We all know that IR has sung many memorable songs, but here are four of my all-time favorties.
4) Dharisnam Kedaikatha - Alaigal Oivyathillai - first song I heard IR singing, and it instantly become one of my favorites.
3)Valli Valli Ena Vanthan - Deiva Vaaku - Another unforgettable song sung by IR.
2)Thendral Vanthu Theendum Pothu - Avatharam - WOW, is what I said when I first heard this song. Absolutely phenomenal song and it would have been my #1 song if it weren't for....
1)Naan Thedum Sevvanthi Poove - Dharma Pathini - the best song that IR has sung, in my opinion. Also has amazing lyrics. Just edges out Thendral Vanthu.....,
So, there are my picks. I like to know some of yours.

Hi Eden,
Your question is a valid one. IR has 1 min 9 secs (opening alaap by him last 40 secs.) in that song Thenpandichimaiyile (the entire composition is 4 mins 24 secs. the rest of it is in Kamalhaasan's voice. )
Emotion is an integral part of many songs. But the example you provide as evidence - right in the opening alaap - there are two off-key moments and breathlessness. The emotional weight of the song, in my opinion, was entirely in the lyrics and picturisation. Not in the singing. You may think otherwise, and that is your prerogative and I respect that.
However, despite the glitches in the singing, if this song stands the test of my definition (in your ears,) then I have to accept that to be your estimation and leave it at that.
(Oru chinna request, eden: If you want to continue this discussion, could you please address your follow-on concerns/insights in the Why Do MDs Sing? thread. This is a thread where such an analysis might seem inappropriate and also be irrelevant. I appreciate your consideration. Thanks.)

omission in line 4, please take note Eden:

In the first place, if you thought there was no single song of IR that you could mention here, why the heck did you stoop to the level of making some cheap and unwarranted comment to begin with? You should have kept off this thread. Looks like you have mistaken this to be one of your bhajana mandrams where you say something and others would repeat whatever you say. And then, my fun comments on your fun comments gives you a rude shock, your ego takes over you, you feel offended, go to the extent of even making insipid statement as IR not being a singer, and talk things that are of no relevance to this thread. Nobody needed proof of the ego personified you and your level-headedness in this thread too. Instead of offering an unconditional apology to other dfers for this in the very beginning and vanishing from this thread decently, here you are still vomiting your biased opinions and exhibiting heights of double standards and shamelessness. And in the same breath you talk of decency and butting off eh! Isn't this what is supposed to be "irony of ironies"? Even a dog will understand better than you.
All this might be poojai according to you but first understand what "Ananya Bhakti" is from Bhagavad Gita. Understanding is being able to think at others level and it is more than evident that you lack it. Your contribution in this thread is display of limitless ego and arrogance (and needless to say, not even 1 good song of IR). It is very much evident how much you hate IR from all the praises you have showered on him in various threads. If at all IR has some ego it is understandable, and maybe even justifiable for all his achievements, contributions, and whatever he is, which you will neither understand nor simply accept. But then look at how small a person you are and the egoistic "you". This is the very reason why you are still single and full of frustration resulting in hatred and utter contempt of respected personalities, other than VJ - your idol. My sincere suggestion ? get married. (I don't want to explain this. Hope u would understand. All the very best.)
Lastly, there are lesser mortals than you in this df. Have a magnanimous heart and spare them a little so that they can also express some of their silly feelings and feel happy about it. Be a little kind to them without making fun and disregarding their comments outright.
To all others:
I apologize to you for getting a little personal with this guy. I usually don't resort to such things but went down a little along with him.
Here is this fanatic of VJ who thinks that his idol has no defects/shortcomings without ever having gone wrong in any of her songs, and that IR has not even one good song to his credit that deserves to be mentioned in this thread. There was no need for him to say so in this thread, which he did. Coming from this man, calling this as height of fanaticism and absurdity would be an understatement. But then, my making such an understatement is much better than, making grossly exaggerated statements of praising VJ and strong damaging statements displaying utter contempt towards other respected personalities, as this joker does. I feel his very first comment in this thread and later talking very low of IR and other comments were totally unwarranted, had no relevance to this thread, and were purely done to satisfy his ego-thirst. I just thought I'll speak a little against his unwarranted behavior in this thread. Looks like he is all vetti and I cannot spend as much time here. And as usual, the guy who has little time has to give up and I am more than glad to do so.

I felt "Ninnai charaN adaindhEn" from Bharati also to be a good one. He was bold enough to sing a song that was sung by Bombay Jayashree. I liked both versions.
Not sure how many had noticed this but while singing the pallavi towards the end of the song, IR sings "Ninnai" with more gamakams in a lower pitch while Jayashree sings it plainly just as it is sung in the beginning. That kind of gamakams or other variations towards the end is so typical of IR's songs. Makes me think if IR had improvised after Jayashree's rendering or if she herself had preferred singing it straight when she did.

My pick of IR's songs from the last few years would be "iniya malargal malarum" from Poonthottam..A good intense tune, for which he has done fair amount of justice

To begin with: My rejoinder was to Vengayam's post. Not yours. Secondly, my response was to eden and !@$ - they addressed me directly. It was my choice to respond to their questions. And last of all: I have never said VJ is my "idol" or have used any such words (if that is what you think - why don't you bring this up in the VJ thread, you coward?
I am not one of those "groupies" - which you are - and others here, whether they agree with my post or not, can see that for themselves.
I am sure posters here can see my calibre in my posts. And they can also see your bilge.

regarding bombay jayashree's rendition of "ninnai charan adaindhaen" (Bharathi),as far as info goes, ilayaraja doesnt allow singers to try their own stuff like rahman... this can be confirmed when u listen to various interviews given by singers who hv sung under ilayaraja... ilayaraja demands strict adherence to his tune (SPB,SJ,KJY maybe exceptions).. whereas rahman gives freedom to the singer to try his own and picks up what he (rahman) feels, suits the mood.... and no.. am not for a new thread on "working styles of IR and rahman"... but this is a fact... whatever the style be, the songs are gud.. and thats what matters, period. so i dont think bombay jayashree had something to do with the song except singing :-)

ilAiyarAjA did not sing bombay jayashree's song but rather the other way around.
rAjA generally sings the track for a lot of his compositions to demonstrate how he wants the song sung. That is why you hear a lot of rAjA songs on the cd/cassette but never in the movie.

"Oru gundumani" from Avathaaram. A few words to begin with, that turns into a jovial song sung in a very casual manner and suits Nasser to the T. This is another song that none of the other singers could have done justice to.
