the star songs are quite good , especially the fist three ones. spb as usual comes out with flying colours and i hope that arr makes use ofhim more often than not.arr, spb combination is the greatest thing tohappen next to illayaraja ,spb. its good that the stale ghazal and carnatic music singers didnt find a place in this album.

Udhaya: Any other comments from ARR when you met him? What you say is fascinating, I never realised that re-cycling happened in the old days too. What else did you question him on? Do tell us more.....
As for STAR:
It is the rights of the backing track that the director of S*T*A*R has bought and is using, hence, hand picked songs from Hindi movies. Do we care, NO, I heard them in Hindi, but they still have a difference in Tamil - the lyrics, as you rightly say.
Also, the choice of singers - no matter what their pronounciation, is different.... As for Sadhna, I personally love her voice and singing talent, I don't see a problem with her being used. I agree that there are many talented Tamilians, I do watch Sapthaswarangal, e.t.c, but it seems that it's the children that are excellent, whereas, the adults are not so great, hence using the best of breed form INDIA - why segregate? As for Shankar, he is a pukka Tamilian and speaks fluently. His accent may be a bit different, but then again, so was SPB's and KJJ's when they started.... A singer is taken on their ability, not their pronounciation, if they fit the song, they are rightly used. How many singers can sing like Shankar or Hariharan - hardly any - that is why they are at the top, they have voice, they have range and technically, they are fantastic - both clasically trained, e.t.c... If you see Shankar live, you will not complain about his singing.....
Personal Point of view: STAR is great, very listenable songs, awaiting the picturisation.
Fantastic review Udhaya, as usual. Many Thanks.

Angeil, you have said that the best of the lot should sing and no matter how they pronounce. while this line of argument is quite debatable, you have also said shankar and hariharan have range, voice and clasically trained. though they might be classaically trained, there voice become quite stale after a few hearigs. thier voice cannot be heard again and again . they may be good at singing carnatic and other ghazal songs, but singing films songs is quite different where voice is very very vital. so far as far as tamil music is concerned, only tms and presently spb have that kind of voice, range and modulation and you never feel bored of hearing them again and again. if your logic that only the best should sing applies, then i do not find any match for spb who should be singing the best of arr and illayaraja songs . also the longevity of the songs is quite ensured.

I only like Thom Karuvil and that only after some time. The rest are horrible. Especially Mchcha Machiniye

Angeil,
I wasn't sure if you got the gist of my post or not, so,let me make it clear before further misconceptions brew. My mentioning a conversation with ARR was a very tongue-in-cheek statement. I did not meet him or any other MD nor do I care to meet these folks in person. I was just being ironic from having read such accounts here in the DF, don't assume it's true please. Let's allow for some playfulness here, folks.
Balaji,
I haven't heard a badly pronounced song by Shankar Mahadevan to date in Thamizh, despite him getting some very tough songs to sing. If you point it out, I'll check it out and see for myself. I favor him based on his track record, not because I aim to appreciate everything he sings. If I find that he butchered a song, I have no problem accepting or acknowledging that truth. No one's exempt from criticism if they pronounce badly.
Hariharan has a vazha vazhaa Thamizh which grates on me most of the time but he has sung consistently well for Vidhyasagar, YSR and Deva for some strange reason and killed many ARR songs with his butter mouthed Thamizh (case in point: "suttum vizhich chudar", ayyoa seththaan Bharathi innoru tharam).
Before another misconception arises let me make it clear, I'm not here to wave the regionalistic flag. If someone is willing to render Thamizh accurately, I'm game to listen and appreciate. I can honestly say that SPB and P.Suseelaa have mastered Thamizh better than many native singers, so segregation is hardly the motive with me, please. I'll knock another sacred cow for you, Dr.Balamuralikrishna! Thamizhaa adhu avar vaayila?

Deepak,
Okay, I'm astounded that people read that as a credible quote. I don't want to put words in anybody's mouth. Hear! Hear! People! That was not for real. I will disclose my intent in more obvious ways in the future.

STAR is quite average. Mache is below average...Rasika, rasika - the repetition of the words is highly irritating. Pallavi is horrible. Aenappaa intha thollai?? sumaar song! THOM karuvil, engayyo kaetta maathiri irukku. Someone will certainly come up with the original. The other 2 songs are also not appealing. What else to say? NOTHING SPECIAL ABOUT THE ALBUM...

