Dear fans,
It is some time since we really got into seeing more into songs of IR rather than compare him with ARR and so on. Have you ever noticed that all Hits of IR has that chorus ( a group of 10-15 girls) at the BG, humming some great melodies in the songs and in the process adding value to the song. I just can tell you only this- there are less of IR's songs WITHOUT chorus. Plz. post your comments.
For a start, let me give a list of 4 great songs with chorus..
1. Vaa vennilaa--mella thirandhadhu kadhavu
2. Oru naalum unnai -- ejamaan
3. adi aathaadi -- kadalora kavithaigal
4. Chinna chinna vannakkuyi-- Mouna Ragam ( the sensational.. ummmmmm, ummmmm)
Bye,
Sharma.

'Pani vizhum iravu' had a lovely chorus piece in the prelude and in the interlude as well. Even a folkish number like 'Ooru vittu orru vanthu' sung bu MV had very good chorus pieces that gave a lift to the song.

How could anyone forget "raajathi raaja" in Agninakshatiram? Or "Pudhu Maapilaikku" in the Kamal-as-dwarf movie (couldn't recall the name off-hand).

SR Kaushik,
I think the song you're talking about from 'Maya Bazaar95' is "Adada Intha Azhagana Pulli Maane, Pulli Maane...."

Re: IR and Opera type chorus.
IR's chorus is pretty much inspired by WCM. But he does not 'shop' like ARR all over the world. IR has learnt WCM, formed an idea in his mind and goes about composing in his own style/format. Because he has understood the fundamentals very well, he can keep churning out various songs using the same formula but still sound different. Whereas, ARR always has to keep looking for different culture/genre of music for each of his assignement to get that novel touch. In ARR's case, novelty is not a new sequence/harmony of notes but totally a new genre blended with Indian melodies.
This is my understanding of how these guys work.

IR Chorus in Veera "Malai Kovil Vasalil" Has an excellent Chorus peice. Since there are two threads(Not a java programmer) of Chorus going at the same time. One whose tone goes down at the end of first line and going up on second, other vice-versa. Your comments

ShrikanthG: Good point, Raja thinks a lot while composing his chorus, take for example the chorus that is placed as counter points in Keladi Kannmanni (pudhu pudhu artangal)...awesome.

It's surprising no one has listed `KAdhal Ovium' in Alaigal Oyvathillai! That song has an excellent chorus prelude that follows the Sanskrit chants! Same song has some nice `fairy tale' style chorus in the interludes as well!

Has anyone noticed that Raja has stopped using the `westernised style of chorus singing (female)' after, say, 1983 or so? (By this I mean singing keeping the mouth in a `O'val shape, `laa' will be `loa'):-)
The contrasting examples are:
`Westernised':
-1st interlude of `en iniya pon nilAve'
-Prelude of `andhimazhai pozhikiradhu'
-2nd interlude of `madai thirandhu'
-prelude & 2nd interlude of `kAdhal Ovium, pAdum kAvium'
-title & climax BGM of Tik^3
`Indianised'
-Prelude of `RAman AndAlum, RAvanan AndAlum'
-2nd interlude of `thenpAndiththamizhe'
-2nd interlude of `Madhura marikkozhundhu vAsam'
etc.
-The chorus singing `muthu muthu chudare' in the song `malaikkovil vAsalil'. This one of 90's, though arranged in a WC manner (suprano, tenor, alto style of singing in parts), the female vocal is totally Indianised!
Is my observation on this sort of shunning the `western style' singing by Raja after early 80's is correct, or are there samples to prove otherwise?

Nobody mentioned the song from Brahma - 'Engirundo ilanguyilin innisai kettu kanvizhithen'. The second interlude had a haunting chorus which captivated me for a long time. The chorus and the picturisation are simply superb and has captured the whole story in that interlude. The piano interludes were also equally mesmerising.
The happy version of this song has totally different, nice interludes.

Other great interludes:
1) Starting of Allah un anaipadi (Chandralekha)
2) Vanam thottu pona (serious version of Potri padadi ponne from Thevar Magan) - this has an awesome WC type chorus like Passions set by JS Bach.

oops, I meant Other great chorus pieces.
Some more are:
3) Unnai ethirparthen (Vanaja Girija)
4) E rasathi (Ennuyir thozhan)
5) Adho andha nadhiyoram (Ezhai jaathi)
