Overall the lyrics is good.
Niagra song sucks!!!
My fav.
1. chakkaravAgamO
(I except songs like this from ARR)
2. Theendai
(This song is set to raga which is similar to
Sinthamani Sinthamani by vidyasagar)
Superbly rendered by S.P.B
3.Jumbalakka
Nice to move your feet
Rafi has spoiled the song.
Sounds very very familiar.
I skip all the other songs as they don't impress me.
I strongly recommend KR and YSR to use Vairamuthu.
Cheers

Hey,
Jumbala : New tune from ARR, reminds old ceylon songsm or Haawa Haawa, also Beat interludes sounds like (lifted )from Lord of Dances. Sure a foot-taper.

Heard the ESK album a couple of times yesterday. A question: is it just me or someone else think ARR tends to overproduce albums a lot? I think by spending too much time in the studio striving for perfection, he makes some of the numbers kind of "sterile"?
(Obligatory footnote: No flames please. I like ARR as much as the next ARR fan)

Venkat: Please explain over-produce. When you say sterile, do you mean that they sound too contrived and that the natural flow is tampered with? I'm partially in agreement with you, as this element does appear to exist.
If you're thinking along the same lines as me, I guess maybe you mean that sometimes, one cannot get the vocals with clarity, as the instrumentation supersedes it? I felt this in some songs, particularly in this album, as there are many slow numbers and a regular complaint from listeners was that they couldn't make out the lyrics properly, especially without the aid of the words book provided by Pyramid......
By the way, it's hit the top of the UK charts already. Most shops have sold out and practically everyone I know has run and bought a copy. It looks as if people have been waiting 'too long' to get an ARR album, as happened with Uyire and are generally happy with the output. The general impression I get is that they are happy to hear Chithra sing and many have been very thrilled by the SPB/Chithra song, as it has a pure Classical base, but ARR seems to have nicely blended JUNGLE beats, in appropriate places, without tampering with the momentum of the song and keeping the music 'flowing'. Has anyone been able to confirm if it is in Sri Ragam or Manirangu(They are both quite similar, but as I'm not so farmiliar with the latter, I'm finding it sounding more and more like the former.....)

It looks as if people have been waiting 'too long' to get an ARR album, as happened with Uyire and are generally happy with the output. Many have said that it requires a few listens to be able to pick up the melodic content, even though I liked 5/6 numbers immediately. Many have not been happy with MG Sreekumar's accent. I guess it's the way he pronounces Mazlai Thuli...... I feel that it sounds cute.
The general impression I get is that they are happy to hear Chithra sing and many have been very thrilled by the SPB/Chithra song, as it has a pure Classical base(but beats section made to keep the non-carnatic listeners happy), but ARR seems to have nicely blended JUNGLE beats, in appropriate places, without tampering with the momentum of the song and keeping the music 'flowing'. Not to upset the IR fans again but, I feel that this use of jungle is of a better variety than that of Oh Baby Baby in Kadhalukku Mariyaathai, where it suddenly jumps out at you?!?!? Don't get me wrong, my point is that in this song, it has not been used as a separate entity, but been incorporated with the existing rhythm pattern, simply joining a tempo change, whereas, Oh baby had it as an immediately distinguishing 'original?' 'feature'?!?!?
By the way, has anyone been able to confirm if the Ragam of Theendai is in Sri Ragam or Manirangu(They are both quite similar, but as I'm not so farmiliar with the latter, I'm finding it sounding more and more like the former.....).

Geetha: I really dont know how to "define" over-produce, but let me give you an example. Many of the recent boy/girl band
pop-chart toppers here in the US (Backstreet Boys/Brittany Spears/N Sync etc.) are accused of it - slick is probably a better
word...if you have heard these artists, you probably know what I am talking about. It is definitely not contrived, but I get a
feeling that ARR spends too much time on a song to give a polished sheen to it. Uhhh...I know I am not making myself clear.
:-( Your point on "Oh Baby Baby" is right on the money - the jungle beats are very disembodied, unlike the ARR song u
referred to.

Well,i am NOT in agreement with saying "one cannot get vocals clearly as the instuments supersedes it". I could listen very clearly all the lyrics in this album . I was able to write down the lyrics for 'thirakkatha kattukkuLLe' in about 3 to 4 listenings. I could also get the lyrics for 'en swaswak katre' in the same manner. In fact , i was able to do so by listening to the songs on the net. ( i am not sure how its original CD may sound!) I could also listen to the lyrics of other songs comfortably. But i was not keen to get lyrics on songs like 'jimbalaka' and 'niagra' as they failed to please me for want of decency.
I am also not in agreement with saying "the natural flow is tampered with". One should take a good listen at the interludes of "en swasak katre" , "thirakkatha" and "thuli thuli". One can very well see the natural rythm flowing. (should listen to veenai balachandar in the second interlude of 'en swasak katre', reminded me of 'milE suru mErA thumArA'). We should not judge the album merely by numbers like "Jimbalaka" and "Niagra". In fact these are good feet-tappers even though they lack in lyrical sense.
There are mixed reactions on this album based on the discussions going on in "ARRfansclub". IMO, it is an album with variety. I would certainly buy this for 1 ,2, 3 and 4.

Geetha: Oh! I completely forgot!! I wanted to ask you: the "Jungle Beats" that you are referring to ...aren't they more like drum 'n bass?? Curious...yeah, I accidentally copied your reference to it as "Jungle Beats" in my previous post

The "theendai" song is interesting and I like it -- IMO, SPB sang it very well. Chitra did her part. I just want to know who uttered those initial and ending words...I don't think it is Chitra...
Also, when those words (beginning) end and before Chitra takes over, some peculiar sound comes -- I really like that sound. It reminds of music in movies of the black and white era -- to be specific "pouranika" movies (a telugu word!! sorry for forcing it in TFM). ARR should be appreciated for digging and bringing such sounds. Can someone let me know what that instrument was (asking too much without explaining clearly what I am refering to;-) But I feel someone could get my intentions). Is it harmonium??
I liked Theendai, Thirakkada and Junballaka of the lot.
cheers,
srikanth

The song "chinna chinna mazhaithuLigaL" is growing on me real fast. The first and second charanam(or anupallavi and charanam!) are
worth million bucks
I just want to mention those lines. varigalilE yethEnum pizhaiyirunthAl adiyEnai maNNikkavum.
"siru poovinilE vizhunthAl oru thEnthuLiyAy varuvAi
siru siRpiyilE vizhunthAl oru mottenavE malarvAi
payir verinilE vizunthAl navathANiyamAi viLaivAi

antha iyarkai aNNai padaitha oru periya shower ithu
ada intha vayathu kazhinthAl piRagengu nanaivathu
ivaL kaNNiyenba thinthamazhai kaNdarinthu sonnathu"
(boy, i am completely bowled!)
take a note of the last two lines in the 2nd charanam(following)
"mazhai kavithai koNdu varuthu yArum kathavadaikka vEndAm
oru karuppu kodi kAtti yArum kudai pidikka vENdAm
ithu dEvathaiyin parisu yArum thirumbi koLLa vEndAm

nee vAzha vantha vAzhvil oru paguthi izhakkirAi
nee kaNgal moodi karaiyumpOthu maNNil soRgam yeithuvAi"
the last two lines has the message;-))
