I had the privilage of watching Adoor Gopalakrishnan's latest Malayalam master piece 'Nizhal Kuthu' (Shadow Kill) at the Toronto International Film Festival.
It was an experience I will never forget. The movie was amazing with a lot of symbolism (half of which I only understood after listening to Adoor talk about the movie:-) )
Raja's music was, need I say, was outstanding. There were no songs, of course. But, there is a couple of long flute pieces that are mezmerizing.
For many parts of the movie, Raja remains silent, tis actually enhances the effect of short haunting pieces he plays in between. But he sets the tone right of the bat during the opening titles.
After the movie, there was a Q&A session with Adoor.
I got one question in side-ways. I asked if this was the first time he has worked with Raja and what was his impression of him.
The white dude who was rephrasing the questions on the microphone missed half my question and said "Is this the first time you have worked with Ilaa..., Iyaa...., I'm sorry I din't get that"
So Adoor jumped in and said "Ilayarajah" and as if explaining who Ilayarajah is to the w-dude, he said 'He is an extraordinary composer from south India' and answered my question saying 'Yes this is the first time'
So there you go, that was my 15 second of fame/brush with greatness.

Hi Everybody,
Sorry for the digression
It is good that Mr. Purv revived this thread titled "Huge Tamil MP3 collection" at "http://www.tfmpage.com/forum/8421.16.28.24.html",
I have been an active member ( Downloader ) at the Tamil Hub, maintained by Music lover,it is really very good. Music Lover has done a very good job with a tremandous collection of Tamil songs of many genre of different MDs. Music lover also has a sizeable collection of tamil comedy dramas in Mp3 format for those interested. Please join the hub and share the music. It is really surprising that Tamil group is the only one which doesn't have a lot of peer to peer shared groups, when Audiogalaxy was up, there used to be a very active Telugu and malayalam group. I wish and hope everybody who is interested should join the hub.
Happy downloading
Thanks to Music lover for the great work
Prabhudas

Hihi,
The theater was almost full(approx 400 people). As with all other festival releases, most of the audience were white/black/yellow/green/pink/blue (ie: very few brown people)
I think it was very well received by the audience, based on the reactions in the theater and the Q&A session

And Indian portals like Rediff that are extensively 'covering' the Toronto festival (read - give publicity to the likes of Shekhar Kapoor and Mira Nair) have not reviewed or written in detail about the premier of Adoor's film!
Am I surprised?

Peterpan,
Kapoor's movie is a Hollywood production in English - has nothing to do with Inia or Indians.
Mira Nair's contribution to 09/11/01 was a 11 minute segment as one of nine directors contributing to a documentary, on what else, but 9/11. She dealt with the racism that prevailed in post 9/11 times. So has little to do withb India.
Mani Ratnam's KM, Budhaheb Dasgupta's Tale of Naughty Girl (I don't know the Bengali original name), and Adoor's movie were the 'real' Indian contributions, even though Adoor's movie was touted as a French-Indian co-production.
The other 'Indian' movie was Bollywood/Hollywood, a Canadian production by Deepa Mehta. It was a comedy dealing mostly with Indian parents and Canadian kids.
As for Redif's behaviour, it just shows the chronic inferiority complex India has.

About the score being orchestral or not,
There was a lot of string instruments used. But other than that it was quite folkish.
That's all my little brain could grasp.

Music director Mani Sharma says IR is his idol and that he worships his music.
But I found his views on the different tastes of Telugu and Tamil listeners to be an excuse to some of his junk stuff. IR has ruled the melody scene in Telugu films for many years and has been toasted by the Telugu audience in a big way!

Very good link !! i think it clarifies one more accusation on IR that the song "orampoo " was vulgar as GA himself has mentioned the reason behind it. I used to listen to the excellent song "Malar pole " early morning in vijay tv around 5 30 pm nu nenaikaren. it would be very pleasant to hear that song in the morning. Rombo varshal aachu adhellam kettu , i miss it

Watched 'Desiya Geetham' in DD Yesterday night ...
Believe me, this movie is to be watched just for its BGM Quality - IR has done extremely good work - (two small examples could be the scene where Murali & co kidnaps the CM and when the CM (Chinna maariyappan now ;-) is taken to the government hospital - summaa ulukki edukkaRaar raja !), Wow, this man really adds value to whatever he is doing ...
One more thing - bit songs which IR himself sings as part of BGM (not in cassette) are a real treat ! kiNdalum, geliyum kalantha nakkal songs - with folk flavour in them - May be IR himself wrote all those ? :-/

NagaS,
You are right about DG. A movie watchable just for the bgm, as you rightly said, the kidnap scene in Ooty lake.
The songs in the ration shop and stone quary are hilarious!
Another fantastic bit song is Annal Gandhi/Nanba Nanba, which is full of patriotism and about today's India!
Unfortunately, the movie didnt do well :(

DG movie was good yaar, had lot of thoughtful and sharp dialogues and 'not so illogical' story ! I am wondering why it didn't do well ...
