Like Guitar Prasanna, I too am in awe most of the songs he singled out, particularly this one: Vaanam Kizhe Vandhaal Enna (TTThoongathe) the percussion thru out the song is - how in the heavens it is so unique. No song in the world of the many million stuff i've heard has a percussion or rhythm of such a high level and that too so perfect for such a unique melody. I hear the song only for the percussion and the interludes. I think the astonishing interludes which included some guitar phrases were they played by Prasanna himself? Anyway, that song is Mini Magum Opus the right word i am also looking for. This song somehow has something special in its melody - is it a kind of inspiration of the song 'Out in the west Texas town of "El Paso"' a country song of the 50s? (which i consider one of the greatest melodies of all time) BUT IR' interpretation of that song lacked a strong melody orientation. That was probably why that song did not become a popular hit and i hear it mostly for the interludes and the rhythm, though i thought this song was far too advanced when it came out at that time, little understanding melody issues at that time.

aruLaracan, I thought, 'thAn peRRa inbam peRuga ivvaiyagam' :) Checking out tfmpage.com is my way of keeping in touch with music, which I dont get to hear much these days..being busy at work and at home as well. (my sennheiser is a 455)
Prabhudas, I have my brother in chennai scouting for LPs of old IR classics. He has around 50 LPs now, I think. I will get them here soon. With whatever CDs I have, I have setup a music system to bring out all the details possible out of those CDs. IR songs because of the bass and natural percussion require full range speakers. I am looking to upgrade to one once I have enough funds. There are quite a number of IR fans here who have music systems mainly to enjoy the acoustic music of IR.

vem,
I think you are talking about 'Pattu vaNNa Rosaavaam' ... It is from "kannip paruvaththilae", MD is Shankar Ganesh,
Its a good song, But for me it looks like a cheap copy of IR's classic 'Uchchi Vaguntheduththu' !

A nice article by Guitar prasanna The fav song list was very interesting. There is one song which has not been mentioned and also is least discussed, which IMHO is the real crowning jewel for Raja.
That song is "Poo vaadai Kaatre" from "My dear kuttichaatan".
This song epitomizes raja's work.
To me the greatest song composed by any Indian composer. Even raja has'nt come close to it. It is a real labor of love and complete workmanship in display. Hats off to all the musicians who have played.
A complete analytical work can be done on this song.
It has WCM,ICM with counterpoints and chromatism bound all over.
Someboedy like prasanna can bring out more on this song.

Kumar, there's no doubt about it. I saw it in the theatre when released. Apart from the credits which said it's IR, my ears tuned to the Raja music also stand as testimony:-)

After you had mentioned about the Vaanam Kile....I am listning to it with headphones. Man the intro is one of the greatest pluckings I have ever heard ....actually if you hear it from the prasanna's fav songs..the 6th song. You will notice at the 4th sec, a elect bass guitar starting off a great rythm.oh my god ...aaha....yappa yenna effect....thalaivar thalaivar thaan. Actually best about his style is that he does not keep stressing the same piece again and again...Its as though that piece is as-a-matter-of-fact that is also just another part of the song. This is what is missing in all the new mds ....IMHO

The way IR gives intro to songs mesmerizes the listeners - Vaanam kile is just an instance. Other songs like poo vaadai kaaatru, en purushan than enakku mattum dhan(gopurangal saivathillai), songs from salangai oli - really unbeleivable. Not even a day goes without listening to atleast 5 evergreen songs of the Raaja.

Great comments by 'Guitarprasanna' about IR.
I know how much this guy admires IR. My brother who is a great pal of Prasanna from IIT,Madras told me that once while they were driving around Madras, Prasanna excitedly asked my brother to stop the scooter & ran towards a teashop on the roadside saying ''excellent song'' excellent song Mani''---the song was ''thendral vandhu theendumbothu'' from AVATHARAM. He apparently stood where he was till the song finished playing.
