What's the greatest song that Ilayaraja has composed? I think it is "Kanmani, anbodu..." from "Guna". The thing I like about this song is that Ilayaraja has cleverly used a "happy" tune for a sad situation in the film. What do you guys think?

Right now, there is one IR song that I am hooked on. I realize that this is an eccentric selection as the song wasn't a superhit like so many of the other selected songs in this thread. Anyway, the song is 'Nadu Saamathile' in the film Thirumathi Pazhanisaami (a song which took a backseat to 'Paadha Kolusu' in matters of critical acclaim). It is a very melodious song, loosely based on raaga Sudhasaveri (It uses anya swaras Ga3 in the pallavi and Ga2 in the charanam, albeit scantily), sung by the wonder combo of SPB and SJ. If you would like, you can hear this song at:

I would go with "Paruvame Pudhiya paadal paadu" from Nenjathe Killadhe. What a magical song it is. The use of silence, the violin's, the Guitar, SPB and SJ's voice blended wonderfully to give you a out of the world song and that too without percussion. Particularly the starting of the song, wow! is there any other song that could match this. I wonder not for another half a million year!!!Great song. And the uravenum pudiya vaanil, Thalatudhe Vaanam from kadal meengal, Kanavil medhakkum from Eera vizhi kaaviyangal, Oru Vaanavil pole....i can go on and on forever.
Greatest Composition of Raja, Hmmmm. probably the most difficult question to answer. Lets continue the probe.

In the spirit of Purv, here is one that is quite popular but to me is a classic. I won't call it his greatest composition, but it is up there with his best:
Ramanin Mohanam from Mettrikkan. The use of the guitar in this song is an object lesson to composers. The prelude has a wonderful piece just before the song starts. The interludes maintain this level and the entire song drips with romanticism.

My favourites are:
"Kuzhaloothum kannanukku" from Mella thiranthathu kadhavu
"Sorgame Endraalum" from "Ooru vitu ooru vandhu"
"Ninnukori Varanam" from "Agni Natchathiram"
All three are simply amazing....pure magic!

True to its position as the first song in the list, this song "Roja Ondru Mutham Kaetkkum Neram" is the No. 1, which I think, is the greatest song ever, which IR has composed.
How many times, we hear, we are not bored.
This song is one of the few songs, which SJ sang for Sarikha.
SJ has done only a few songs for Sarikha, but all of them are good.
Apart from this song from "Komberi Mookan", SJ had sung
"Mookuthi Poo Maele Kaatru otkaandhu Pesudhammaa" (from "Mouna Geethangal")
"Maasamo Maargazhi Maasam Neramo Raathiri Neram" (Again from the same film)
and one another very melodious song is there where SJ had done for Sarikha.
It is
"Mazhayae Mazhayae Ilamai Muzhudhum Nanayum Varayil Vaa
Saaral Vizhum Neram; Deva Mayakkam
Koondhal Malarin Thaenai Edukka Kaathu Kidandhaen Kaalgal Kadukka; Idhayam Thudikka" (SPB & SJ)
This song, has Pratap Pothan and Sarikha, in the film.
But, I do not know the name of this film.
Music is by Shankar Ganesh.
When I heard the song first, I thought it to be by Illayaraja.
The song was that good, that I began to assume, that the music is definitely by Illayaraja and that he alone can give a song like this.
But, I was deceived, when I came to know that, the song was from Shankar Ganesh.

Here is one rare song from the film 'Avatharam'.
'Indiranum Sundararum Pettradutha Puthiranum Nandane'.
The song is a typical folk number, set at the background of a western classical symphony style. Beatiful blend of western and folk, and according to me, this should be the most complicated and innovative composition of Raja, which nobody would have ever attempted.
Even the rendering of the song by raja himself aptly suits nazir.
I would like to have a review of this song by any musical experts.

I guess in the Mazhaiye ..Mazhaiye song Chandrasekhar and Shanti Krishna..
Another song I thought to be IR's but composed by Shankar Ganesh is the amazing "Jeevamritham Devamritham Pennal" from Moondru Mugam.

"suriyanai kandavudan
thamarai yen malarndhadhu" is the best song IR ever composed from the film "Parvathi ennai paaradi" . Fantastic singing by Janaki, superb melody in the tune and classy interludes all these make this song fresh for ever

It's impossible to name one generally as Raaja's best. However, when it comes to "Aadal Paadal" fast happy songs, none can be better than "Ilamai Idho Idho" from Sagalakala Vallavan. The arrangement is mind-boggling. With all due respect to contemporary music dirs, this song puts their studio gimmicks to shame.

I must be frank, in 'Aruvadai Naal', I like much better the MV-SJ duet 'Mellaatha Mella Thottu.' So what if this isn't the number one 'hit' in the album??
BTW, today I for the first time heard 'Kaalai Nera Kaatre' and 'Thendral Kaatrum' from Bhagavathipuram Railway Gate, both songs set to Sudhadhanyasi raagam.
