which comes along the song. Its amazing.

IR_Adimai,
I bought bharathi cd a month ago and couldn't stop noticing the violin piece in vandemataram from my first hearing. It comes only in pallavi, i wish Raaja had included it in charanams too, but it's really amazing stuff.

I have never seen such a great review from hindu. They just gave some OK review for Dhalapathi itslef.
IR is back in business and we r delighted about that.

Vem,
Hindu has 2 reviewers. D.Ramanujam and Malathi Rangarajan. Malathi always writes good about IR's music, while D.Ramanujam does not do that.
Anyway hindu's comments do not prove that IR is
back or not.

vijay,
if i am right, punjai undu was in sudhdha dhanyasi ( not pure, as the scene later in the movie shows gemini saying asudhdha dhanyasi...)
i think the charanam of "naan thanga rojaa" (TIME) is in hindolam... a friend who is a classical singer told me that actually there is shrutibhedam in this song from mohanam (pallavi) to hindolam (charanam)... can somebody confirm?

hari u are right about punjai undu. its in sudha dhanyaasi. But for some reason or the other the interludes in vandhe maataram reminded me of the interludes in punjai undu and so i got confused on the raga. i'll have to listen to the pieces again. thanx for notifying anyway.

Vem & Rem : Ilayavan is reviewed by SR Ashok kumar in `The Hindu' who perhaps decided to do a review of the audio also, mentioning each of the tracks:-)

Guys,
Atlast ,got my Bharathi cd thru a website and started listening to it.
I simply don't have words to describe my feelings for the songs.
Since, a generic review has already be done by many, i'm not going to do that. but, if all the songs are closely observed, it would be evident that in most of the songs, each stanza has a different starting tune.
For e.g., in Nirpathuve, the first stanza starting with 'Vanagame..' set a tune and the second stanza starting set to a different tune.
Similarly, in 'Kelada..', it's the same case.
It's a surprising a news from Vikatan that, in this song, the lyrics are collected from different poems and then combined into a single song.
(I don't know, whether someone else has tried this kind of experiment).
In the song 'Ninnai Charan' IR has gone one step ahead and all the three stanzas are set to different tunes.
Also, most of the songs have a different kind of beat patterns in the first and second interludes.
I think, IR has done so many things in most of the songs that it will take repeated listenings to observe all his work.
Simply marvellous.
For example, in the song, 'Ethilum', a superb violin piece joins Madhu after he completes the first line. This, we can find only after the first stanze is over.
There are many more observations. but, i don't remember all of them. so far, i may've heard about 10 times only. will come up with more observations after several more listenings.
I really appreciate if others also come up with more observations.
thanx
Sridhar.
