Cheithi..looks like you are having fun :) I was really curious about the rhythm of jakkamma..Thanks for sharing that information. Please ask the Maestro when can we expect something like kaliyoonjal or kochu kochu santhoshangal..Why do these malayalam albums get very imaginative percussion work unlike tamil ? (The rhythm changes between western drums and mridhangam for every line in one song). Also convey the fan following for jakkamma, kuthu kuthu (you are my friend musicologist :)) and another song like that in kAthal jAthi !!. Still there not so cool and not hip people, who still like to speak/sing in tamil without an anglicised accent, even in other parts of the world :) :) :)

Talking of Pulamaipithan, he is one lyricist who always comes up with excellent lyrics. But strangely enough, the TFM industry (and the govt.) has never appreciated his efforts. Is it because he prefers to keep a low-profile and is not media-savvy or PR-expert like Vairamuthu?
His 'Edhilum Ingu iruppAn avan yArO' is a classic and so are many of the songs he wrote for IR. I was expecting the National Award for that number. Like you said, I hope IR brings him more recognition by encouraging him to be more prolific in film music.

Raja,
the link for Kaliyoonjal is http://www.musicindiaonline.com/music/l/VV000A09
the link for Kochu Kochu Santhoshangal is http://www.musicindiaonline.com/music/l/VV000A0A
the quality of recording is poor unfortunately.
Kiru, this has been told repeatedly. Wasn't IR offered interesting subjects and freedom to experiment in Malayalam in movies such as Guru, Kaalapani, Yathramozhi, Kaliyoonjal, kochu kochu etc etc
I was very impressed with Yathramozhi and Kaliyoonjal for their story. Kaliyoonjal was a particularly disturbing movie.......Shalini did her role to near perfection.

Thanks for letting me know about the Malayalam movies of IR, Kiru. Could you list the 90s Malayalam movies of IR? Hoping to get them when I go to India. Thanks.

sorry, i feel the compulsion to continue.....
A story like kaliyoonjal is like a red flag waved in front of a Bull. The director then is like the Bull fighter who is willing to take the risk. IR, the Bull, comes charging.... and we as spectators feel ecstatic!!! and watch the show with intense rapture..
This bullfighting show is fine, but my only request is that IR should more and more try to wave his own red flag and charge rather than wait for a bullfighter to do it for him......... Just a Jest!

Thanks selva.
I had seen the "koda manjil" song few times in Asianet and was much admired by the tune.
But I thought MD was vidyasagar as he composes in IR style in malayalam. Now I know that its our MD.

I post in this forum very rarely lately .. But Kiru et al have peaked my interest by bringing in Kaliyoonjal and KKS. Infact I got lured into IR's mallu compositions only after listening to "Varna Vrindahavanam " in Kaliyoonjal.. Just one listening to this song and u'll be lost in a strange world wondering how one can come up with such a brilliant composition/orchestration and melody..the lines ".. Kaathodu kaathorum.. kanoodu " in the IR version will haunt you forever..there is a Chitra version as well which is even better - sweet and melodious..
I have lost myself many many a times listening to this haunting melody.
As for KKS, all the songs are wonderful. Especially " Koda Mannjin".. this song takes off right from the beginning with a beautiful chorus melody that just soothingly blends into the pallavi...and the voice - Chitra again.. ( Hmmm.. that's what makes me wonder why Sadhana Sargam for the Vana Ville song in Ramana which has a similar hum at the beginning..).
In the same album, the "Ghana Shyama" and "Shiva Karuda" songs have carnatic and western woven so well togther..and the songs are a real treat.
But anyway, if you have'nt listened to these, pls do so and u'll never forget to listen to it again.
I guess somebody said, SMK is the real treat ( Full meals ) as against the Appalam and Urugai that IR referred to sometime back in an interview..
In my view , he has always been serving full meals to the Mallu fans and somehow I feel we get the left over ..maybe if the tamil movie recording session is on the same day ..probably we would get IR to serve full meals here as well..
not sure what it is..and have been trying to figure this one out for a long time.. something makes IR produce neat songs in Mal.
For those who have'nt tried IR's mallu songs, pls add " YathraMozhi " and Kaalapani to your list as well..
Happy listening
MSK

One of the best works by IR in mallu is for Moonaam pakkam, a padmarajan movie. The film, a very poignant one, has perhaps the best theme music by IR. uNarumE gaanam was a great number from the movie.

Interesting.... I would rate Bhadran's 'Poomukhappadiyil ninneyum kaathu' and Balu Mahendra's 'Olangal' as IR's best works in Malayalam for their uninhibited freshness besides great guitar work (speaking of which, I always wonder that the guitar is the one instrument that seems to have fallen out of IRs favour these days). I'm listening to 'Kuliradunnu Maanathu (Olangal)' as I type, this is music that's decades ahead of its time
The reason I think that Malayalam movies have extracted that bit more from IR is the fact that they don't give a fait accompli like - oru duet, appuram oru dappanguthu/folk song, hero soga paattu,..- template situations that can tire the heck out of anyone even 50 films old. Sadly these occasions will get rarer with Malayalam aping the Tamil and Telugu industry with a vengeance, the days of directors like Bharathan and Padmarajan seem to have long gone save an odd flicker.
It's also my theory that Mal films please the aesthete in IR more than Tamil films, with a certain refined sensibility by way of directing, scripting, acting, art direction, etc. I feel with the fading away of Mahendran and Balu Mahendra, IR lost two very important aesthetes who worked within the commercial cinema format. Bala and Thangar Bachan seem to be some way towards filling this void, though their milieu could mostly be non-urban. If Vasanth had stuck with IR, I bet he would've gotten some remarkable scores out of him. I sense that SMK is a rural subject that has excited IR after a long gap (maybe after Kaadhal Saathi), if only he could only choose his films with some care...
