Hi,
In here I wish to compare the technical skills of the MDS - more on ARR and IR What are reasons for ARR being called a technician. Eg: Recording - Raja has used one of the best studio in the country Prasad, which has a clavier recording console (there are only 10-15 of them in the world.) M.Jacksons records uses that. So gadgets wise all the MDS use the same gigs but why ARR's output is crystal clear, Shall we discuss.
(PS: Please do make this into a arr vs IR war)
Srikanth.

kiruba:
'ullAsam' has some touch of live performance
in the song 'vEEsum kAttrukku' if at all I
understand correctly what you're talking about.
Listen to the second interlude, the violin piece
is going from left to right. But when it is on a
particular side, it goes up and down in that
side then the side changes. You can sense the
direction where the violin note goes. On the
cassette cover, they had mentioned about
the kind of recording but don't remember it
now. In the CD, which I have now, doesn't say
anything about the recording. IMO, 'ullAsam' is
recorded pretty well but not upto ARRs standards.
It has some 'sss' sound and bothers me so much.
Hope KR will realize these flaws soon and
comes back with better recording.
better recording, it will

Srikanth,
I mentioned Pink Floyd because I just wanted to keep everything in perspective. (Dont want you to get carried away with ARRs stuff :-)) Actually, IR has tried something similar in NBW but then again our guys do not have equipment like people here do.
Did you see the credits for X-files ? Zakir Hussain/ L Shankar or L Subramaniam live in Calif. and most often you can see them do even commercials for RAV4, Infiniti tec.
Check out a CD by Ry Cooder and VM Bhatt. Man, when I listened to it at my dealer's place I felt I was there in person watching the live performance. Thats recording.
I still have to convince myself ARR's recording is musical.I am not a fan of synthesised percussion (even IR is doing it :-( ). Compared to the other stuff I listen to, this sounds 'still' to me. I listen to it just because the tamil thing still makes me buy these stuff.
But ARR has to watchout the new IR stuff is going to blow his socks his off. I am listening to 'en veettu jannal etti' from Raman Abdulla and I find it is really good.

Hi kiruba,
Our guys have all the equiments what is there in the US. Actaully S'pore is the meeca for the instruments.
We lack the technical side. We dont have much help on the technical side.
In India Most of them are self taught.
In here there are many schools which offer good sound! education.
The investment on learning is more here on learning than the hardware. In India the investments are only for buying the instruments.
Here musicians themselves own the instrument or studios have them. In India there are people who just invest on the instruments and it is available for Rent. So when renting such costly stuff, there is no time to explore on the gadget.
Whereus, here music being the international the manufactures themself provide information.
Finally,we just have the manual!, thats it.
I learnt all many things with the manual and some real time experiences.

Srikanth,
I think film institutes should be offering sound engineering courses. For eg. in the credits a Hari Prasad Chaurasia CD with DDD recording it lists the sounds engineer with a degree from Pune film institue. Sound engineering should be just acoustics+electronics. So I fail to understand why there is a lack of talent in this discipline. Maybe this boom in the software industry is depriving other fields of smart people.
Last time I was in the bookstore I saw 5 or 6 magazines devoted to recording etc. Maybe you should consider subscribing to it if you are not doing it already. Since you are really playing with technology it should benefit you immensely.
