I am really disappointed that Best MD award is not given to IR for Bharathi. More than that 'Anu Malik's' name worries me. My general perception of Anu Malik makes me wonder whether he would have composed better than Bharathi's songs/BGM in Refugee.
While I can talk in detail about Bharathi songs/BGM, I should accept that I haven't listened to 'Refugee' songs or BGM.
So if there is someone who has listened to both, please enlighten us with your views on the music content ... (let us forget the personalities please). For the benefit of IR fans, pls let us know if we could listen to 'Refugee' songs somewhere in the net.
(I also have one more doubt whether Anu Malik also did the BGM for Refugee... This is because, if I am not wrong, last year whoever beat IR's HeyRam, had only composed the songs for the movie (again a Hindi movie) and not the BGM part.)
Thanks in advance...

Neels,

Is this true ? I was wondering How Anil Kapoor got the best actor award when our own Bharathy (I Mean Shayaji Shinday) is there, Now I got the reason, Thanks :-)

And precisely for the same reason, Radha wasn't short-listed for Mudhal Mariyathai (though Suhasini won it that year (deservedly so) for Sindhu Bhairavi).
There are very few ladies in Tamil cinema who are good actors, and hardly anyone who can dub for themselves... which is why even the mediocre Karismas and Raveenas are getting National awards. Mallu cinema has some good young performers like Manju Warrier and now Samyukta, who give hope.
That's the sad state TFs are in

Thanks for that point. That was news to me as well. It seems to be a valid condition...
If only such strict conditions were applied for original music composition & most importantly , weightage is given to BGM like Oscar Award...

Now I really dont want to start a fight here...but as a ARR fan, I was expecting the award for either alaipayuthey or kandukonden2. Please dont comparing these and Bharathy. Just expressing my feelings.
Even Refugee had the song 'jise tu na mila' which was ripped off from Dil Se's 'satrangi re'! Even then?
In a way I'm happy that our masters (IR and ARR) are not involved with in this awards as every award is under a cloud of suspicion!

Karthik S,
You are right, If IR is not there for Bharathy, I thought ARR will defenitely be there for 'Alaipayuthey'., (I don't intend to use the word 'Atleast' here, SaNdaikku varaatheenga), Remember he got the award for commercial 'Minsarak Kanavu', then wny hot for 'Alai Payuthey' ?
Regarding comparision bt. Bharathy and Alai Payuthey or KKKK, Do you think it is possible ? :-)

Fliflo, Kiru, Subbu, Neels, NAgaS, Analog....others,
How about writing a letter and sending it to tehelka, rediff protesting national award being given to AM for Music, when IR has come with great works like Hey RAM BGM and Bharathi.
What do you guys say?. I think it is the right time to kick off this controversy, if we dont do it now, it is going to die soon, and people will forget..

Definitely we need. Till this time I was just a passive listener but now I would like to jump in. What has Refugee has that Bharathi didn't. Lets protest against this immediately.
Thanks

Subbu, Maapillai,
Thanks for your response. I felt that some justice has to be done....Anu Malik does not deserve...I am DAMN sure this award is RIGGED.
We have to come up with a good writeup and send it to all Indian portals...

UV2, well that is not a bad idea. however, see the entire scenario now. the Jury decisions stink. the newspapers have enough to write already. Bharathi bagging 4 awards satisfying many..Ok by shouting, writing to people let's assume we have achieved our aim...Say bharathi has been reannounced to be winning an additional peanut for music.....Lost esteem is lost. it looks like they have remade the decision for some loud noises.
But, there are some questions concerning bharathi music remain cloak-and-dagger.
1. Although "bharathi" was facilitated with 4 awards, why the primefactors (as lauded by press)such as music and cinematography was overlooked?
2. What made them to choose "Refugee" over "Bharathi" for music award? How did they decide on this? Firstly, have they talked about "Bharathi" music at all.
3. Who imposes the limitations like a movie can not win more than "n" number of awards? I know "Last Emperor won 11 oscars and Gandhi 9".
4. How do they decide these awards...Just based on few votings and discussions??
What it appears for me from the basic blunders made is that the members of the Jury neither have any first hand informations nor do they have any careful watch before making these decisions. Individual back-ups seem to have played a crucial role. Ethical values appear to have lost. We can shout loud and cry out of pain..but my personal feeling is once lost is lost ever..Even if you win, now the honesty is gone ashtray..

Why doesn't the National Awards Committee doesn't release 4/5 nominees(like Oscar or Filmfare) atleast couple of months before they announce the awards?
Does anyone know if we had any Malayalam films last year which had very good music?

Fliflo,
I get your point...but you only talked about Nakeerar. I think we should atleast give it a shout, it might make great waves.
Well newspaper has not written anything about IR being ignored for this award, they are just saying that awards might be rigged. We are focussing on issues, like IR being ignoired, and his musical compositions stand WAY ABOVE the other ones released this year, and certainly above REFUGEE.
1) Personally I also felt Cinematography was excellent in Bharathi. Again, this was totally ignored by the jury.
2) Exactly, this is what I wanted to know...the reason behind the jury choosing Refugee. Now, if we(Press) comes with this issue, this will force jury to substantiate there decisions. After that it will easy for us to argue once we have their reasons.
As you said, ethical values are COMPLETELY LOST.
Well, Why don't we do this. Our aim is not only to win the award, it is also to make this process more transparent and better.

As you said if the committee releases the nominaions that would make it more transparent.
I am sure there should be some films in Malayalam with good music. Interestingly the guy who walked out of the jury is a Malayalee.

UVII / Fliflo and other friends :
On a different plane, why was Bharathi not considered for 'Best lyrics' ?
There were contributions from Bharathi and Pulamai piththan (Ethilum Ingu song). If you leave Ethilum Ingu out, atleast honouring Javed Akthar above Bharathi is a great insult to the spirit of Tamils.
Jury - il ethanai perukku Tamil theriyum ? Mahakavi-yai theriyum
?
(I am not sure whether dead persons are considered for awards; or may be I myself have insulted Bharathi here by demanding an award for the Mahakavi... ok Neruppunna Vaai sudAdhu... I just wanted to post my opinion)

Hi all,
Pradeep Kishen - the guy who walked out of the jury has said (in rediff interview) that Barathi was also rejected initally (just like Pukar, Daman) and was recalled later. If the jury rejects movies like Barathi without even considering its BGM, cinematography etc., it shows the ignorance of the jury ...
BTW, it also tells us why bhava got the national award :)
