  I am totally upset with IR ..so real instruments and WCM treatment is reserved only for BGms these days..oliyilE therivadhu is glaringly poppish compared to these BGMs..He probably thinks we wont appreciate all these things in songs..these days..!!! I just cant imagine what a classic ..oliyilE would be with a WCM treatment like this BGM!! what a pity !!!

  Kiru, the 'poppish' arrangements started years ago.. The blinding success of "Ennai thAlAtta varuvALO" from K/Mariyadhai marked the paradigm shift in IR's approach to songmaking, and in my opinion, corrupted what could have been many a magical tune.. As I type, I'm listening to Thalapathi's 'Sundari KannAl oru cheithi". Can we hope for another song like this?

  suresh, think it started much earlier than KM. Konji Konji from Veera, Nethu Oruthara from Pudhu Paattu, Maharajanodu from Sathileelavathi to name a few. KM, maybe reinforced the idea.
  I'm no expert, but you can clearly see a shift in his style. its been a long time since he has given a non-synth album (that is not for a rural theme).

  The albums Bharathy and Time might be an exception to what you said, but I agree with you that IR's style shifted in movies like Rasayya etc. alongwith the ones you mentioned.
  
  Somehow, IR's malayalam movies still retain his old style...Kaalapani, Guru etc. Even his last Telugu movie "Anthahpuram" belongs to the "new-style" category.

  On the contrary, Kaumudi. "Thavikkiren" from Time and "Edhilum Ingu" from Bharathy sound very poppish to me. Time has a lot of such songs. Don't take me wrong, I still love them. But, I prefer the 70s style of raaja.

  I too prefer IR's pre-90s style. What I meant was that these movies' songs sounded a little "more natural" (if you will!) compared to many IR's post-90s movies. I guess it is a personal opinion:)

  Actually, I like the kind of POP which IR usually does, like in ninaivellAm nithya..but he seems to be going out of his way to use synth version of instruments in songs these days.. He is avoiding strings completely. Somehow, if it is tamil, he is leaving all WCM styles, completely out of it. Atleast Time, had synth version of strings..but we get totally different sounds in oliyilE.
  
  Anyways, the instrumental version of oliyile was too good I cant but express a desire to hear it in the song as well.

  When you say strings do you mean Guitar or including violin as well? I listened to Devan and couple of songs have these instruments. But first time I heard of heavy bass in IR's song (Thaalaattum Kaatre) dominating voice.
