VV,
"planet bollywood"!! is it the ultimate litmus test of quality or even success! am sure that planet recieves its light from 'stars' such as anu malik and gang. a two star from such a place could actually be a compliment.
well, only seeing the movie can tell you if KH wasted a dream project.
and it isnt a bigdeal about first or second choices. for that matter, who was the first choice for "ROJA"?

VV -- you used to post in this forum before as junior before you ran away -- your only intent seems to be mudslinging. Go gloat in ARR's new release thread.

From Screen India
HEY! RAM
Universal, Rs. 45
Illayaraja comes up with a haunting score for this ambitious film of Kamal Haasan’s. Keeping in mind how difficult it is to compose music for such a serious-themed film, where music has to go along with the mood, and at the same time sound appealing, the veteran music director has done a brilliant job to say the least. And his long association with Kamal Haasan seems to have done a lot of good, since one can sense the teamwork of the duo. A sample of their deep relationship can be seen in the frenzied high-pitched title song, sung by
Kamal Haasan and his daughter Shruti Haasan. Illayaraja exploits their voices so well that both sound great. In fact Shruti Haasan has the makings of a good singer, and with
some training she should go great guns. Sameer is in his elements too, as he comes up with innovative wordplay. The lyrics of the title song strike you because they preach communal harmony by taking Ishwar and Allah’s name in the same breath, as in Raam Raam Assalaam Raam Raam. That’s daring, and the need of the hour. Rani Mukerji recites Bengali poet Jibonananda Dass’ poem endearingly, and surprisingly she doesn’t sound her usual husky self. The best song of the album comes third, the Asha Bhosle-Hariharan sung Janmon ki jwala thi tan mein.
Illayaraja comes up with a wonder in this one, which is very soothing, very romantic and very sensuous, all at the same time. And with Asha singing it, the number achieves that immortal status. There’s also a Marathi lavni, Asa ga madan baan ghusla kasa, which is just
about passable. Kamal Haasan recites a Sanyas mantra.
On the flipside, you get to hear a peppy number Chahe Pandit ho chahe Kazi ho, which also has a communal harmony message in it. Prem bann is the Hindi version of the earlier Marathi lavni, after which comes Gandhiji’s famous bhajan, Vaishnav jana to sung well by Vibha Sharma. Har koyi samjhe, the concluding number, is in the semi-classical mould, sung superbly by Ajay Chakraborty. A score which shows you what good music is all about.

After multiple listenings, two songs in "Hey Ram" sound good: "Ram Ram" and "Isaiyil thodangudhamma". "Isaiyil" is a classic. "Ramaraanaalum" and "Polladha madhana baanam" are run of the mill stuff. Since this movie was hyped so much, the let-down was almost unbearable. Need to see the film to check out the BGM. In contrast, "Kannukkul Nilavu" songs were very good, esp. "Roja Poonthottam", "Nilavu Paattu" and the two KJY numbers. I think Raja did a good job for Fazil; however, the constraints he had to work with for "Hey Ram" show up.
All the above are IMO - Please note that I am a Raja worshipper but trying to give an unbiased opinion.
Thanks fellow surfers.

hey guys,
I dont think Hey ram! songs are so great. This falls much short of IR standard. Sethu and Kannukul nilavu are much better. Looking for more of IR in future.

So he didnt like the lavani? or he did?
"He saw the rushes of the film and decided what he wanted to do. In the case of the Lavni, it didn’t quite turn out to be what I wanted. Even Ashaji (Bhosle) wasn’t very happy with it so she didn’t sing it. Lavni is something that one must feel and understand. It’s not just about getting the mechanics right. There’s a certain spirit of naughtiness into it. Ilayaraja tried to infuse a lot of life into it. But my original concept entailed a transition from a very happy folk song to the symphonic levels of Wagner at the end. Ilayaraja has given a Wagnerian trumpet at the end of the Lavni"

I opted to buy the hindi version of Hey Ram just to get the real flavor of Asha's voice. (Fellow DFers have said that the tamil version is bad in terms of her tamil kolai and that prompted me to buy the hindi version).
Three songs are superb.
1. Kamal/Shruti - Ram Ram
2. Ajay C's rocking , semi-classical
3. Asha/HRs soothing melody
# 3 goes to prove that IR is still fresh with talent. This song reminds me of IR in the late 70's (kind of the Johnny, Ullasa Paravaigal phase). I would call this vintage IR stuff. One of his best in many many years. I just love this song.
# 2 is a delight to listen to. The voice just gets me excited and it is awesome.
Again, given all the situations IR had to compose for this film, it just proves one thing for sure.
"IR can deliver for many more years provided he gets to work with the RIGHT guys"!!!
I am pleased with "Hey Ram".

My favourite is 'isaiyil thodanguthamma'
The rythm in this song is just awesome.
The Ramiy CD has a version of this song where the singer alternates between Hindi and Tamil. But, sometimes it is hard to discern what language he is singing in when:-)
ie: The singer's Tamil pronounciation leaves a bit to be desired for. Other than that he has a unique sweet voice. I was wondering how SPB woud have done it?! hmmmmmm!
