Somehow I find "en swaasakkatre" song similar in melody and expression to "Poovile medi naan podave". Both are lilting.

Nithin: Yes, indeed Sivamani worked with IR(He manually played a lot of stuff that normally cannot be played without the aid of drum machines). He has also worked with MSV and started playing professionally at the age of Seven, for SPB. I can't think that Sivamani 'boasted', he's a very very humble guy. Of course, he's very proud of having worked with IR, he really speaks highly of him, the reason he doesn't work with him now is that IR requires a full time person, whereas ARR calls him to do bulk sessions when needed and then he's free to carry on with his other pursuits.... By the way, look put for him in Rhythm, he does a solo..... Also, you may remember him from the video of Mustafa in Kadhal Desam....

Nags: I think MGS also sang a version of Nenje Gurunathan. If I remember correctly, there are two numbers in the excellent Mogha Mull by him, just that his version of Nenje was not used in the actual movie, but only appeared in the Pyramid Album....

Geetha,
never pay attention to those petty minded remorseless critics having an attitude of dog in the manger. These are products with batteries not included. Just keep it going.

nags,
I'm sure there's a MGS version too in the movie mogamuLL. probably raja preferred AM's version bcos MGS's tamil wasn't all that good.

shankar:
I only have a recorded version of "Nenje Gurunathanin" ,thats sung by Arunmozhi.I am not sure about the MGS version !
MGS sang all the songs in "Kaala Paaani"( the Malayalam version of "Sirai Chalai") and also a song in "Guru".
Geetha, I remember having read somewhere that Sivamani played the percussion in IR's "Anjali".

Kitcha: Absolutely right about Anjali. He also played on the Punnagai Mannan - infact, I heard that he played by hand, what the programmer(maybe Purushothaman) couldn't programme - a rolling technique.... He really adores IR and says that he was a pleasure to work for. Apparently, ARR is also an excellent guy to work with, WRT the percussion side, as he allows for a lot of 'freestyle' work.... and also a wonderful person. I believe that there was an interview in Kumudam/Anandha Vikatan about his experiences with then both.....
MGS's version of Nenje Gurunathan, as I remember it was very good, apart from the fact that his Tamil isn't so good. I have the same problems with Tamil, as there are 3 L's and 3 N's, it's so confusing.... When I sing, I have to pay particular attention to this.... I believe KJJ also had those pronounciation problems in the distant past?!?!?

Geetha, you're right..Malayali's ( I am one myself !!)generally have a problem with pronouncing the 3 L's in Tamil as there are only 2 in malayalam !!
So, KJJ and MGS sometimes goof up on their pronounciation , though they make up for that with their superior singing skills !

IR's main percussion man is Purushothaman(who is also a good friend of SivamaNi) Heard this from SivamaNi himself in a Sun TV Program a year ago.
SivamaNi appeared in kaavi dress and was very decent in the show. He did a thani aavarththanam at the end of the show.

Hello music fans
This is my review of 'En Swasa Katre' after listening to it two times. First let me thank 'Susi' for having these songs on the net.
1. Jimbalaka: Comes under the category of dance type numbers. The chord progression of this song especially of the chorus Jimbalaka to Jimbale reminded me of 'Rootula Jootula Azhaguveetula, lambadi paatula ...' Overall the composition is not unique. The charanam is slightly more imaginative than the banal pallavi. And, yes Srikanth, the pallavi also reminds one of Hawa Hawa.. song. Regarding the religious overtones mentioned by NOV, the type of singing in question is also commonly heard in flamenco music. I thought this chanting was an interesting mix to the song. Overall score for this song is 6.5/10
2. Thirakatha kaatukula: This song definitely is more creatively composed. Somebody had mentioned that you would either love Unni's rendition or hate it; i.e no in-betweens. I did not like it. It is hard for me to visualize our hero (Arvind Swamy) with a rather deep voice able to sync. well with Unni's high pitch. Quite frankly the start of the pallavi by Unni reminded me of the street vendors who used to frequent the street I used to live and shout at their highest possible pitches to catch the attention of people inside their homes even if they were sleeping.
OTOH chitra has done a good job. Mainly Neelambari in the Pallavi. But the interlude as usual has glimpses of Kalyani then occasional N2 and M1 which are favorite variations used by ARR frequently. To name a few examples 'malargale malargale..' in Love birds and Chandiranai in Ratchagan have similar progressions.
Interestingly the charanam starts brilliantly in Hamsadwani. I really loved this twist to the song and then merges beautifully to the pallavi in Neelambari. Overall score 7.5/10;(I would have given an 8, if not for Unni's rendition)
3. Niagra: Again falls into the category of dance/party/enjoy kind of song. Although the pallavi is nicely composed based primarily on Kalyani the chorus is not in kalyani and their combination side by side, feels awkward; something like having a tasty morkuzhambu with Pizza!! Overall score 5.5/10
4. Thuli thuli: Contrary to the popular opinion so far in this forum, I thought the pallavi was quite unexciting and as mentioned by somebody else the words of Chakaravagamo?? Same here! Never heard of it before! That kind of put me off on the pallavi.
Pallavi is mainly composed in Madhyamavathi. After hearing to great madhyamavathi's from MSV and Raja this stuff didn't exite me.
However the Charanam is again creatively handled. There are additional notes (which is very common from times immemorial) such as N3, G3 which show shades of Brindavana Saranga and Kapi. Overall score for this song is again 6.5/10
5. Theendai: My favorite song of the album. Again contrary to popular opinion, I think the voice before the song is quite sexy and an interesting addition. Otherwise the song is lacking in imagination and seems to revolve around the sangathis of 'Enthoro mahanu bhavulu'. Yes, as somebody mentioned before it is in Sriragam as is the song Enthoro by St. Thyagaraja. The interludes have a flavour of the kind of orchestration and harmonic pieces used by ARR in his Fantasy by S.Janaki (which was again a rendition of Enthoro as Andhimaalai..) Couple of other comments. There are some gamakas in the early part of charanam that remind one of AnandaBhairavi (again one of ARR's favorite ragas) but toward the later half of the charanam moves to more purer SriRaagam.
Very interesting the effect which ARR uses towards the end of the pallavi. A kind of drum piece which morphs in and out. Believe it or not, this was a sample piece available at Yamaha's Synth site, promoting one of their newer sampler-synthesizers, model EX7.
I was really surprised and also slightly disappointed to see this piece being almost cut and pasted. Also, I thought there was a timing defect (*Srikanth--Please Confirm*) towards the end of the song where this a particular cut and paste of this morphing piece it did not merge well with the ongoing percussion. Finally comment on SPB; Nice to have him back in tremendous form. Overall score 7.5/10. I would have given more marks had I not noticed the cut and paste and timing issues. (I hope the timing issue is really a net congestion delay effect rather than a real timing defect)
6. En Swasa Kaatre: Good, clean song; tight composition with typical ARR interludes. Based primarily in Sankarabharanam. Veena interludes are fabulous. Good job Balachander. Again ARR has been inspired from a song in Dire Straits--to be more precise the way MGS's voice breaks when he sings En-Swasa-Kaatre and the line Naan paadum paatai at the low pitches are very typical of Mark knopflers rendition in the song 'Your latest Trick'. Overall score is 7/10
Overall album score 6.75/10; good effort by ARR and the album is definitely worth owning.
Comments welcome

Hi Geetha
After I wrote my review, I looked at your initial reivew of ESK. Amazed to see the similarity!!
Anyway--Veena interludes are by parthasarathy and not balachander (Shame on me for not having the names straight)
Thanks