Listen to Hariharan sing 'vAnaththu thAragaiyo' in poonthOttam or 'oor urangum nEraththil' in kanna unai thEduigirEn. I think he has sung these songs very well. (Personally, though I dont like his singing, even though he has a good voice. I'll take SPB or KJY anyday or Unnikrishnan, UnnimEnon. anyday).

Udaya,
Even I thought that you had a real chat with ARR, and I took your words for real. You may want to avoid giving us such misconceptions in future.
Btw, I liked your review.. and agree with ur comments on SM. He has an excellent range and his diction is better than many other singers. Hes defnitely one of the best we have today.

Hi..Hi..Hi.. Nice Joke to laugh about! Try learn to accpet the facts! It's very unfair for anyone who likes GENUINE music, to say that STAR is GOOD!!

Saravanan,
It's very childish to think that your opinion is the world's truth.

So is your opinion

I never imagine that my opinion is the universal truth nor do I make statements with the phrase "anyone who likes Genuine music" because I'm adult enough to know that what's genuine to me is rarely what's genuine for someone else.
If you want to attack me, do it based on something I said, not for something I didn't, okay, you nameless wonder?

udhaya,
in future if u want to put something in a lighter vein, please include something called smiley-not only me,but, going thru the postings, everyone seems to have swallowed hook, line and sinker what you said about ARR and recycling.why blame me for''getting all hot and bothered''?
- From: Saravanan (@ 64.220.209.210)
on: Fri Jun 1 20:55:50 EDT 2001
Udahaya,
The point i want to make is that STAR doesn't have the quality music in it. It's my opinion and i haven't stressed upon anyone else. IT'S JUST MY OPINION. Either the songs should have some pep or to feel good about it. STAR makes neither of these. Unlike u, i know what's GENUINE music is. That's why i commented like that and i sincerely feel whatever i wrote is right. By any means, if it hurts ur feelings, i am sorry! By the way, what do u mean by world's truth??, Is that, whatever ARR makes, we need to say AAHHH... SUPERB????? VERY SORRY! I am not like that. Do u really like that rasiga rasiga rendering? Then u must be ARR fanatic!

Udhaya,
Please listen to 'Kalakalakkuthu Kalakalakkuthu' song from the movie Badri (available @ raaga.com) - there are two versions, one by Mano and the other by Shankar Mahadevan., You can clearly understand what shankar mahadevan is doing to tamil., Not only that he is pronouncing bad, But he simply tries to make tamil look funny with unnecessary izuppus and vettals - 'vaazhvin inpaththaith thulaiththu veeeeeeeeeetoom' is one another example.
Some songs he has sung well - examples 'Thaniyee' and 'Enna sollap pogiRaay', But for me, he still seems to be in learning phase.

xyz,Saravanan,
Perhaps you guys should talk amongst yourselves, you will understand each other very well. I'm not going to put smily icons to get my point across. I don't want to help further the DF's irony-deficiency. I'm not about to write down to your level by repeating irrelevant facts, littering my post with all caps, and getting mad at the world for not agreeing with me.
Three or four people here thought I was serious. I talked to many others in the DF including one of the TFMpage admins, and all of them thought I was kidding and didn't take my post literally. So, I can't be blamed for comprehension problems by a few. Besides, soon as I realized that one person read me wrong, I put a disclaimer and explained that I was kidding. So, relax, drink some ice water. Chill out. This is a fun Discussion Forum not a congressional hearing.
Saravanan,
When you make a statement like, "Unlike u, i know what's GENUINE music is." You're assuming your taste is better than mine. Your earlier statement was along the same lines. You make sweeping assumptions about other's taste compared to yours; this is the very thing I said was childish. Like what you want, man, nobody's stopping you. But ridiculing others for not sharing your views is definitely not an adult thing to do. You attacking my taste is no hair off of my back (I wish it were, it would save me some razor blades. Perhaps here would be a good place to insert some smileys, i.e. if I were in the habit of using them). Okay? I have already wasted enough time explaining things to you humorists. Enjoy music. Peace, love, harmony, and the whole enchilada to you and your beloved (no smileys here though, the last statement was said with a straight face swelling with earnest emotions).
Your loving pal,
Udhaya
