I want this thread to be a decent IR Vs ARR debate. I want to make a list of songs that leave a very powerful emotional impact and compare the creations of IR and ARR. To begin with we can start with the emotion of sorrow / sadness. IR has a few really strong candidates starting from his very first movie. ARR has his powerful chakravaaham from Muthu.
Sondhamillai bandhamillai - Annakkili
Amma nee sumandha pillai - Annai oar aalayam
Thaayundu thandhai undu - Koyil Kaali
Vidukadhaiyaa - Muthu
One to be in one of their better frames of mind to be able to withstand the onslaught of these songs.
Let the healthy IR Vs ARR debate begin

x, "poongaatre" and "ullathil nalla ullam" share the same raagam. "Poongaatre" is definitely not even inspired , leave alone copy from "Ullathil".
There are countless songs from IR which bring one close to mother nature . My hand picked songs are
Malargalil aadum ilamai pudhumaiye (Kalyanaraman)
Solai kuyile kaalai kadhire
Poove pani poove - Nilavu suduvadhillai
Illamai ullam - replete with chirps of birds from Paadum paravaigal. I would say this song falls under a rare genre where it starts off as a pleasant song with sweet chipper and chirrups of birds which later turn into eerie shrieks.

If you count the bit songs and bgms then IR is uncomparable with arr. IR is far ahead from arr. kathaluku mariyathai, padikathavan, heyram, Nayagan, thalapathy, aboorva sagotharargal etc etc.. countless.

LOts of such good threads die becuse of some people with filthy languages which serve no purpose other than killing the spirit of the thread. They must be ashamed for this and the way they express their perversions. Do decency and decorum have no place to survive?

for sad AR Rahman songs, Velli Malare is my favorite. Its a very sorrowful song sung well by SPB and Mahalakshmi with equally involvuing interludes. The Hindi version is good as well with Sonu. The instrumental version surely gets me emotional.
here r some more sad sounding songs not listed above.
Yendhan Vaanil (Kadhal Virus)
Oh Vennila (Kadhal Desam)
Thendrale (Kadhal Desam)
Katru Kudhirayile (Kadhalan)
Azhage Suganma (Parthale Paravasam)
En Mel Vizhunda (May Madham)
but the Bombay Theme takes the cake i think.
For Ilayaraja,
Solli Solli (Senthamizh Pattu) is an absolute classic.
Vettaruva Thangi/Vaanam Thottu (Devar Magan) is another.
Anbana Thayai Vittu (Mahanadhi) There r 2 more in the movie also worth mentioning.
Kodyile Malligai Poo (Kadalora Kavidhaigal)
Koondukkulla (Chinna Gounder)
Chittukku Chella Chittukku (Nalavanukku Nallavan)
O Thendrale (Sandhana Katru)
Chinna CHinna Rosapoove (Poovizhi Vasalile)
and how can we forget Chinna ThayavaL (Thalapathi)? What a song. It has brilliant interludes. Thats my favorite of all time.

Guys,
Somebody said Poongaatre Nillu is inspired from Ullathil Nalla Ullam. But I feel Vidukadhaiyaa from Muthu has heavy inspiration from Ullathil Nalla Ullam in the Pallavi. If you notice you can go from one song to another in Pallavi.
Anybody think the same way I think?

Most of IRs tunes are naturally melody. But ARR makes a song to play slow to make it a melody. Correct it if I am wrong.
For eg. 'Ammavendrazhaikkatha', Povama Oorkolam', 'Engey Sellum Indha Paadhai', 'Metti Oli..' etc are quite fast at the same time melodious. But 'Vidukadhaya..', 'Narumugaye..'a song from Kadhal desam (forgot the lines) etc are just slow & beautiful numbers but cannot be taken as a typical melody.
IR follows a 70:30 ratio (where 70% are Emotional) whereas it is 30:70 for ARR)

Curses,
Apart from the Vellai Pookkal, i cant really say that Tamizha Thamizha is a great song. One song you left out is "Uyirum Neeye" From pavithra(I Guess!!) , the best song for me from ARR up to date. Thats a terrific song, one i often find ARR fans miss to add it as one of his greatest!.
We have to ask ARR, why he hasnt been able to deliver that kind of rocking song full of emotions. Hmmmm, to me as a tamilian, i want songs that are reflection of my culture and not global music as some of his fans say. Although i am not completely against that either. A few here and there would be fine.
