Can somebody help me with a song starting with "Needhaana needhaana anbe needhaana" , a fairly old song ? (I am not referring to the similar one in "Unnai Thedi"). The first stanza ends with "thunai neeye anbe". It has a haunting (atleast in my opinion) tune, and I heard it some time back, but dont know which film. Sounded like SJ. I am trying to locate it, but not able to. Thanks.

Bala mentions Pithamagan is Illayaraja only..
What actually Pithamagan means..
is it the Character(karnan or any other) portrayed in Mahabharatam..
or
Appa pillai..

To Priyan,
The song is in the movie 'Thalaatu Paadava?' by Ilaiyaraja. Sung by Arunmozhi and S.Janaki. Its a Parthiban movie.

To Balaji Rao,
If I am not wrong the song is in 'Siraiyil Sila Raagangal' starring Murali. Sorry I don't have the song with me. You can try and request from some other sites. Good Luck!

Nane than
Pithaamagan is NOT "Pithaa and magan". It is an adoption of sanskrit word Pithaamaha (not pithaamahaa), means a fatherly person.
As you guessed the "title" pithamaha is given to the legendary Mahabharatha personality Bhishma, because he was alive for so many years without even marriying and giving counsel to the state, as a fatherly person and hence got the title.
- From: Kaumudi (@ 136.142.153.250)
on: Sat Nov 23 10:40:55 EST 2002
Kupps
Pithaamaha in sanskrit means a couple of things - paternal grandfather (cf. Bheeshma example that you gave), ancestors (great grandfathers and above) etc. I believe our creator (acc. to Hindu mythology), Brahma, is also called Pithaamaha.
So in the present context, IR can be considered a senior citizen (both in experience and age) in his field and a creator of some wonderful music, so the title Pithamaha is apt.

I sent the link abt Rakkamma to my friends and asked them to vote....a friend of mine(we have a everlasting feud about IR vs ARR) said that he is writing a program to make chaiya chiaya to win .....I said I(R) win if he cheats and make chaiya chiaya to win ...There is nothing fair about winning by cheating......

The BBC poll might be manipulated by some crazy ARR fan who thinks numbers determine who is better of whatever. In my opinion Vande Mataram is indeed a good composition that resuscitated the national pride. At the same time,my personal favourite is Rakkamma Kaiya thattu..which is a truly classical composition that makes a very interesting case study for what is termed as fusion music today.
By writing a program or whatever, Vande Mataram might win.But it doesnt make a difference. It is a honor to the fact that people all over the world are now exposed to the existence of the IR classic which like most other of his songs got only a regional coverage.
So I am happy that the song is now getting good publicity nation wide(rediff, times of india etc) and also some global coverage.
And IR fans..lets not degrade ourselves by voting multiple number of times. We dont need some geeks code to tell us which song is better.
