Dear Nithin,
Romba romba "thanks " for the info. on
"INDIA 24 HOURS " - I was very much worried about the length of the album I had purchased in the form of audio cassette.
As for the album itself , there are certain elements throughout the entire course of the album, which make my heart scream out !! Man , if this guy give so much in this, I wonder how his SYMPHONY is going to sound -
Naan romba naalagavey naathhigam pesikkondirundhaen - IRin indha idaividaadha creativity anubavittha piragu, Kadavul oru velai irukkiraaro yenum perum mana sanjalathhai yaerpaduthhiyulladhu.
I am dying to get hold of all the five albums mentioned by Krishna - especially, "POONTHOTTAM".
SMALL DIGRESSION : Is there any TFM DF friends residing/working in Germany ? I need this info. because, very soon I am likely to be at the Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry for my research.
Please do let me know if there is somebody at Germany.

I received "Kavalaipadathe Sagothara" CD this week . The songs in this movie reiterates why IR is still the genius he is. The song "Thiruvonam Thirunalo" by IR and Sujatha is excellent. The innovation IR shows in this song is in the composition of the song. It is so melodious and rings in my ears continuously.
The song "chinna chinna" is by a whole bunch of people and is very melodious.
The song "Iswara Alla" is a very cleverly composed qawali type song. IR distinguishes himself by the variety he has shown in the five songs. The fifth song is a religious song so well composed and pleasant to listen.
Hats off to Ilayaraaja!

Suresh
What about the maha songs Raja composed in Poonthottam, which took 3 days and he assured that it will be a national hit? How is that song and how has sung that?
Thanks

I just got "Poonthotam" !
The song "Meetatha oru Veenai" is out of the world. I don't think it took 14 hours becos of the raga. On the contrary a striking feature of the song, is that its a '5 beat' song and the timing is complicated. So that could've been the reason as well. Not enuf epithets to describe the song. If director Kalanjiyam makes good, in the back drop of kullu manali, the total outcome would be outstandingly "Deyveegam".
Another song "Vennilavukku" is also good. "Iniya malargal" is next best. I would pay Rs.38/- just for that one song !
Isai Kadal, Ilayaraja, I celebrated your birthday with this song !!!
IR Vazgha !

Hi Nithin,
I dont know which is the song that took three days. There is one song welcoming the Year 2000. I cannot say that I was very impressed with this song. My take is that it is OK. As Kitty had stated, "Meetatha Oru Veenai" is definitely an excellent song. My fav song this year till now. As Kitty had said, the raga is not a new or a rare one. It is Rithi Gowla. But the beat definitely is complicated. The interludes are also brilliant. My own guess is that "Vennilavukku" may become the bigger hit though I consider "Meetatha" as the best song. Just get the tape as soon as you can.

Hi Suresh, Thx for clearing my doubts on the Raga. I could only notice that it was the same raga of "Chinna Kannan Azhaikiraan". And This is popularly known as a song in Rithi Gowlam. Between my last posting and this,I have heard the song around 10 times ! Yes its possible that Vennilavukku may become a greater hit, as it is very light and in the usual IR style.
NO.. the new year song is no good. It started with a decent chorus, but after that...
Maybe thats how 21st century music is gonna be.

For the movie "Desiya Geetham" to be directed by cheran and featuring Murali, Raja and a team of 20
went to Bombay and the recording was done for 6 songs. It is rumoured that raja has given importance for western orchestration for this movie. Also it is to be noted that raja is going to bombay for recording for the first time after
Dalapathi.

This is not true, Ilaiyaraaja recorded
'rAsaiyA' songs in Bombay. And I firmly
believe that he also went there for
malayalam movie 'yAtramozhi'.

IR is also doing music for a big budget movie called TIME being made in five languages. TIME 's cast is not yet finalised and is to be directed by Geetha Krishna (No Idea who she is).

I read about it (Shankar and IR) in the latest issue of Kalki, in the cinema column.

Thanks for the link.
Sounds like IR is really going all out with his assignments now.

Geetha Krishna is if I may say so, a flop Telugu director. He was K.Viswanath's assistant and like the other Viswanath's assistant-turned-director Vamsi, Geethakrishna is a major IR-Bhaktha. He has directed 5 0r 6 movies I think and AFAIK they all had IR's music.
Let me recollect:
1) "Sankeerthana" with Nagarjuna and Ramya krishna, semi-classical music by IR. Good songs, btw. But the movie bombed.
2) Kokila (a thriller with Shobhana) - his only hit. Hit songs by IR (I think they are OK personally)
3) Keechuraallu (another flop movie..)
I know he has done a couple more movies, but can't recollect...
Personally, I wouldn't get too excited about this project. Sounds very ambitious, but I don't believe Geetha Krishna is that good..
But who knows, may be he will surprise me..

That will be a good change of style or pace for Raja, if directors like Sankar really could get Raja to compose for them.
Most importantly, I feel it is time IR ventured out on creating songs or music more introspective in nature, you know, slower, deliberate concerto style and fewer of the catchy quick paced melody numbers. I think Vidyasagar is someone who is trying to do something of that nature, but is not quite effective. It is really noticeable in the interludes of Vidyasagar.
Symphonies are by nature somewhat introspective and it will be a revelation to see, if IR has really got into that mood, when the Symphony is within our reach soon.
Such introspective music will be practicable if we have the musicals/opera type theater performances. Something like the CATS, Phantom of the Opera, Jesus Christ Superstar or Marriage of the Figaro. I think a market for such kind of creativity have yet to emerge in India. Most of western classical music is devoted to romance and introspection.
However, if such themes arise, IR can really have a field time producing those one hour long albums which are slow in nature and have the basis for producing a theme that develop gradually. Aah, yes I remember the best example is the Miss World Contest for which IR composed music. However, that had short pieces with more emphasis given on dance tempo.
Just what I feel is what would be a change of pace for Illaiyaraja. What do you folks think?

Hai
Rajini next movie is going to be directed by K.S.Ravikumar. The music for this movie is going to be composed by Deva and not Raja
as reported earlier.
Another story of stabbing in the back.

Deva for Rajini's next venture - so what ? ? !!
there will be another "ADHAANDAA IDHAANDA" - our erstwhile superstar is badly looking for a break after his muddling up of the BJP - bomb affair at Coimbatore - most of his fans have gone against him - some even writing letters of condemnation to him for making stupid remarks.
So, IR remains unscathed - the loser is Rajini all over again.
