lone_ranger,
It was only India's official ENTRY to the Oscars, just as Nayakan, Indian, Anjali (and surprisingly, Jeans) etc. in the past.
That doesn't necessarily mean it gets nominated by the jury in the Foreign Film category.
In fact the only entries from India so far that fetched a nomination are:
1. Mother India (Hindi)
2. SalAm Bombay (Hindi)
I read a quote by this year's Indian selection committe member one Sushma Shiromanee:
"Mohabbatein should be the entry because it shows Indian culture". She voted against Hey Ram. One of the people even said the film Hey Ram was unsuitable for Hindi audiences as it showed 'too much of a South Indian culture" !! Can you beat that?
I wonder what credentials these people have!
JOKE OF THE YEAR, I should say. All that the film 'showed' was cleavage of buxom beauties, which is still fetching repeat audience to the theatres.
You never know the same people will vote the film as the BEST FILM PROVIDING WHOLESOME FAMILY ENTERTAINMENT in this year's National Awards.
All Yash Chopra movies lobby for this award and in 99% of the cases have fetched them (even the gruesome Cape Fear copy, DARR). So all we can do is sulk over the dismissal of a better made entertainer like 'Kandu kondain, kandu kondain'.

Neels, while most part of your posting is agreeable, I'm not with you in calling KKKK a better made entertainer:-( Except those scenes featuring Mammootty, it was a `vadham'.

The moment I saw 'Mohabattein" promos on TV...I knew it was one of those pseudo-romantic film...actually the whole thing looked so made-up and appalling..sorry I know this is IR's latest thread but I had to vent my anger...

Neels,
"even the gruesome Cape Fear copy, DARR"
The story of Cape Fear goes something like this:
Robert Deniro gets convicted for a crime and goes to jail.He is under the impression that his lawyer(Nick Nolte) didn't defend him well.So when he comes out of jail he wants to torment his lawyer.
He keeps on stalking his lawyer(Actually he enjoys it).The lawyer is frightened. But the weird daughter of the lawyer takes a fancy for De Niro ... and it goes on like this with some interesting developments.
If I'm right that this is pretty much the plot of Cape Fear I don't see any resemblance to DARR.

hmm..it was a bad idea to leave Harappa and go south :) :)

Did they site this as a reason for not recommending the movie to Oscars? In that case, no Indian movie can make it.
BTW, why are we worried about getting/not getting an Oscar?

Darr's climax was copied from Cape Fear. Both were set on a boat.

The plot of Darr is copied from The Crush *ing Alicia Silverstone. In this the girl has a psychotic crush on the guy.

If such people constitute our Awards Board...then I feel really sorry for our film industry....what we actually need is something like the Academy of Motion Picture, Arts and Sciences (AMPAS)...not these cheap-sounding Lux Filmfare awards and such...it really brings down the art of film-making to the level of a soap opera....
BTW..a bold move was taken some years ago by a renegade CEO of an Indian ad agency who was fed up with the commercialization of ad awards as well as film awards...he approched the top man at AMPAS with the idea of holding an Indian version of the Oscars bcos after all India was the largest producer of films in the world...they were receptive and this CEO even designed the Indian version of the statuette...but the idea was killed by the industry counterparts here...I don't want to mention names bcos this guy is my ex-boss...disillusioned today he shuns all awards and publicity...

AWARDS -POURING SHAME ON ITSELF!!
ANOTHER CRIME BY AWARD BENCH - ESPECIALLY MUSIC DIRECTOR CHOICE,
MUSIC OF FILM 'BHARATHI' IS FAR BETTER AND BEYOND REACH OF SONGS OF
THE REFUGEE -ANUMALIK(M.D)
IT IS VERY CLEAR THAT PURE MUSICAL CREDENTIALS AND TECHNICAL
SOUNDNESS ARE NOT THIER FACTORS FOR AWARDS.
THE AWARD BENCH ONLY EXPRESSES ITS ILLITERACY ON MUSIC BY NOT
SELECTING FILM BHARATHI WHERE I.RAAJA WENT ON RAMPAGE TO GIVE BEST
MELODY IN THE WORLD.
"THE HINDU" DAILY KNOWN FOR ITS ESTEEM IN NEWSPAPER WORLD IGNORED
THE PROJECTION OF TAMIZHNADU AWARDWINNERS "SHANKAR MAHADEVAN" AND
BHAVATHARINI(MALE AND FEMALE PLAYBACK SINGERS) AND WENT ON TO SAY
'MAIL POLA'SONG OF BHARATHI INSTEAD OF 'MA YIL POHLA'IN 15TH PAGE.
ITS NOT A GREAT IDEA TO NEGLECT OR SUPRESS THE PROJECTIONS OF
TAMIZH AWARDWINNERS WHEN IT ENJOYS THE MAXIMUM CIRCULATION ONLY FROM
TAMIZH PEOPLE.
AWARDS-LOST ANOTHER OPPORTUNITY TO HONOUR ITSELF BY NOT SELECTING GENIUS ILAIRAAJA, POURING SHAME ON ITSELF!!

The Hindu had on it's front page itself the info on SM & BD, did you see properly?
BTW, today's Hindu editorial lashes out on the Natl awards...the article itself starts like `Natl awards have become a farce several years ago and it continues this year too':-))

Is IR's score for 'Scribbles on Akka' (Kannada non-feature starring Seema Biswas) available commercially?
I believe the director (Tanushree) had asked IR to give the old verses/songs (which are popular with the people of Karnataka and sung at classical Hindustani concerts by greats such as the Late Mallikarjun Mansur) a modern, pop-touch as she was interpreting them in the present day context and she says he has done a fabulous job.
Bangaloreans, any idea if the album is available?

and searching a small line in a list.IAM DEMANDING PROJECTION OF
TAMIZH ARTIST'S INSTEAD OF OTHERS atleast by a regional newspaper.
1st applaud ur local talents HINDU.

THE HINDU has been giving more prominence for North Indian stuff in the 'Entertainment' as well as 'Chennai' sections for the last couple of years.
I too feel like an alien when I read some of the articles on Chennai... I have also written a very strong letter to 'The Hindu' (with lot of concern) - but no reply.
There might be two reasons
-- a survey of the Chennai City Market for Hindu readership would have showed a big chunk of N.Indian population
-- many HINDU reporters who report on Chennai / Entertainment events are from N.India - so they tend to project what they feel as best ... If you look at the reporters' names on the bottom of the article you can find many N.Indian surnames.

Third reason:
Hindu also has fallen prey to the complex that giving prominence to Hindi makes you more 'Indian'. Similar to using Synth beats, digital mixing makes you more 'global'.
