Hi! I am Pinchi Chandil, another addict of Ilaiyaraaja's music, as my brother Pinchi Srinivasan. I am thrilled to see this forum, dedicated for the Maestro. Here is a small contribution from me for the instrumentals. Songs from the movie, Jhony..
Kaatril endhan geedham... kaanadha onrai thedudhe.. and from the movie, Alaigazh Oyvadhillai, Kaadhal oviyam... padum kaaviyam.. then sindhum poonjolai...

Hi I am Bharath, a staunch fan of the great Maestro. I have always felt that most of Raja's compositions make fantastic candidates for instrumentals. Though not very much conversant with Classical/Carnatic music, i turn to ilayaraja's compositions for the amount of peace of mind his lilting tunes give.
My Choices for the instrumentals would be
Nam Dhana Nam Dhana Thaalam Varum, Phudhu bhaavam varum.....(I just know that this song is from one of Bagyaraj's films, i do not know the name).
Senthaazham poovil vandhaadum thendral yennmeedhu modhudhamma..... from the film Mullum Malarum is another all time favourite of mine.

Excellent topic, R. Ravi! Bharat, thanks for resuscitating a great topic worth pondering. I especially like R.Ravi's idea of trying to come up with appropriate instruments to justify the song as an instrumental.
My instant choices are:
Ilampaniththuli vizhum naeram-from Aaraadhanai. As for instruments, IR uses exquisite arrangements in this song that I wouldn't mess with it much. Just take out the singing and let IR expand on the interludes already there in the song. If I were to pick an instrument to sub for the vocals, I would pick the Cello. But in the hands of a master interpreter, a tenor saxophone would also be an amazing treat.
Everything I said above also applies to "Oru Kungumachchengamalam" from the same movie.
Other candidates:
--vizhi oaraththu kanavum from "RaajaPaarvai". Use Violins and tabla to expand on the already rich interludes.
--mazhai varuvathu mayilukku theriyum from "Rishimoolam". Use someone like Hariprasad Chaurashia to go nuts with his flute on this fast number. I would also use mirudhangam as the main percussion counterpart.
--all songs from "Metti". Build on the fertile mood already established in the songs. A combination of string instruments would be magical.
--en iniya pon nilavae from "Moodupani". A perfect song to be rendered by a tenor saxophone. I wish John Coltrane could come back to life just to play this song.
Come to think of it, most bass-heavy IR tunes by KJY will sound great as tenor sax instrumentals. I will stop here for now so as to not monopolize this thread. But I will be back for sure. I can't wait to see what others will post here.

the topic is very good.
The guru of music IR is a born genious.I have gone to a carnatic music presentation by IR When i was in Madras. There he had sung some carnatic songs with V.V.Subramanian accompanied in violin.
after the Program V.V.S played in violin a song from kaligan "Enthan Nengil" which was sung by K.J.Y.in the film
Execellent music.
V.V.S was accompanied by KR on keyboard.
excellent! Excellent!!
Hats Of IR. My salute to IR.
Great!Great!!Great!!!

--Janani janani from "Thai Mugaambigai" would be great if done by a string ensemble.
--Ilaya Nila from "Payanangal Mudivathillai" could be expanded as a classic duo by guitar and flute.

Hey Udhaya....your posting was great.Bharat do pouyr in your thoughts. and venkat...hope i had a chance like you to see the maestro perdform.
Coming to the topic i think songs woth sharp notes better qualify as intrumentals(Obviously the western type).Hence how bout the song..."Sandha Kavigal paadidum.." from the movie "Metti" sung by Brhamanandam.Though a classical song it could easily be converted into a western classical with the solo violin taking o the melody and the accompaniemt .....well it doesnt need to be changed coz Raja did a wonderful job.

Here are some more possibilties that would be amazing to hear:
-"Madhana Moga Roopa Sundhari" from Indru Poi Naalai Vaa done by a solo Nadhaswaram
-"Vaanaththu Thaaragaiyo" from Poonththoattam by a south Indian flute player like Maali or Ramani (I make this distinction to differentiate the south's thicker sound from the breathless pace and lighter sound of the north Indian style ala Chaurasia. I love both sounds by the way.)
-"Manidha Manidha" should be elaborated by IR and an orchestra into a war symphony
more later...

R Ravi you have started a very good topic. This weekend I was listening to Yanni and IR (Nothing but Wind) back to back. I feel IRs music FLOWS gently and fluently. But I feel the recording on the CD is not state-of-the-art. So we guys here should do something constructively. Why dont we write to Ilayaraja and ask him to record an instrumental album ? Ideally I would like him to record directly on digital tapes and transfer to CDs.
We can assure him we will carry on a vigorous campaign on the net to sell those CDs. Or we can collect money and pay him before hand. I am sure we can easily get 1000 people.
(Personally, I think he should be doing only instrumentals now on. He has outgrown lyrics I feel !!)
Earlier I had written to RPG Music to bring IR music in their Revival collection. The Revival collection is supposed to be digitally mastered version of old songs.
I think Ilayaraja should re-record his 80's music again in digital format again. If he makes a 10-CD collection with high quality recording I would surely buy at any price.
So lets get into action. Somebody please tell me who holds the copyrights of IR music. Is it the movie producer or IRs company (echo ?). If I can buy the copyrights I can re-release the songs after digitally re-mastering them.
Regards,
- kiruba

first of all, a very good topic, provoking imagination.
sridevi en vaazhvil from ilamai kalam in nadhaswaram. hindolam would sound very good in nadhaswaram.
thenaruviyil nanaindhidum malaro - sax
chinnakannan azhaikiran - "
poomalai vaangivandhan - violin. this would merge beautifully with the violin interludes of the song.
ennule ennulle - combo of vioilns and sax.
poovil vandu koodum - veena. i was very impressed with the veena piece coming in the beginning of the song.the first line of the song is played in veena.
ilaya nila- the whole song on guitar supported with some other instrument. truly a challenge for anyone!

"Engengo Sellum..en Yenangal..." is a excellent song from instrumentalisation. The main tune can be played by a violin section/sax.the saranam part has a sort of echo effect....thats the trademark of this song. Its creativity at its best.

Is "Engengo Sellum..en Yenangal..." (from abOOrva sagOdharigaL, IFRC) by IR? Sounds very unlike him!

It is really heartening to note we have a lot of IR fans bubbling with zeal to convert the songs to fully instrumental music. I will also like to join the club and place before you a few words about my views.
Once IR was asked reveal the song which had extracted so much from him and he is supposed to have named "Mandram Vandha Thendralukku". This song I believe is one of the most wonderful to be turned fully instrumental by the Sax. I wish KennyG accepts this offer and pairs up with Raja to give us this dream venture.
The song's first humming if can be replaced by the sax with an orchestration equivalent to that of "Aruna Kirana Deepam" of Guru -- oh! what joy it is bound to create. I wish many of the IR songs be turned instrumental by using the set of instruments used for "GURU" or atleast "Ennulay Ennullay". The violins are smooth and flowing. I basically feel that "Mandram Vandha" lacks violins in the BGM and with violins in the first interlude it can be a more admirable one.
